I wouldn't call Hitler right about anything, BUT, religion should be held down in America and not allowed to influence legislation and certainly should hold no political power.

If people want to worship that's cool. When those worshipping people want to take over the world or force their view on everyone else, they should be destroyed.

Wow! There is really no sensible reply to this garbage, but Ill try. Christians are united states citizens and have a right to hold political power just like anyone else. We also have a right to express our views and opinions just like everyone else, including you two.
don't bother.
They're both idiots.

So do those of you who are against religion consider yourselves atheists? You obviously don't believe in God if you don't believe in religion. Religion (any religion) is man's attempt to be close to their God, whether it is a christian, jew, muslim... Religion is a HUMAN creation, though, and as such there will be mistakes (sometimes horrible mistakes) made in the name of God. Obviously there are fringe elements out there, but 'religion' in an of itself is a good thing. It is generally a very inclusive thing, designed to allow persons of a particular faith to come together in shared interest to worship and practice their faith.

Those of you who don't like to be stereotyped (BobbyinTN et al) because of your particular traits should avoid doing the same to others. You can't paint us all with the same brush. I'm sure there are 'religious' people out there who have been cruel and unaccepting of you. Not all christians are that way though. Accept it or not, our nation was created with a christian undertone. Our moving away from that is what has eroded our nation, not made it stronger. IMO.

The best part about it is that even though you shun God and the religions that worship Him, He never stops loving you.

Religion is man's colonization of set beliefs about God. Closer? Perhaps, but in their own way...and usually, it's their way or the highway.

Can we not have beliefs on our own? If not, how did religions start?

Just because some choose not to have membership in an organization, it doesn't mean they don't believe in God.

Freedom of religion can also mean freedom from religion, no?

I consider myself more of a anti theist than a atheist (slight difference). You people can have religion all you want. Pray to the Flying Pesto Jar for all I care. But religion and its values are highly immoral, and are based on age old myths and stories. I'd rather have full responsibility for my own actions, than having some old angry dude with a beard (cause he's angry alright. Just read the bible. Doesn't get more vindicative and hateful than him) take responsibility for what I do.

I don't blame God for what's happening around me, or my own actions and their outcome, I blame me. When something is wrong in my life - when I want something more; I don't go pray to whatever God I see fit. I make it happen. I'm the man in my life.

Well said Gael !

While I agree with you in regards to " be responsible for your actions", I still respect peoples beliefs and right to religion.

I'm not a religious person. However I believe in God.
I don't need God to give me wealth or chance to win the lottery. I believe in God as the creator of this universe. I also do pray to him when a friend or family is sick or going through a rough times. Knowing that my prayers will not always be answered , it's still comforting to have a creator to turn to when you or your loved ones hurt the most. Even if there may not be a God , the believing is what makes you dig deep and bring up that inner strength you didn't have to the surface.

I've said it many times before. There is nothing wrong with religion or religious people.
Therea nothing wrong with someone with a certain religion being a politician as well. But it's totally wrong and fucks up a nation when the guidelines and laws of the country are the same as religious ones.
Politics + religion = disaster !

My mom is a Buddhist. Rest of the family is mixed. But religion is not something we discuss; there's no point to it. Some God didn't create the universe or whatever. He didn't create nothing; he's not real from a scientific and realistic standpoint. That doesn't mean you can't have faith in something. I just don't see the point. There's no paradise, no after life. Us humans aren't special in any way. We're animals (albeit smarter than the rest on earth) - we live, we breed and we die. Simple as that.

Make most out of the life you have, not whatever "life" you think you'll get when you've passed away.

I tend to agree with this. I hope there is a God, but deep down, after living this life, I just don't see it. So if I go to hell, then I will. With my fence straddling thoughts, I agree that we're all here by nature. We're a microbial miracle. I think there are literally millions of attempts every minute at cells becoming one thing or another, and we just happened to get a great combination of mutations.

I do pray for people that need prayers, hoping it will be heard, but deep down, I think we're just like what Parfait said.

I disagree....I need to believe there is a higher place...not necessarily religion...but something to believe in.

I guess I need to have the idea that this it not it....maybe it is..but I truly hope it's not.

Parfait,
Science has not been able to prove that there is no God. It also hasn't proven that there IS a God. So it will remain mystery until proven.
More often than not you seem to try to feed everyone YOUR OPINIONS as scientific proven facts. ;)

Parfait , We ARE special compared to animals. Way above them.

Just all that science you keep bragging about , is possible because we are special. You don't see any other creatures having the skills that humans have and that is a FACT.
Human kind was created for a reason. Don't bring your mumbo jumbo that we come from the apes cause we discussed that before. You are fully entitled to have YOUR opinion , but you can not argue the fact that all that human beings have created the past couple thousand years proves that we are indeed a lot smarter than animals and way above them in almost every field, which means we ARE SPECIAL. :)

If this were on Facebook, I'd be hitting the "Like" button! I would hate to go through life thinking that when you die... you just die. :? You basically have two choices to believe in, as I see it...

1. A higher power created the heavens, the earth, and all living creatures that inhabit it.

2. The universe came from a big bang (which scientists say came from an explosion of matter the size of a period on this sentence), then the universe expanded for billions of years. Then all of a sudden... out of nowhere... POOF! Single celled organisms ( that learned how to make themselves apparently) happened to run into each other and were all like "hey baby... How you doing?".

Then they hooked up at her place and made more complex life that "EVOLVED  " into every living, breathing organism that exists today. :P

I'll stick to choice "A". What's the worse that can happen if I'm wrong? I end up with the non-believers as worm food? Okay, well what happens if the non-believers are wrong? That's pretty scary stuff. Eternity is a LONG time. Just saying!
