Midway ride mishap.......

Postby Deb » Sun Jul 18, 2010 6:19 am

Always one of my worst fears growing up going on rides alot (on any midway) was something coming loose or going wrong..........and it just happened at the Calgary Stampede (Worlds Greatest Rodeo and Outdoor Show On Earth) this friday. One of the arms of the Scorpion ride sheered off and sent cars flying. Injuring many, but thank gawd no one was killed. :(

Good lord, what the heck's going on there this year? And as far as the rodeo part of things - ten horses dead too, I hear? I used to defend the Stampede guys to death when all those animal rights nut-jobs came out of the woodwork (and believe me, I am an animal lover, just didn't agree with their methods), but I don't know - something's obviously not going right this year :( :?

It's all because of man-made global warming and George Bush... I looked it up!

My mistake - it's 6, not 10 (still too many) - and it's not clear in all cases. They same some from 'natural causes' (heart attack?) and some from injuries in a couple different events. Having worked down there a couple of summers many years ago, I used to find the whole rodeo thing very exciting - and the cowboys/helpers do love and take great care of the animals. But I can't even watch on TV anymore - especially the Chuckwagon races. Exciting? - I guess - but many drivers, outriders and horses have been killed over the years and it's just too much. Anyone who has never seen those races - go to Youtube.

I'd rather watch weiner dog races  - saw a clip of that on the morning news today - it's hilarious!

I hear ya, haven't been to the Chucks or Rodeo in years and years. Don't even watch the coverage on tv. If I go at all it's to buy tix for the home, 5th wheel, car, etc., see all the exhibits and maybe catch some free shows on the Coca-Cola stage.......had some good ones this year like Loverboy, Glass Tiger, and Martina McBride today, etc.

My favorite part of Stampede Week (in the last few years before I left) was playing hookie from work, going to all the breakfasts, drinking upside-down Margaritas at The Ranchmens, that kind of stuff - I don't think I've actually been down to the Stampede Grounds for more than 20 years

Speaking of Loverboy - they're playing close to here at a Nascar race August long weekend - think we'll be going to that!
