Pit Bull Kills 7-Year-Old On Local Farm

This just took place near my home today:

VARNA -- A 7-year-old boy was attacked and killed by dogs on a Central Illinois farm that he was visiting Wednesday with his mother, authorities said.

Jason Walter of LaSalle was alone when he was attacked and died in the driveway of a farm outside Varna, about 30 miles northeast of Peoria, Marshall County Sheriff Rob Russell said.

The dogs, three pit bulls and a mixed breed owned by people who lived on the property, were captured and euthanized, Russell said. No charges have been filed, and there is no legal requirement to keep dogs on leashes, he said. The dogs' bodies will undergo testing for rabies.

"It was an emotional scene," Russell said. "Obviously, it's a tragedy."

The boy's mother was dating a man who lived on the farm and the boy was heading to the car to leave when the dogs attacked, the sheriff said.

An emergency helicopter was called to transport the boy to the hospital. Coroner David Lenz Jr. said a doctor aboard the helicopter pronounced the child dead

An autopsy is planned, and the death remains under investigation.

The boy was a second-grader at Northwest School in LaSalle, said Superintendent Dan Marenda. Social workers and counselors will be available Thursday at the school to help students and teachers deal with the tragedy, Marenda said.

Personally I think owning a pit bull is equal to owing a bobcat or a cougar. It's not that you have to teach them to kill - they know that instinctively. You have to tame them just like a wild horse or a circus lion. If you don't, they will remain killers.

On the other hand, pomeranians are not killers by instinct. If you want a safe dog, buy a pom. If you want a killer dog, buy a pit bull. It's not like people don't know they are killers... it's pretty common knowledge.

I don't know... one of my poms has anxiety real bad from being in a puppy store for six months before we bought him. He runs away from his own shadow. He would never harm anyone... he won't even bite people.

I've only been around a few pit bulls and they were fairly tame, but you can tell they are strong as hell. A friend of mine had one, and he would play with it sometimes by holding the knotted end of a short thick rope out to the dog. The pit bull would grab onto it with those incredible jaws, then my friend would lift the dog up off the ground by the rope because the dog would never let go.

I do believe many of the dogs have been bred as fighters and that's the attraction for owning one, no matter how you try to tame it. They are extremely popular with rednecks, too. Here's an interesting article about it, with opinions on their nature and whether they should be kept around kids.

I've worked at animal shelters for years.....pit bulls are very dangerous dogs even as puppies. There are some good ones of course, but some are born killers. We had an entire litter born into the shelter where we were hand feeding and loving them, 2 of them attacked and killed another litter mate at 10 weeks. Some lines have just had the "attack" bred into them for too long....just like terriers have to dig or pointers have to hunt.....

How many times do you hear the same story-pit bull attacks small child-owner/neighbors go on and on about how surprised they are because the dog was so friendly and would never hurt anyone. These dogs DO have a natural violent side to them. Sure there are other breeds that on occasion will attack a child but I would be willing to bet the number of pit bull attacks far out numbers any other breeds and possibly even all other breeds combined.
