At the start of each school day, Muslim students kneel on large colorful prayer rugs and recite verses from the Quran.
In addition to reading, writing and arithmetic, the young people learn Arabic, delve into Islamic studies and explore the holy book of their faith. Young girls wearing white hijabs talk animatedly in the hallways as they head to afternoon prayer.
It's all happening at the new $9 million Mercy School complex which opened earlier this month just northwest of the intersection of Memorial Road and Santa Fe Avenue in northwest Oklahoma City. The school complex at 14001 N Harvey is nestled among several small businesses and abuts the Glen Oaks neighborhood.
Vice Principal Kenza Lahmamsi, said student population at the private Islamic school increased dramatically this year from 153 to 247 because the new building allows the school to serve more students. The school, formerly at 3900 NW 39, offers studies for youths in prekindergarten through 10th grade.
"We were very limited on size. We had applicants, but we couldn't increase class size, so we put everyone on a waiting list," Lahmamsi said. "We are very happy to have this new building. Some of the closets here are as big as some of our classrooms at our former building."
The Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City broke ground on the multimillion dollar complex in 2005 amid much fanfare.
The 80,000-square-foot complex includes the recently opened school and a mosque. The completed school includes an expansive lobby area, administrative offices and three classroom wings housing prekindergarten and kindergarten students, middle school students and ninth- and 10th-graders. Lahmamsi said. She said the school will add 11th grade next year and 12th grade the next year.
Lahmamsi said construction crews have not completed the interior of the mosque and the large multipurpose area that will house the school's cafeteria and indoor recreation area.
She said a science lab and space for several additional classrooms is also in the works. Recently, crews were working on an outdoor basketball court, which Lahmamsi said may help the school retain its middle-school male students. She said an outdoor walking track is also planned.
The school's opening during the holy month of Ramadan made the new school year much more exciting for the students, parents and teachers, Lahmamsi said.
Lahmamsi, who converted to Islam about six years ago, said her preschool daughter is enrolled at the school. She said Muslim parents choose Mercy School for their children because it helps the young people maintain their Islamic identity.
"That's why we were founded," she said.
Lahmamsi said local public schools have been OK for Muslim students, but Mercy School allows them to show individual expressions of their faith. For instance, Muslims are required to pray five times a day. Since one of those prayer times falls during the school day, the youths join in prayer together daily in a multipurpose area at the complex.
Lahmamsi said the school also is accommodating to female students who wear hijabs. She said female students at the school are required to wear the traditional Muslim head scarf once they enter fifth grade. The school will soon build an 8-foot fence around an outdoor playground area so that young female students may play outdoors with other girls without wearing the headscarves. Hijabs are worn as a symbol of a woman's Islamic faith, and wearers typically refrain from wearing their hair uncovered around anyone other than other women or male family members.

LOL. I don't expect anything better from you. You have proven over and over again that you enjoy being at the bottom of the barrel with no scruples whatsoever and generally don't give a damn what people think of you. And, I doubt the families of the victims of 9/11 would ever want people like you to speak for them and point out examples of how they feel.

Obama is correct on this issue. Muslims DO have the same rights as others to worship as they see fit. Obama however, didn't come forth and say it should be built at Ground Zero though. You can't argue with the Constitution regarding the legality of this. Again though, if the Muslims wanted to rise above the fray for just once, they could simply say they realize the sensitivity of the issue and will build it elsewhere. That's the play to make.

This where you have to separate "legally" correct and "humanly" correct. The mosque's construction is nothing more than a transparent attempt to build a trophy of Islamic victory on an already hurt city. And anyone that can't see that is just plain fucking stupid.

EXACTLY! The letter of the law vs the spirit of the law!

Anyway you guys slice it, you are all acting like communists dictating where a person can practice their religion...and you are on the wrong side of liberty.

Amazingly, somehow, you grow dumber by the fucking minute. Islam is not a religion. It's a radical ideology that demands world domination. There is a "convert or die" rally cry behind it and I wish to do neither, asshole. There are roughly 800 years of proof suggesting as much. How many suicide bombings, beheadings, honor killings, stonings and amputations do you need before you open up your fucking eyes and get your mouth off of the ACLU's rotten cock?
These media blowhards are able to dupe dumbfucks like you with civilian casualties because these maggots have no regard for human life and use women and children as human shields. There are no "moderate" muslims. The Q'ran is pretty specific about lying and killing in the interest of Islam, and that's exactly what these people are doing. What kind of "religion" attempts to erect a house of worship over a fucking mass grave site and against the overwhelming wishes of a grieving community and nation?! You're a fucking coward and a traitor as far as I'm concerned, and so is anyone else that supports this building for further terrorist funding.
