Survivor - Pittsburgh "Jam on Walnut" 24 July 2010

Postby Diffworlds » Sun Jul 25, 2010 10:32 pm

I went to see Survivor in Pittsburgh last night. It was a block party benefiting the cystic fibrosis foundation. Cheap beer you could drink in the street if you donated $2 to the foundation and a few food stands and several restaurants were open on the block. The concert itself was free. Opening act was Alexis Grace (from an American Idol season) who did a set with her singing and playing an acoustic guitar and another acoustic guitar player - mostly cover versions of other songs from what I could tell.

Survivor came out around 9:30pm and played:

Can't Give It Up
Burning Heart
Poor Man's Son
High On You
Summer Nights

At this point it started raining hard (had been raining a bit for the last 2 or 3 songs). The band announced they had to take a break due to the weather. After about 10-15 minute wait, the crew started breaking down the stage. I waited another 5 minutes and no official announcement, so I went ahead and took off. I am guessing the band did not come back out and announce anything or play an acoustic set. I had a two hour drive and was soaked, so I did not wait around any longer to see. The crowd was mostly 20 year olds with beer and a few of us older fans. There were a few sound problems during the show but nothing that horrible. It was a street fair, after all. Music and vocals were good other than the sound problems and they had not reached a point in the show to really talk to the audience (no, "Hey, we have a new CD coming out in ...").

I was disappointed the show ended early, but I got to see a free mini-set, take my wife out to a nice lunch and get out of the house without going to work (something I have not done in 3 weeks). Not a bad Saturday.

If anyone has a full set list of the summer tour, I would appreciate it if they could post it.

Thanks,
Mike

Wow. Not even a we'll try to come back weather permitting? Not even a thanks for coming out but we can't play anymore? I don't get this. Who is advising these guys?

Everyone knows I am a huge supporter of this band to a fault but it's becoming more difficult. I just don't understand. Why make a big announcement and then go silent? Why play a handful of shows? Having asked the questions it is FS band and he can do what the hell he wants. Maybe I would do the same.

If you log into their website now, it's still down but has a link to Pollstar if you want to see their tour schedule:

Also, the promoter of the show should have come out and apologized to the fans if the band couldn't come back out due to the weather. Not the band's responsibility, in my view.

Sorry they had to cut the set short.

Agree with everything said above. Nope not their responsibility but I have always like this band because they went "beyond the call of duty." So I set the bar a little higher for them.

That's too bad. There is only one reason why a member from the band, and/or their crew did not come back to the stage and say they were shutting it down: ego. Some of these nostalgia acts have it, and still think they are playing to 10-20K in an arena somewhere.

While they went above and beyond in the past.....it's fairly obvious that now they only do the bare minimum. 60 minute shows with a 15 minute sullivan indulgence......Slander I know You have been a beacon of hope about this band and always tried to look at the positives, but I think even you have to admit that priority #1 to survivor and specifically sullivan is no longer the fans but his own gratification. As big a fan as I was.....it saddens me to see him run this band into the ground like he has with "Broken Promises" about just about everything....from live dates or lack there of to albums that exsist or don't. I was told by not to be named source that when the latest round of litigation was inacted......sullivan made a phone call to this person and gleefully announced that 'He had them" and was excited about suing the organizers of the charity event for copyright infringement. Sorry but in my opinion based on the quality of material since and the quality of material before......Jim Peterik leaving survivor was a death knoll for the band. It's obvious to me that he was the creative "spark' if you will that drove the band while he was in it. I do not discount frankie sullivan's contributions to the material......but we can all agree that the material of late is somewhat suspect and in some cases down right terrible. What has changed from back then to now........Jim Peterik isn't in the band and doing the writing. What has stayed the same.......sullivan. One could say, and i agree, that Peterik writing with sullivan created the survivor hits.....one could also say that sullivan writing without Peterik created no hits and i would agree. But the kicker is that Peterik writing without sullivan has still created other hits outside of survivor. These are facts that can't be disputed. Bottomline is I feel bad for all the remaining fans who feel like they've been cheated a little, because truthfully.....they have.

We've all been through this before...talking about the past, what's *issed us off, this and that, and basically I can agree to some extent (most extents even!). However, I've mixed emotions because I've actually had a chat with FS recently over a personal matter, and I can tell you it was really a pleasant exchange about being a fan of Survivor's history, etc. He was really was quite generous, kind hearted and very sincere about what fans mean to him.

If you want more info. contact me on PM. And if you take my offer, I expect EVERYTHING to stay on PM I Hope that is CLEAR.

Not anyone specific. :) But that's how I'd prefer discussing it. Thanks.
