A Bit Of a Bright Spot: AP and his foundation

OK!! All the vocal arguments aside; the one thing AP does is his undying support for his charity.

I really like what he is doing. He doesn't want to save the world like Bono; I believe he sincerely just wants to help the children in the Philippines. I haven't been in favor of his solo concerts since they are not 100% charity oriented but he gets his APFI name out. Journey obviously supports many charities including Make A Wish where I believe Jon has been on the SF Board for many years.

Anyway, AP has really ratcheted things up this year for his charity and you just have to give the guy credit. He's now pulled in corporate sponsors and this guy just might make a difference. :D

My charitable contributions stay here in the US, we have enough problems, but I certainly applaud Arnel for his efforts.

I'm one that is looking forward to the 2011 Journey tour (I hope one show supports AFPI along with a US charity)

Since we need something to argue about. Journey will tour in 2011, which other bands will be out in 2011? Seems like a lot of heavy hitters are out his year, maybe a good call by Journey management. There's a lot of $10 tickets out there right now plus the no fee June to encourage attendance.. These guys might be smarter than we think.

No, I AM NOT A PINHEAD, but you got to call it as you see it.

I was just about to tell you to start your own thread.

I agree with you, my charity stays at home also.
I applaud Arnel for his efforts and the entire band. As those who have followed them from the beginning know, this band has been very pro-active over their entire history when it comes to reaching out to others, whether they be the sick, downtrodden, injured service members and what not.
Another strong point of the band is that they have never taken up with any political affiliations, either here or abroad.
Here's to hoping they always keep it about the music.

Well, If there's only one guy I'd want, his name would be Irving. Right now, he definitely owns the music scene. Since Journey is still on his roster and apparently one of his favorites It appears as big as he has become he still seems to be involved in Journey. Who'd have thunk it!

He's like Scrooge McDuck and his first dime. Journey may only be a dime compared to the rest of Azoff's stable but they're his dime.

CNN Hero 2010?

I think he deserves that for his humanitarian efforts. Only problem is last year's hero was from the Philippines.

You're right. That's why he is now ruling the concert/ticket world!! Actually maybe some good is coming out of it. by combining ticketaster and concerts we are now seeing things like no-fee June. Everyone deemed this to be a huge take-over, but it appears ticketing and concerts might actually work together. :? Who know's?

I'm sure the plokkers will be burning me in effigy after reading this (Which is fine) but NO. Look at the Indian cab driver or the kid from the Philippines last year. they do what they do Despite not having anything.
Being a hero requires sacrifice. How they were brought up or what ever trials they went through in the past is irrelevant to the present moment. What is Arnel sacrificing now for this to happen? What dream is he giving up to better these people in spite of his own personal loss in the bargain?
It's great that he is giving, in fact it's wonderful that he now has the means to do this BUT on the other hand, Bill Gates gives an awful lot too. I mean where do you draw the line with that. Arnel's not the singer of the Zoo, a struggling musician doing this, he's a singer in an international band who has all his expenses, including the travel for his family paid for when he's on tour.
I think to be considered a hero, in this sense of the word that CNN is looking at, you have to lose to give and that's the difference between what these guys are doing as compared to what Arnel, Gates, Buffet, and even others like Jon Cain are doing. If we change the criteria, then we can go ahead and call it the Bill and Melinda Gates award because it's going to be pretty hard to top their annual contributions to the entire world in the form of charity.
To give when you have something to give takes compassion.
To give when you have nothing to give takes courage.

I think Arnel would be the first one to agree with me, even those his admirers probably won't.

If he wins it, I congratulate him. If he doesn't, I think no less of his efforts.

I don't mean to eclipse the glorious light that emanates from Mr Azoff  but dude isn't really involved in Journey as you suggest. John Baruck is hands on Journey. Azoff spends his time with the Eagles.

Carry on

Remember the stories about the band getting blow jobs in the hallways and what not? I'm thinking this is not that type of fan base any more.
I think the only thing Arnel will get from these women might be a copy of the Watch Tower or a string of rosary beads.

Review (credit goes to Lou of APR)

http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/ent ... nel-Pineda

MANILA, Philippines

WATCHING Arnel Pineda in concert is like reliving the most exhilarating, rock ‘n’ roll moments of one’s youth.

Saturday night, a crowd of about 1,000 crammed Metro Bar on West Avenue, Quezon City, to see Pineda perform with members of his old band, now renamed Ammo, before he became the globetrotting front man of American rock band Journey.

Revelation

The gig was a benefit for his youth foundation. It was a wondrous revelation for first-timers, who never saw him at Shakey’s, or in any of the local and Hong Kong clubs where he earned a reputation as a singer who can cover the most difficult rock classics, and sound like the originals.

But Pineda is not like some copycat who, for instance, tries to sing like Freddie Mercury or Jon Bon Jovi just to prove he can do it. Rather, what we saw was a creative performer who took his audience with him on a roller-coaster ride from the 1960s to the 1990s, with a few originals, written by Ammo guitarist Monet Cajipe, in between.

Remarkably, when the band played “Help,” it was not the Beatles’ fast-paced version but that of Tina Turner’s ballad cover — Pineda’s raspy vocals filling every heart-wrenching high note with amazing lung power.

A medley of Pinoy Rock hits gained more significance with the way he put his own stamp, for example, by singing Sampaguita’s “Tao” on a higher key.

Euphoric vibe

When Cajipe cranked out the riffs to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” a euphoric vibe filled the venue, with a member of the audience unable to contain his joy as he screamed out the chorus while Pineda gave him the mic.

Like a god

After a spirited duet with guest Yeng Constantino on Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” Pineda was like a god who could do nothing wrong — breezing through the Eagles’ “Hotel California” and playing air guitar while romping along to a Queen medley that started with “Bohemian Rhapsody” and ended with “We Are the Champions.”

This diminutive rock star gets larger than life on the big stage. He should seriously consider bringing this show to the Araneta Coliseum.

He sounds great! For fan shot on YouTube especially. He also looks like he's enjoying himself. :D

He also sounds like he's been working on his accent and diction. Hotel California was really good.
