Yep....3 hrs by plane....quite a way.

Tasmania is the island south of mainland Australia (and a state of AU) and New Zealand is the other island country in the region....1200mi East of AU.

(Sorry, used to live next door to a Timorese couple who'd get shirty with Aussies claiming NZ was our nearest neighbour. The Indonesians look at you funny when you say that too.)

I have some friends who live in the area; they told me that because the earthquake happened in the very early hours of the morning, so no one was out and about, there haven't been any deaths and only a very few injuries. If the quake had hit four hours later, there would have been a huge injury/mortality rate.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!
