Is it Band Members...or, the Band Name...?

Postby TRAGChick » Thu Jun 24, 2010 8:45 am

Which has more weight and meaning to Fans?

Hey all... 8)

Mark and I went to Mohegan Sun on Friday night to see a Triple-Bill of Kansas (didn't see them; got there too late for the 7PM START(!) :x), Foreigner, and Styx.

Styx was excellent.....have to comment, tho, on the SHIFT in the Band.....no Dennis DeYoung at the helm; new Lead Singer.....who IS NOT the main "mouthpiece", if you will, of the Band - HOW DARE THEY!!  That honor was shared between Tommy & JY.

Superb show.

HOWEVER......

"Foreigner".....  :x

Yeah; I put it in quotes....I saw the Original Lineup in 85 at the Hartford Civic Center; "Foreigner 4" Tour....Lou Gramm & the rest of the Originals BLEW ME AWAY!!!!

Um....what I saw on Saturday..... :? :?

Mick Jones was the ONLY ORIGINAL guy - it looked like him and a bunch of Roadie-Techs. So disappointed.
Kelly, their new Lead Singer, ACTUALLY YELLED into the Mic: "C'mon, Mohegan - WHY ARE YOU SO QUIET??!!"

NOBODY was on their feet, or screaming, or carrying on.....it was SO embarrassing.

Thoughts? I don't know. It's all individual and subjective. Many don't like Styx without Dennis and many love Styx with Gowan and glad they're still touring. As far as Foreigner, a lot of people love them with the new lead singer, Kelly, and I'm sure many moved on. I'm not a Foreigner fan, per se, except casual, so can't comment on Foreigner. I haven't seen them live with him. I still love Styx live, with and without Dennis.

Styx are the only reason you should attend the show plain and simple, foreigner is a cover band.

Kelly Hansen sings better than 90% of the singers today....but in fans' eyes he isn't Lou Gramm...its funny. Fans don't care that a 5 foot nothing fronts journey, but a Hansen fronted Foreigner...all bets are off.

It just depends on the band, Sammy was great w/VanHagar!!
I still love Journey to listen to/watch Neal shred ...I have not seen
this Foreigner line~up live, but would love to before I judge!! Also
have not witnessed Styx w/out Dennis ...it's all just so sad to me ...I
want to cry ... I know for sure that once Paul and Gene are done
w/Kiss I am too ...bye bye Hard Luck Woman, forever!!!

I had a friend there as well who is in a band from this time and place...I heard that Kansas was the hi-light of the show.

I am not one to love a band with the "new" members.

VanHagar....LOVE it.

AC/DC...it worked

Skid Row is now CRAP

Journey...I don't need to go there.

IDK about the rest...I am a girl who like the originals....especially for the lead singer role.

I will be seeing these 3 acts for free in Omaha, Nebraska on Friday, July 2nd. I like both Styx and Foreigner, but have zero use for Kansas. I'll give them a shot, though.

I am not well versed in Kansas at all....but I was told out of the three they put on the best show....the sound
was stellar from what I was told...and this is from a person who knows about the sound of these bands.

You missed Kansas??

:D They actually put on a good live show these days. Was rough for a while.

I cant bear to hear Styx with Gowan. He plays good keys but cant stand his voice.
Also foreigner, wow, no way.

Lou Gramm rocked with them in 2001 and still does today.

pretty much done with Journey as well. (accept I still love Neals guitar and damn that Deen can sing)

Yup! They were the ONLY BAND we wanted to see! This totally backs up my theory of TRAVELING ACROSS THE FREAKIN STATE to see a Concert! :x :x

Yeah; we've seen them a few times over the last few years.....they put on a great Show! 8)

Well, Tommy Shaw ALSO sang Lead on a lot of stuff - forgot about that! He STILL sounds good.

I think the difference with Styx is there wasn't 1 lead singer dominating in their hit catalog of songs, as were with Journey and Foreigner. Say what you will about other members’ talents and contributions, it is the vocals that people hear first coming from the radio/record. Add some catchy music, and you’ve got a hit song. And when you’ve got 2 dynamic vocalists like SP and LG putting their marks on some unforgettable tunes, it’s hard accepting anybody but them singing.

Of course, we know Steve and Lou (at their current ages) can’t sing those songs like they once did anymore, but passion for something(someone) is a hard thing to turn on/off.

Anyone who knocks Kansas needs their head examined. Musically, they can't be touched. Vocally, Walsh WAS the voice of the 70s. He lost his voice in the late 80s to mid 90s...then kind of found some semblance of a decent voice again....Kansas IS Walsh, Ehart, Livgren, and Steinhardt...I know Elefante is adored by some here, but his two albums with Kansas were shit....I LOVE Kansas. And I know at least one other fan here: conversationpc....Kansas was bigger than Foreigner AND Styx in the 70s.

That being said...I don't know if I would see them today...I may. Not sure.

The side projects are an acquired taste: Native Window, and Proto-Kaw.

To the casual fan, which is what mostly goes to these 80 bands' concerts, Dennis was the singer of Styx b/c most of the big hits were by him and he was the identifiable voice of Styx.

Just my preference, but if you're going to replace don't get a soundalike, make it new and fresh. Like Van Halen did with Hagar. I like Foreigner with Kelly, he's not a sound alike and brings enough uniqueness as a frontman. Where as I'm not as impressed with Journey's and Boston's decisions of looking for soundalikes from home depot and youtube. IMO, Michael Sweet was doing a great job on his own, before they brought the other guy in too. IMO, Kelly, Michael and JSS brought/bring something new to the table.

I agree totally on Sweet he was doing VERY well on his own.

I am not a huge Foreigner fan....I loved them back in the day...but have not been a huge
fan like I was with Journey...but I agree it needs to be different enough to get rid of the

You act like you're surprised by both of these new line-ups... WTH??? :? They've both had these replacements for YEARS! Nobody can replace Lou Gramm. With that said though, Kelly is a MUCH better replacement for them than Arnel is for Journey. He sounds much closer to the original singer, and doesn't have an accent. I don't think they could have EVER found a better replacement. He's also an awesome frontman who does a great job with the crowd (without jumping around like a monkey)!

DDY... I agree with you here, but you knew this before you went didn't you? If so, you have yourself to blame. If not, you need to keep up with your bands a little better!

Kansas is a great band, and were awesome when I saw them live. If I recall correctly though, they got rid of their violinist. Lame...
