I know all about that. The IT department wanted to kill me when they found out their bandwidth problems were being caused by me downloading the Spanish language packs for Rosetta Stone.

ChildInTime wrote:Mother Father is pretty damn epic. When I first heard Escape, I didn't really like it too much. It's definitely a grower. The live version, though, is something I've almost always enjoyed listening to. It's such a symphonic sounding song without actually having or needing symphonic instrumentation.

Open Arms, on the other hand, is a bit too saccharine and melodramatic for me. Not really subtle at all in it's delivery, really, at least from a vocal standpoint. Faithfully pulls off the whole power ballad thing in a more mature and subtle way, I think.

OA came out before Faithfully. In retrospect, as love ballads go, Faithfully is a better song in every way. But, in 1981, OA was a gem of a song...went all the way to #2 of the Billboard charts....would have made it to #1 if not for Bette Davis' Eyes perching at the top spot at the same time. As it turned out, BDEs went on to be THE #1 song of the entire year.

Mother Father by Steve Perry takes my breath away. It will always be one of my favorites vocally by him. But, boy, does Deen do it justice. The combination of him on that song playing the drums is powerful live.

Deens good on it but he's missing a bit of bass. Patiently now, that's a different story. They could do a Infinity show and have Deen sing every thing, his voice fits that album perfectly.

That's why with the combo of the drums it works with him. His vocals are thinner, definitely, or maybe more muted is the better description, but the dynamic with him on drums while singing it live is powerful. To me, this song is epic, and one of their best. They all shine on it.

Nope.

Could ya give something about the song??? Oh forget it!!

Other than the fact that when I played it with Frontiers, Jim Gober used to call it "Mother Fucker" because it would clear a room out really quickly!  It's one of the best, haunting, emotionally driven songs they've ever written and to me is in their top 5 songs. How's that?

I'll never understand those people who can't take the ballads. You'd think after a while with all the head banging and ear splitting guitar solos, they'd want a little something different.
