Hugo Freakin Valentine

I'm with Scarab on this one. I've seen everyone mentioned in this thread live. Hugo is my favorite of the bunch because:

1. He can rock harder than Journey, or at least harder than they have since 83
2. His song writing capability as good as anyone's IMO, he's demonstrated this with 6? CD's
3. His voice has the range and emotion that sets himself apart from the pack
4. Every fucking note he sings is NOT vibrato

Hugo takes a lot of shite here due to his voice being "thin", he looks too much like Perry, blah blah. I seen him with Valentine in Long Island last year and they were awesome. His vocals were better than Arnel's before Journey went a half step down. I'm still trying to figure out how Journey can go half step down for a replacement. Is Schon tuning to drop D next? The songs loose their positive vibe a half step down ... but I digress.

I've seen them all and Hugo is the best and should be leading Journey today. I think Hugo would apply too much pressure to Friga and Schon which is the most likely reason he's not in Journey. He doesn't need Frig and Fro to write good music. Even Andrew agreed that the S/T Hugo CD was what that turd TBF should have been.

Only one problem. Neal can't stand Hugo, so has been and is zero possibility of him fronting Journey. Arnel emulates SP's sound on the classics because that's what the band pays him to do. Hugo is a Perry wanna be with nowhere near Perry's prowess.

Jeremey I have seen you play in Grand Rapids, Huntsville, & 2 times in Detroit (State Theatre & New York New York in Chesterfield Twp outside of Detroit) I missed the Magic Bag show in Ferndale when I was in Detroit. I will be in Detroit visiting the in laws this week and will miss you at Sterling Fest this Friday, instead I will be going to downtown Detroit to see Gregg Rolie.

I'm on record as NOT being an Arnel fan, and I'm still not, but when it comes to vocal power, Arnel mops the floor w/ Mr. Hugo.

That said, I have enjoyed some of Hugo's solo material...but come on. Over time I've seen him for what he is...he's an actor...I'm telling you, he could work the Vegas circuit with all the Cher and Madonna impersonators. Hire him to take flowers and candy to your girlfriend on her birthday and sing "Open Arms" in front of the whole office.

I made a trek to Ohio just to see him with Ehwmatt 2 and a half years ago. He hadn't done Journey in over a decade and I believe we saw one of his first shows back. That said, the dude had some rust, but it didn't take me long to figure out that with some practice the guy was pretty fucking special. Sucks that the place had a horrible soundman. You should hear Kelty sing Runaway by Bon Jovi. It wasn't even fucking fair, dude.

Dan...obviously you are more familiar with him and his stuff than I....if by any chance you know of any sound clips, or mp3s that I could check out, I would appreciate it...I heard a couple a few years ago...thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't think he likes being recorded or put on youtube because I couldn't find one clip when I searched a couple of months ago. And, sadly, I think he quit the cover band gig and went back to Christian music. However, I asked him point blank, "If you were offered the Journey gig would you take it?" and he responded "How do you say no to that?"

As for the times you mentioned, well, I won't make excuses but I've had one good show in MI, and that was Magic Bag...LOL...In fact, at The State Theatre gig, our entire band met for the first time about 5 hours before the gig. As far as your observations that Hugo mops the floor with me, and that I try too hard to be Steve Perry (versus Hugo?), I think that's a matter of taste that nothing is going to change, LOL! Since we're on the subject, and I've really stopped caring about commenting about my singing here or anywhere else, but I want to mention in passing that out of Arnel, Hugo, and Jason Kelty, I believe that I sound the LEAST like Steve Perry. I personally think there's other things to my vocal "apparatus" that draw comparisons to Perry, but if you listen to YouTubes of me, Perry, Hugo, or the recording of Kelty from 1996, I don't believe anyone would think I "sound" more like Perry than any of those dudes. I may have my head up my own ass, but that's just my .02...
