Hugo Freakin Valentine

I dont know if Ive said this before but I really love Hugo to death. And I dont mean his Journey covers but all his solo stuff. Walk Away an absolutely great tune. I couldnt even begin to list them all, my head is spinning from Hugo overload...and I like it.

I'm not a big fan and have always thought his voice was a little too thin for my taste. That being said, he has a good voice and his solo and Valentine stuff are a lot better than the Journey covers.

The Valster should be leading Journey as we speak.

Yep. Arnel has lots of power. Hugo may be able to sing higher, but his voice is too thin to sometimes even hear it. His Valentine and solo stuff is great though. Arnel or Jeremey would be the better picks to lead Journey.

I equate Hugo's voice to Castronovo's. Deen can hit those really high notes for songs like "Mother, Father" but he really gets buried in the mix because of the thinness of his voice.

I agree with conversationpc Arnel has a better voice, that said Hugo is amazing especially on his solo material. Disagree with Rick that Jeremey is a better pick over Hugo. Hugo blows Jeremey away having seen both of these performers live.

Jeremey sounds amazing, for the most part. My only critique of his voice is that it occasionally sounds like he is forcing it, trying a little too hard, or something like that. I certainly don't think we would've been disappointed had he gotten the Journey gig, though.

Dave you are right it seems like Jeremey is trying to hard. I have seen him perform numerous times and he does not do it. I am right he did not become the singer. I believe Hugo is amazing after seeing him everytime I go to the New York area.

For me, he tries to hard to be Perry. That creeps me out. He should be himself when he sings the Journey songs. I might not be as critical if that were the case.

Same applies to Jeremey, the guy really tries to be Perry on every song. I rather have Hugo like I said he blows Jeremey away hands down. Plus Hugo's new band is amazing.

Hugo can't touch Jeremey on Journey songs. Hugo's vocals are too thin, lacking power. He sounds better on his original music.

Hugo has weak vocals, period. It's an insult to Perry to even think about having that guy fronting Journey.

I wasn't a big fan of the Augeri fronted Journey either for this reason, but I never dissed him. Arnel has his issues with diction, but that dude has got PIPES.

Jeremy, I'm assuming that is the guy that fronts the Journey tribute band "Frontiers"? He has power, but...I think he tries a little too hard to get that, how should I say it....nasally Perry sound, like he's singing through his nose and at times it can start to sound like a duck that is quacking. No offense.

I made a trek to Ohio just to see him with Ehwmatt 2 and a half years ago. He hadn't done Journey in over a decade and I believe we saw one of his first shows back. That said, the dude had some rust, but it didn't take me long to figure out that with some practice the guy was pretty fucking special. Sucks that the place had a horrible soundman. :x You should hear Kelty sing Runaway by Bon Jovi. It wasn't even fucking fair, dude. 8)

Unfortunately, I don't think he likes being recorded or put on youtube because I couldn't find one clip when I searched a couple of months ago. And, sadly, I think he quit the cover band gig and went back to Christian music. However, I asked him point blank, "If you were offered the Journey gig would you take it?" and he responded "How do you say no to that?" 8)

love the solo material....generally dislike him on Journey. Good singer, if a thin voice...and a pretty good songwriter also.

btw, for what it's worth, it's Valenti....not Valentine, if you are talking about the man and not the band.

I'm with Scarab on this one. I've seen everyone mentioned in this thread live. Hugo is my favorite of the bunch because:

1. He can rock harder than Journey, or at least harder than they have since 83
2. His song writing capability as good as anyone's IMO, he's demonstrated this with 6? CD's
3. His voice has the range and emotion that sets himself apart from the pack
4. Every fucking note he sings is NOT vibrato :D

Hugo takes a lot of shite here due to his voice being "thin", he looks too much like Perry, blah blah. I seen him with Valentine in Long Island last year and they were awesome. His vocals were better than Arnel's before Journey went a half step down. I'm still trying to figure out how Journey can go half step down for a replacement. Is Schon tuning to drop D next? The songs loose their positive vibe a half step down ... but I digress.

I've seen them all and Hugo is the best and should be leading Journey today. I think Hugo would apply too much pressure to Friga and Schon which is the most likely reason he's not in Journey. He doesn't need Frig and Fro to write good music. Even Andrew agreed that the S/T Hugo CD was what that turd TBF should have been.

I like Hugo and have a bunch of his stuff. However, I just don't agree.
THAT would be pure imitation. He tries way too hard to be SP.
I know what you're going to say, and I just don't hear that from Arnie Boy.
Hugo doesn't seem to have nearly the power that SP and AB did/do either.

I can't stand watching his videos where he's trying to do all the Perry moves.
It just irks me for some reason. I guess, since it's a tribute, that that's how
it should be. Still, it tweaks me to watch them. Sorry Hugo, still like yer stuff,
but wish you'd walk away from the Perry stuff.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.
