Deano, thanks for the nice words about our state. I know they have warnings, but sometimes people especially from other states ignore them. I think most of the ones killed were from out of state. We know what Flash Flood means.....well except for those few "special toothless ones you described". LOL! Most people here are down to earth and kind.

When my aunt died, and we were following the hearse to the gravesite, it warmed my heart to see the folks on the side of the road pulled over when we passed. It was something that took my husband by suprise when he first came here. If you are not honored in life, at least when you die, folks stop and show respect to families who's loved ones have passed. I know some people from other states are irritated by this tradition.

I have been to Hope. Not a big place is it?

Sorry Cyndy again........  I will start a thread about ARK. and take it out of your nice thread about SF.

lora & i have amused ourselves & puzzled the tourists by NOT reacting to the bush man. we'll be having a conversation (to show that we're not deaf) as we're walking by that area. when the bush leaps out & yells at us, we don't flinch or look at him or pause the conversation. the crowd of tourists don't know what to think & it leaves this weird tension in the air. we walk around him as if he's just a bush.

Fifteen years or so ago that bush man was a fat ass. Now he's pretty thin, wondering why. Maybe he's just getting old. SFPD has been trying to get him out of there for years, I wish they would. I was just in that area a few months ago and it's amazing how many people loiter around that guy for the sheer entertainment of watching people jump as the idiot jerks the branches at them as they approach him. If he makes a person flinch, he then tells them that they need to put a buck or two in his money can. I've even seen him get up and start following people with the can who flinched but didn't pay him.

So what does it take to make you laugh??  Can anything? For unsuspecting tourists, it's fun. And waiting to laugh your ass off at the next fool is not "loitering". Its waiting to laugh your ass off. Im sure it can get old to someone who lives there. He never asked us to pay him a dime. His cup is there and people put money in if they want. We do this at Six Flags' Frightfest every year - pull over and park on a bench watching the "vampires" and "zombies" sneak up and scare people. I'd say 6 or 7 out of about every 10 people absolutely lose their minds, take off running, act like Dracula really IS after them. This year, I plan to take video.

Yes. Come on Coug, it's a little town where a big historical figure came from. It's cool to be in a spot where the 42nd President of the United States grew up. As you know, I am a big fan of Bubbas. I'll put him up against any president anytime. Money, more money, no wars, and blowjobs. The guy is just a red blooded American with brains. That's what I don't get. You have Arkansas ok, with their collective 50 IQ score averages, and then you have perhaps the brightest guy to ever run the free world come out of this little town called Hope, and you say, how the fuck did this happen?

Well, yeah, Clinton and the Watermelon Festival ...two of the greatest shows on earth!!
My best friend, here in LA., was born in Hope. She didn't live there for very long, but still has family
there. When I go w/her to visit, I just thank god I'm a city girl!! The peace is great for a day or two,
the good ol' southern cooking is to die for, the people are incredible ...but yeah, Clinton must have
done a lot of reading ... and probably sex!!

The aquarium from that movie is in Monterey Bay, and the Golden Gate Park scenes were apparently filmed in LA. So there's not much to see from the movie but the bridge and downtown.

He could've been having a bad day when I saw him that time doing that. So remind me again what's so funny and exciting about watching a homeless bum scaring people with torn off tree branches?

tammy, you're probably thinking of the bay bridge. the eastern span is definitely diving into the drink during the next big one.

They're retro'ing the Eastern span so it should be ok when they are done with it.

BTW, bums don't make me laugh.

Like the time I was on my way to school at SFSU and I was walking behind two very "well to do" older women. Some guy on a skateboard goes by weaving in and out of traffic with a bag a shit on his back, it was obvious he was homeless since his clothes were all fucked up and he was thilthy. The one lady turns to the other after they both watched him go by and says "that's what I love about San Francisco so much....where else could you go to see that type of thing." So I'm thinking, the guy is obviously homeless and has all of his life possessions in a large Hefty bag on his back and these two bitches are happy to see that? They wouldn't be happy if that were them carrying all their possessions on the backs in Hefty bags.

Trust me, old ladies aren't fascinated with skateboarding. I used to skateboard and they would always be screaming that I'm going to hurt myself or someone else as I went by.

Perhaps she was referring to the skatebording, did you ask?!?
My little neighbor boy is a skateboarder and I love to watch him ...
I've seen him on that board w/a backpack, too!!

Would you buy a dog turd if someone spray painted it gold?
Basil Fawlty?!?! And the answer is no, I like
things/people to appear as real as possible!!

My old boyfriend's 70 year old auntie will disagree with you there; she was a surfer girl in the 60s, started skateboarding in the 70s and still loves it. Her kids are all into it, and now she's teaching her grandkids. You'd be surprised the stuff 'oldies' get into - don't forget, everyone was young once, and those wild crazy girls into rock and roll, fast cars and hot nights are going to be old ladies one day. Hell, you wouldn't BELIEVE some of the wild sex the women of my grandmother's age who went through the blitz were having in their youth. Some of them are still at it and loving every minute of it. I plan to live to past 100, and if I do, you better believe I'll still be dancing like a maniac to loud rocking music, with an active and wild sex life and enjoying every minute of it. Why plan to live any other way? Age just slows you down a bit; if you're boring at 90, chances are you were boring at 19.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

Yeah I'm sure there are a few exceptions, like there are to every rule.

I was just getting off work in downtown SF when the ‘quake of ’89 hit. Hubby had already picked up our 1st born from daycare and safely at home in Mill Valley. Quite an experience and sight driving through the Marina to get onto the GG Bridge…saw quite a few houses(mansions) burning  …thank God the GG was intact and Marin Co. pretty much went unharmed (only shakes as I was told when I got home).

The same couldn’t be said for the Bay Bridge, which collapsed, trapping motor vehicles and commuters in mangled steel. Days/months afterward… :( the shock of untold lives lost and billions of dollars in property destruction, mainly concentrated in the East Bay on south, hung like a black cloud over the community’s heads.

And…this moment happened just as the Giants/A’s were about to start Game 3 of their 1st ever cross-town World Series. In fact, all day at work, that’s all I could think about – hurry home to watch the game on TV. Holy moly…once in a lifetime emotional experience. Of course, the catastrophe of the earthquake would trump any sporting event. The A’s went on to win 2 more games (after a week’s postponement) and swept the WS, 4 games to 0 (which nobody cared about anymore).

Oh…never heard of “Bush-man.” Moved away in ’91; he must have came on the scene afterwards

This is starting to sound like it did all the way in Africa (where I was when it hit). By the time the news got there, the entire bridge was down and the entire San Francisco was on fire. Reality - only a small portion of an upper section of the bridge fell down to the lower section. When that section fell, only one person died as a result.

We saw some horrific scenes in the news. Many cars were trapped. Okay, you're right, maybe only a section of the Bay Bridge collapsed. I was thinking of the East Bay freeways...lots of destruction there. It took years to rebuilt ramps and off-ramps. I know, my father lives in the East Bay (Alameda). Traffic was terrible.

Yes, the Cypress Freeway was the mashed piece of roadway:

As for the Bay Bridge, no mangled steel, just one section on the upper deck fell down onto the lower deck on one end:
