Journey & Perry...

Comments from Bob Lefsetz -

I just got off the phone with Irving Azoff. Despite the raging success of "Glee", he decided to keep Journey off the road this summer. You can't overwork your acts, you can't go out every year. Or, you can ask yourself the question, do you want to burn it out or go for longevity? Remember grade school, where you learned about farmers letting their land go fallow? Same deal in rock and roll. Work the same venues every year with the same crop and you end up in trouble. Only in this case, it's not the land that dries up, but your audience.

When "Any Way You Want It" was first a hit it was easily dismissed by the cognoscenti, put down as a lightweight romp. But compared to today's pop confections, "Any Way You Want It' looks like Beethoven.

As for "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'"... Isn't that what we all want?

"Glee" is not a band, but a TV show. Which builds, fades and is done. Hell, just look at "American Idol". There's no such thing as too much music in the marketplace, especially when none of it gets radio airplay. Yes, these "Glee" albums are made for home play. On your iPod, in your car. Listening makes you feel exuberant...and there's nothing wrong with that!

And there's a hard core Journey fan base that's never stopped believin'. They've been waiting for the reunion show. If Dave can get back with Van Halen, if Felix could play with the Rascals, Steve Perry and Neal Schon can make up and go on the road. To play stadiums. It could happen. Steve called me a couple of months back and sounded as upbeat and thrilled about his music as ever.

Furthermore, this proves that if you've done great work that made it once, you're only one step away from a renaissance. But you can't push it, it's got to happen by accident, serendipitously. A royalty check should be sent to David Chase for each and every song downloaded. And make no mistake, "Glee" sales drive Journey sales. And if Chase could put their music in the greatest TV series ever, who are we to pooh-pooh it!

I think he was "as upbeat and thrilled about his music as ever" from the past ... and he should be. It's an incredible body of work that the guys made while he was in the band. I'm quite sure Perry is behind the scenes working to keep the songs he helped make famous relevant.

A Perry comeback with Journey could be as big as the Police reunion tour.

Well, maybe not that big - but at least it would crack the top 20 grossing tours list!

No doubt a "Re-Union" tour would be HUGE! Too bad the boys didn't figure out the one year on, one year off rotation BEFORE Perry got toasted!

Have to agree with Dan. He's talking about the old stuff and what a resurgence it's made on the iRobot Show.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

My first thought was 'who the hell is Bob Lefsetz?' - pardon my ignorance.

A little research shows that he is a legit 'who's who' in the music business. Regardless if his comments are high hopes or not, it's still promising to see that Perry's potential new efforts are getting attention of those in the music business.

regarding too much touring...

As Everett said the other day "Too bad Styx doesn't do the same thing". They keep going to the same sheds and playing the same stuff. That will bite them in the end.

Journey was smart to take some time off.

I read it as being excited and thrilled about his music...meaning music that he is creating. That's why I said "POTENTIAL new efforts". My bad for not thinking on the same line as you.

"as thrilled and upbeat about his music as ever." He's always upbeat and throwing out remarks about working on new music in interviews or speaking nostalgically about music he made with Journey. Nothing new. It's been said he was working on music now for a year and a half, even by himself before. That million dollar question still is will it ever see the light of day. Nothing in that post answered that question. Just sayin . . . . . .. .

Well, if this is 1995 all over again, then the stage is certainly being set - Perry needs to do Journey again.
Like I said in another thread about Journey's next album, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if we never see it. That, or it'll at least get shelved for awhile. Maybe it'll just be re-tooled with Perry at the helm. If so, AP could just turn into a song credit...kinda like Fleischman did.

Oh, and while they're at it - BRING BACK ROLIE!

How about this for a Journey lineup:

Two Lead Singers: Steve Perry and Arnel Pineda
Two Keyboardists: Gregg Rolie and Jon Cain
Two Drummers: Steve Smith and Deen Castranova
Two Bassists: Ross Valory and Randy Jackson
One Guitarist: Neal Schon

You wouldn't have to worry about not having strong vocals!

No

And there's a hard core Journey fan base that's never stopped believin'.

That's because the band has made a new name for itself,
I don't think anyone believes Perry is getting on the phone again,
He has not sang anything in 12 years.

They've been waiting for the reunion show.

For sure but every interview Perry say's he is not interested,

If Dave can get back with Van Halen, if Felix could play with the Rascals, Steve Perry and Neal Schon can make up and go on the road. To play stadiums.

This sounds like a money issue. I would be happy to see them just say hello to each other, Than we can worry about Stadiums.

It could happen.

And I can win the lottery also that could happen to.

Steve called me a couple of months back and sounded as upbeat and thrilled about his music as ever.

What exactly does that mean? He sounded upbeat because Don't Stop is making him huge money and he does not have to do anything.

Journey cant get back together with Steve!
Its one of the 2 pacts I made before I died,

a Journey Concert with Steve and the Viking winning the SB,
(with Brett back this is a possibility too).

I better buy one of those Wal Mart Coffins,

Proven in full this week on Billboard.
Journey's Greatest Hits was the greatest gainer on the album chart, jumping 48 places from #104 to #56 this week. Nothing to do with Journey touring or their current vocalist's back story. Absolutely something to do with the number #1 album this week, Glee: The music, Journey To Regionals.
