We arrived late and had to stumble in during previews. Packed house. We had to sit on the third row. Yup, me, my wife and 150 middle aged ladies that seemed to be enjoying the movie MUCH more than I. There might have been 2 or three other dudes in there, but I didn't dare look up from the floor as we left because I was afraid I'd see someone I knew. Not only that, I'm sure they had every bit of testoserone drained from them as well and probably looked like a 50 year old women at that point anyway.

It was the worst frickin' movie I have seen in years. Not just because it was a chick flick, but because it seemed forced and was pretty much all around lousy. Bad acting and zippo script. ZZzzzzz. Hell, I had to leave and pee TWICE during the show. Long and boring. I guess my bladder even knows a bad movie when it sees one. Julie Roberts from the 3rd row was not the least bit flattering. Her lips look weird...was that bad botox or natural?

I about ditched my wife on the way out the door and sat down in the Expendables just to see if my nads would return. Being our anniversary, I guess that'll have to wait for another day.
I am LMAO!! ...good story, nice gesture ...I'll wait for another review if you don't mind!!

I really liked it a LOT!! But I expect most men to absolutely HATE IT!! I'd never drag my husband to something like that. It wouldn't be fun anyway, because Id be feeling bad he was miserable  Somehow "woman in mid life crisis trying to find herself" does not translate to a man in any way

I will read the book now. I wish I had before.
Good to hear ...so what about Julia's lips?!?!

You know, her lips are weird, but maybe they always have been but as she's aging they are worse? Or she used to get injections and doesnt' now? It's not injections, because they aren't full or anything. I know what he's talking about though. She doesn't seem like she's into the whole enhancement thing so far, but who knows.

Stallone's mention of Eat Pray Love was facetious of course, LOL! The ghosts of Charles Bronson and John Wayne would be rolling over in their graves to see this thread hijacked into a discussion of chick flicks. BTW, Julia's immensely more talented brother Eric is great in THE EXPENDABLES. :)

Is he really her brother?? I had no idea! I've always liked him as an actor, and he seems to get more handsome with age too.

Haha! This gives me flashbacks to when my sister and I went and saw Last Song. Dumbest movie and stupidest storyline ever!!!!! There was a group of overly bleached, overly tanned, overly made up 40-somethings that thought they were more like 20 somethings sitting next to us. By the end of the movie they were crying-and I don't just mean tears streaming down the face, I mean right out loud uncontrolable sobs-and not little petite sniffling sobs, they were so loud we could hardly hear the movie! My sister and I were laughing so hard at them that we eventually had tears running down our faces from laughing hysterically. The louder they cried the harder we laughed. When they turned the lights on all five of the women had mascara running from their eyes all the way down their face to their chins....and a lot of mascara...and none of them knew it! It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. The movie was stupid but the entertainment was well worth the $ we spent!

Yeah, apparently over his drug use. Sounded like she took the side of an ex who left him over that and he didn't forgive her for a while. Also read he was slated to be on Dr. Drew's Celeb Rehab show for an addiction to medical marijuana. Hmm... He still kicks ass though! :)

Rip Rokken wrote:I saw THE EXPENDABLES last night, and it ROCKED!!! I checked RottenTomatoes.com and noticed it only got a 42% rating, but RAMBO never got higher than 36%. I absolutely loved both films and they exceeded expectations. Best I can gather is lots of people just don't get what makes them special, and I found the same to be the case with PUNISHER: WAR ZONE, probably the absolute biggest surprise I'd had in the movie theater in years. I'd heard nothing good about that film all the way back to early script reviews, so my expectations were extremely low. I couldn't have been more pleased -- Lexi Alexander hit the nail on the head with that one, and if people don't get it, they don't get it. It truly was a film for the fans. So are these two Stallone flicks. Neither is B-movie material by any means, but they are both sparse on plot and character development -- strange as it sounds, that's not always a bad thing and it hinges on what the film is trying to accomplish. Sometimes for films like these, those things need to be kept stripped down and simple or they risk becoming distractions.

Especially with THE EXPENDABLES, Stallone concentrates on the testosterone from all angles, and really lets every character in the film shine. It never takes itself too seriously, so there's nothing to do but lighten up, sit back and just eat up every scene. A lot of the coolness and laughs come from all the dick-measuring going on between these action legends, such as Bruce Willis vs. Stallone vs. Schwarzenegger, Lundgren vs. Jet Li, Steve Austin vs. Lundgren (and Stallone, and Randy Couture), and Jason Statham vs. anyone who gets in his way. Mickey Rourke was also excellent. Each of these guys is such an incredible bad-ass, and the kills are often so over the top, you can't help but love it. I think I just "got it", just like RAMBO, and came away thinking it was a perfect encapsulation of what it was supposed to be. If anyone says the dialogue is weak, the one-liners fall flat, the plot is brain-dead, or the acting is bad, I think they just aren't getting it. Sometimes these films are more about creating powerful, adrenaline pumping "Hell YEAH!!!!" imagery than anything close to cerebral stimulation. I know it ain't for everyone, but I absolutely loved every minute of it and so seemed the rest of the packed theater.

Another thing that struck me is how young Stallone looked in this film. Grecian Formula, Botox, whatever he's doing -- it works. The dude looks about 20 years younger than he is.

The only criticism I had was that some of the fight scenes were very quick-cut, and I'm not a fan of that style. I know in some films it's used to make up for poor shots by directors who don't know how to film action convincingly, but Stallone just ain't one of those guys. I'm much more a fan of full action shots where you can really take in the movements, but there is still plenty of "damn that had to hurt!" to go around in THE EXPENDABLES. If you don't see it, you're missing out, and if you're a guy and don't like it, there's something seriously wrong with you.

Image

P.S. -- the trailers were mostly for other upcoming action films, and one that interested me seems to be another similar multi-action star collaboration film called MACHETE, starring Danny Trejo. It also has Steven Seagal and Robert DeNiro. Never would have imagined Seagal and DeNiro sharing a film together. I'll have to see it. :)

Ripper, I think EXPENDABLES was everything I wanted in an action flick! LOVED the fights (that first fight with Stallone and Statham against the soldiers was AMAZING!) and I, too, dug the hell out of Mickey Rourke (Neat seeing him and Eric Roberts in a film together after all these years, even if they didn't share the screen).
I gotta disagree with you guys on ROCKY V though. Even Stallone siad this film was pretty much an abomination. And I thought ROCKY BALBOA< with the obvious exception of the original, was the best film in the series! Some fine acting moments for Stallone and Paulie in this one.

Didn't get to see The Expendables yet, but speaking of Rocky.. I loved Rocky Balboa, even though he looked a bit like a shar pei in it, lol, but the movie had the feel of Rocky and Rocky II, the best ones, and that made it good.

Absolutely, and there is also that great scene in Rocky Balboa where he breaks down talking about his wife's passing. Stallone is an incredible talent and a great actor who unfortunately (and unfairly) was stereotyped by the two iconic characters he played. Rocky was his own creation, and he wrote that first screenplay himself. It's absolutely brilliant, and he wouldn't sell out until the studio agreed to let him play the part. The story is fascinating:

In 1974 a broke, beaten down actor/screenwriter name Sylvester Stallone was attending a boxing match of a “nobody” boxer with the great Mohammed Ali and Stallone became inspired by this nobody fighter who “went the distance” with the greatest boxer ever live.

Stallone rushed home and in three days he wrote the first draft of the screenplay entitled Rocky. Down to his last $106, Stallone submitted his screenplay to his agent. A studio offered $20,000 with either Ryan O’Neal or Burt Reynolds playing the lead character. Stallone was excited by the offer but wanted to play the lead himself and he offered to act for free. Stallone was told, “That’s not the way it works in Hollywood.” Stallone turned down the offer though desperately needed the money.

Then the studio offered him $80,000 on the condition that he wouldn’t play the lead. Stallone turned them down again.

The studio told him that Robert Redford was interested, and this time the studio would pay him $200,000 for him to not play the lead. Stallone turned them down once more.

The studio upped their offer to $300,000 for his script. Stallone told them that he didn’t want to go through his whole life wondering “what if?”

The studio again upped their offer to $330,000. Stallone told them that he’d rather not see the movie made if he couldn’t play the lead.

So, studio finally agreed to let him play the lead. Stallone was paid $20,000 for his script plus $340 per week minimum pay for an actor at the time. After expenses, agent fees, and taxes, Stallone netted about $6,000 instead of $330,000.

In 1976 Stallone was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor. The movie Rocky won three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing. The Rocky series has since grossed almost $1 billion, making Sylvester Stallone an international movie star!

Sylvester Stallone rather stayed broke then to sell his dream, not even for $330,000. His passion to act in the role of Rocky was so big that it wasn’t negotiable.

Believe in yourself! Follow your gut and stick to your guns. You are not for sale.

And the rest is history. I've read he's playing John Gotti in his next film. I'm really interested in seeing that.

All were approached. Stallone said Van Damme and Seagal would have had to lose their fights, they didn't like that. But Van Damme says Stallone approached him about a chance to make a lot of money and he says that is not what's important to him when deciding on a role. As for Chuck, I think Stallone said he never responded...

Very interesting, thanks for the info! I searched it and found this on: http://www.theexpendablesmovie.net/

Why Van Damme & Seagal Wouldn't Do The Expendables
August 17, 2010

When news about The Expendables -- an action movie that would bring together stars like Sly Stallone, Jet Li, and Jason Statham -- hit in 2008, we wondered who else would join the ensemble affair. By the time Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture signed on, it was clear Sly was digging lots of old and new-school names out of the woodwork. But even after Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed to make appearances, some names didn't, specifically Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. Was there just no room for them, or was it something else?

According to another British "report" -- quotations used because these things only seem accurate maybe half the time -- Sly says the two '80s action stars weren't involved because the lacked the right sense of humor.

WENN shares a report from Britain's Sunday Times, where Stallone says: "I wanted to set Jean-Claude against Jet Li, but he didn't want to lose to Jet. He didn't think that was cool. But that's why it would be cool; to have Jean-Claude beaten by the other man. Hey, they could have a rematch. But Steven Seagal and Van Damme, they weren't really into our gallows humor."

Refusing to lose on the big screen may have kept the masses from seeing Van Damme beat down by Li, but it also kept him, and Seagal away from a number-one movie, which is something both aging stars could use right about now. Though, by the same token, it has kept them from a film chastised by many action film fans.

Did they make the right decision? Was the film missing the smarminess of Seagal and Van Damme's kickboxing ways?

Then I found this that has some of the same info, but more from Van Damme's side (pardon this dude's spelling -- his mistakes): http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.p ... z0wvUYVVfp

Jean-Claude Van Damme Role In The Expendables Revealed

Not what you expected! :D
Jean-Claude Van Damme claims that he didn't want to take part in Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables," because Stallone refused to give him story details. But according to Stallone, that wasn't the case.

"I wanted to set Jean-Claude against Jet Li as Gunnar Jensen, but he didn't want to lose to Jet," Stallone told The Sunday Times. "He didn't think that was cool. But that's why it would be cool; to have Jean-Claude beaten by the other man. Hey, they could have a rematch. But Steven Seagal and Van Damme, they weren't really into our gallows humor."

During a premiere for the movie, Stallone said that he and Van Damme recent spoke and Van Damme regrets not accepting Stallone's offer to be in the movie. The three including seagal are now figuring out how to work together on the sequel. Is the Rumble In The Bronxs star still up to it you decide discuss amongst yourselves on who would you like to see on the sequel.

Here's something about Chuck Norris -- Stallone mentioned him to a fan at the Comic Con 2010 Expendables panel:

A guy in a Punisher shirt asked if there was anyone Stallone wanted who he didn't get. He said he spoke to Van Damme, Seagal and Chuck Norris. But scheduling and "other extenuating circumstances, like INSANITY" (huge laugh) prevented certain people from taking part.
