The Official World Cup 2010 thread

Postby Behshad » Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:51 pm

Although there's a huge amount of soccer haters here, I think the world cup 2010 deserves its own thread as it is the worlds largest sports event.

Looking forward to watch some of the best players in the world fighting for their nations pride and glory. My favorite team has been Brazil ever since I was 5. Im hoping that they win the cup this time around as its been a while since they won it the last time.
First game starts of between the host nation South Africa and Mexico.
Let the fun begin ! :)

*DISCLAIMER : IF YOU HATE SOCCER, IF YOU THINK SOCCER IS BORING, IF YOU WOULD RATHER WATCH PAINT DRY OR GRASS GROW THAN WATCH SOCCER, MIGHT AS WELL STAY OUT OF THIS THREAD AS IT CLEARLY WAS NOT CREATED FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT. 8)

I never got much into soccer... the sport itself I don't mind - it really is pretty fun to watch.
But I think unfortunately there is just less enthusiasm for it in America. :?

However, we have a World Cup contest thing at work, kind of like we did with the Final Four.
We all picked a random team out of a bowl... the holder of the winning team at the end gets the prize.

My team is the Netherlands. No idea if that's promising or not. :?:

Netherlands has never won the cup , but they have always been a solid team with many good players. They have won the Euro championship and they have the potentials to go all the way , so good luck ! :)

Its sad that Soccer never took of in US, but it sure grew a lot bigger after 1998 Word Cup in US. I think if they have another WC in US in the future, that will definately increase the interest even more. The US women team has always been one of the best in the world !

What's the fun in having a soccer thread without the hating retards? Better to have them in here, than those people that only watch soccer when it's a WC.

It's going to be awesome. I got tickets to a couple of matches. There are few things in this world that is as awesome as being in a stadium packed with 90 000 people. I hope that England get's their ass kicked and that France end up winning. They're usually pretty good when they don't have a lot of pressure on them.

My picks for the last five are:

- Brazil (Or Argentina if Maradona doesn't fuck it up)
- Spain
- Netherlands
- France
- Côte d'Ivoir (That would be awesome)

The only team I don't want to see anywhere near a play-off is Italy; the only good thing they've ever done is to piss off Zizou.

France got off to a poor start tonight. They looked tepid to say the least!

I dont really care too much about who wins the world cup but I would really like to see the USA beat England tomorrow. As an American living in the England , ive been getting crap from people just for the sake of people giving me crap. If USA win all of em are gonna hear from me Sunday!!!

That's one number you will never see in soccer....7. No way will you ever see 7 goals scored, you will never see 7 shots on goal or 7 saves; but what you actually might see is a couple Euros faking injuries 7 times. That crap is pretty ongoing in this "sport."

Pure garbage. Get it off my tv already. One game just concluded on ESPN, and the score was, get this, 0-0. Exciting shit I tell ya.

NO FUCKING WAY is this shit anything like hockey. In hockey you do have some scoring, tons of shots on goal, and even more collisions/hits. You have excitement, and action. In soccer you just wonder how you can get the grass to grow back after so many faking injury retards cleat it up. Good riddens already. One more thing....if there's a "sport" and I do use the term loosely, that the USA sucks in, then I want no part of it. Anything where the slimy Euros are better than the Yanks is pure garbage.

Moron, it's the world's most popular sport for these simple reasons.

1- They can't afford hockey equipment
2- They don't have ice
3- They can't skate
4- They are too soft to play football
5- They cannot understand Baseball
6- They can't afford basketball courts
7- All they need is a coconut and a two pairs of trees. again, how fucking exciting. They sure as fuck don't need soccer nets, because nothing ever goes through there except wind. Biggest scam ever in the history of capitalization- soccer nets.

There's your number 7 for the "sport" of soccer.

Dickbreath,, no matter HOW you look at it, it is and WILL be the most popular sport in the world. Too bad you were born in a country where they enjoy watching a man in tight clothes hit a ball with a wooden stick

If the yanks were SMART enough they wouldve AT LEAST came up with an ORIGINAL NAME that MATCHED the game,,,,,
in REAL FOOTBALL , you use your feet to kick the ball and play around, not run around fully geared so the turf dont hurt them and they get an owie

Read the disclaimer , cockmuncher,,,, you hate soccer, we get it,,, but for someone who hates soccer, you enjoy visiting this thread, so are you coming out of the closet !?

Obviously some of you are incapable of reading. Beshad started this thread by stating that we all know some of you just don't get football and that if that is the case there is no reason for you to be in here.

Football (sorry, soccer) is played, watched and supported by more people worldwide than any other sport - by several orders of magnitude. There is no way that would be true if it was as boring as you suggest. Just because you don't understand the subtleties or appreciate the skill involved at the top level doesn't mean those qualities aren't there or aren't appreciated by those who do follow the sport.

I don't 'get' basketball, where points are scored every ten seconds or so - where's the excitement in that, where it's a bigger deal if you miss a shot than if you score points? I don't 'get' American Football, where you stop for an ad breat every five minutes and the ball is never in play for more than 10 seconds at a time. However, with millions of avid supporters I appreciate that there must be more to those sports than I can see at a casual viewing.

This World Cup is hugely significant for all sorts of reasons worldwide, beyond the sport itself. It is probably the most significant event in South Africa (and possibly in the whole continent) since Nelson Mandela was released, and will have a far reaching and long term impact of all the people in that country.

On the football front, it promises to be one of the most open and exciting competitions in World Cup history. Don't read anything into the opening few matches, as they are nearly always close, cagey matches. The real excitement starts as we approach the knockout stages.

I think the USA have a great chance of progressing from the group stages this time and fully expect them to do so, alongside England in their group. Then it becomes a pure knockout where any team is capable of beating any other team on any given day. One of the beauties of a game with few goals is that each goal becomes hugely important and it means that even the minnows have a chance of upsetting the odds and beating the big teams ocassionally. That unpredictability is part of the drama.

OMG!!! that has to be one of the funniest posts I have seen here in awhile. I am a football and hockey girl...baseball is kind of like watching paint dry...until the playoffs.

I have learned to like soccer...my son plays travel and well it's fun to watch..I actually enjoy it more than baseball.

but that post^^^^^^^^is priceless.

When I was growing up, everyone played soccer in Elementary school. It was the team sport that everyone could participate in, boys and girls both.
I think in Junior High is when the separation from soccer began as Football and Basketball became the extra curricular sports of choice.
By High School soccer was totally off the board.
It was usually the kids who were too hyper to sit still but didn't have enough coordination to catch a football or the taller kids who weren't any good at shooting basketballs. And from what I remember, the star of the team was always one of the foreign exchange students from Sweden or France (We didn't have Latinos where I grew up at that time.)

Soccer has become much bigger here in the past 5 years. Football was always the sport of choice for must of the High School boys. Now it's a 50/50 split and my town that I live in now Soccer is actually bigger than Football.

In the town I went to HS in Football is still the leading sport.

Maybe that was the problem with USA soccer teams of the past - not realising that it takes MORE co-ordination to control a ball with your feet than it does to catch it.

Um, no dude, I mean Marty. Look, kids play football(the real football), basketball, baseball and hockey because it's fun, and exciting. Using your hands is a nice thing to be able to do. Sorry dude, soccer just blows baboon ass.

Well, I guess if the use of your hands is one of the main criteria for an exciting sport then tiddleywinks, darts and golf must be really rivetting for you.

Listen baboon

US will eventually catch on and I bet you within the next 10 years when the new generation of kids will be playing more soccer you will see a huge jump in numbers when it comes to fans and broadcasts. and iit will eventually become more popular than basketball. Who wants to watch a bunch of tall thugs score every 8 second.
And where is the excitement when a team that's down 80-44 can do a comeback the last 5 minutes of the game

I'm just glad soccer gets more attention in the world than ANY OTHER SPORT. and it's popular enough to get YOU to talk about it :).

I'm thinking , you love soccer but too shy to fess up. ;)
