amazing and sad...

MGM Cancels James Bond 23
Posted 07.07.10 by Jim

According to Harry Knowles over at AintItCool.com, MGM has permanently canceled all development on the next James Bond movie as the studio continues to deal with its financial woes.

Can't say we didn't see this coming. Last April, we learned that production on the movie was delayed indefinitely, and with the recent studio troubles surrounding The Hobbit, this news isn't shocking so much as saddening. Fans looking forward to seeing what a Sam Mendes-directed (Road to Perdition), Peter Morgan-scripted (Frost/Nixon), Daniel Craig-acted 007 movie would look like, may never get the chance.

The silver lining, of course, is that James Bond movies are just too popular to die, so someone or some company will undoubtedly come to the rescue. But would MGM then continue to keep the franchise, or would they will sell it? If the latter holds true, a new studio may not keep the current creatives intact — which would be shocking and saddening.

Sorry, but that's one franchise that needs to "take a powder," so to speak.

I said the same about Star Trek, and then they released that kick-ass '09 reboot. I can't wait for the next one!

007 already did a tween-friendly reboot called Casino Royale. As long as they keep making 'em, I'll keep seeing 'em. Firing Brosnan was a bad move imo.

Agree about Brosnan. However, I really liked Casino Royale and the updated take on the character. Hope they get back in production soon...

Craig's a fine actor and can have the part as long as he wants it. But Bros easily had 2 still in him. As proven by Eastwood having punks stare down the barrel of a gun in Gran Torino, and Sly in Rambo 4, the age factor is overrated. Audiences don't care. A new Connery Bond would make serious bank even today - not that I'm seriously suggesting it.

Tragic....I thought that Casino Royale was to the James Bond franchise, what the last Star Trek movie was to that franchise....

I thought Craig really brought a lot to the role, but I don't see whey they could not have both kept on...I can remember Connery and Moore having Bond movies out at the same time...might happen again...Never Say Never!

Every time a new actor has assumed the Bond role, it's been more or less a "reboot." Note how the Connery, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and Craig films all differ from each other.

I think Quantum Of Solace is the reason the Bond franchise is being iced.

Not really. Craig's film was a literal day-one reboot, starting with 007 first earning his license to kill. All the other actors (Moore, Dalton, Brosnan etc) played the same character. They might have brought something different to the part, but that's what actors do.

The film was pretty weak.

He was allegedly in the running for Goldeneye in the early 90s.

It wasn't weak, it was fucking awful. No story line at all. Two hours of chase/smash/hit and then it just fucking ended. I was like,,,'where's the last 30 mins of the movie???"

I always liked Timothy Dalton as Bond. Less love, more violence is what I say.

Yes, I was blown away by Casino....and it was a total reboot with Craig being allowed to really explore the character and how he grew into who he is today...I mean, we even saw how he came about his favorite drink!

I could not wait for the followup...

and then...Quantum Of Solace...eeeeeee

No where near the quality of the Casino....a shame really...
