I agree, major earsore here ...
I'll bet it was a different story actually being there, though!!

I know, they should just quit! It just sucks having a singer who actually wants to sing. Hey, this could be like the Van Halen forum, wouldn't that be great!
I don't like it, 78 ...I hope your eyes roll right outta yo head!! How's
that for some crazy~ass diction?!?!

Deb~ I agree w/you, per usual!! Now, as I was saying, I'll bet if I were actually at the show, I would've enjoyed it!!
Stay off my ass, pinheads ...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

Its not that fact that you don't like it, which is not actually what you said, its the making fun. My comment was really directed at Jim, but you decided to pile on. Where I come from its not cool to make fun of the way people talk, especially when there's a chance they might read it.

Dude, if you think I was mocking him, or making fun of him... You're wrong. I was trying to type what I'm hearing when he sings my favorite songs. Is it his fault? No! He is an amazing singer with some serious qualities to his voice! He has a hell of a range in his vocals too (which I HIGHLY respect!).

I just don't believe that an iconic "American" band should have got a vocalist with a foreign accent. I don't give a shit WHERE he's from, but if his vocals don't sound "American"... it distracts the shit out of me. He could be from France for all I give a shit! It's not just that though...

I've commented on his jumping around like a monkey before too. There, I WAS making fun of him! He needs to take some time to watch videos of some great frontmen, and find his own gig up there. Jumping around like a monkey looks ridiculous and pulls me out of the whole experience! Everyone I know that saw the Superbowl video said the same comment without me even mentioning it. They also commented on his eyes. They said they looked like this...

He looked very odd and out of place. Also, the bands performance and the sound quality sucked ASS for that show.

Anyway, sorry if my opinion offended you.

Darn it Jim, you're just to nice! I get what you were saying now.

I know a lot of people are bothered by the accent. I do notice, it stands out on DSB sometimes especially, but it doesn't really bother.

Its all good, but watch out for MG, shes Pissed!

maybe somewhat, but those comments would be there regardless of who was singing unless they were named Steve Perry. Augeri didn't get it much better when he joined the band in '98. The difference is there was no youtube at that point.

hmmmm, something to think about ...
I also thought quite a bit about the racism/diction debate last night ...after I sent myself to my room.
Does anyone sing C~I~T~Y when they sing along to Lights, w/SP?!?! I realized I don't, so
I called a few friends from home/the Midwest and we all agreed, you don't ever sing C~I~T~Y
when you're singing w/Sp, it is most definitely C~I~T~A~Y ...if you do sing C~I~T~Y, you're
a loser ...Sweet and Simple!! When we sing w/SP, we mock SP, I think he would be flattered.
That said, how many of us mock Arnel when we sing along?!?! Do you think he would
be flattered if we mocked the words he has coined ?!?!
Would we be racist if we mocked AP and were not Filipino?!?! hmmmm!!! :?

Give me a break. No one is racist for saying that Arnel got poor diction. Even I notice it, so you people (with english as a first language) got to be real bugged by it. Arnel's job is to sing the songs, simple as that. Wether or not the pronunciation thing is just his "thing", you know, his special trick to change the songs up, or if it's just lazyness; that's a whole other subject. I'd go for him being lazy.

And for the record: it's citay

I could care less if Arnel was black, white, purple, green, or some other color. I don't care if he was American or Japanese. The fact I don't enjoy him singing some of the Journey tunes has nothing to do with his talent or vocal range, both of which I can recognize.

At this point, I'm not shocked people are attacking Steve Perry, and by being out of the limelight, to some degree he may be inviting some criticism. That said, he created a legacy that stands to this day and many people are finding hard to replicate on a consistent basis without blowing out their voices. I know you do it well Jeremey, but I think you know what I mean here. Anyone stepping into those shoes has a lot to fill in the mind of fans. For some, anyone BUT SP would be wrong; it will never matter.

I find it hard to bash someone for doing what they think is best for themselves. As a fan, I can wish it was another way, but without being in their shoes, I can't bash them for making the choices that are made. I can't blame him for staying retired, but neither can I blame the rest of the band deciding that they don't want to be retired.

StyxCollector wrote:That said, he created a legacy that stands to this day and many people are finding hard to replicate on a consistent basis without blowing out their voices.

Considering you could probably say he blew out his own voice on that catalog, I find it surprising when people are surprised other singers have the same problem. For better or worse, those songs aren't meant or designed for the 50+ year old male voice to sing them in their original key. Sure, there might be a few high tenors who kept their range, but most lost it either intentionally (smoking, drugs, etc), naturally (the voice dropping as they age), or otherwise.

That's it--bottom line. Youtube's generally un-moderated status makes it the worst of the worst if one wants to go searching for pure hate.

I think that describes me.....right or wrong it's how I feel.

I don't think that spreading hate on You Tube is okay it's not IMO.

It's weird....I don't have a problem with the Tribute Bands.....they are paying homage to the songs and the band.

It's the when you try to put someone else out in front of the actual band...I just don't like it....and I know it's my

loss....but I have the right to say for ME it's not the same.

I can't say that I feel the same. When Augeri first came onto the scene, I LOVED Journey. I saw them 4 times with him, and thought they were great! I will say though, that by the end... they were sounding rough. I was EXTREMELY excited by Arrival, and I thought it had (and still do) some kick-ass Journey songs. I was excited to be a Journey fan again.

With that said though, I embraced Arnel (at first). He had great range, cool vibrato, and he sang in pitch and on key. I thought he really had something special. That was until I saw him live and saw how he acted on stage. I also assumed (after hearing that he was working with a vocal coach) that his diction issues would disappear. They haven't, and to me, I can no longer accept this incarnation as Journey.

If they come out with a new release, I will buy it. Just like I've bought everything else Journey has ever released. Will it be any good? I don't know, but I can tell you that after hearing it'll be a middle eastern sounding theme album... I'm not excited at ALL! :? My opinion is release another fucking Journey album that your fans will like, or call it a day!

Guess we'll see soon enough.

I can say that I like Arrival....it took me a long time to purchase it.....I now can listen to it and I know all the words to all the songs....but for me it's not Journey..it's a band with some of the line up and a new singer and I enjoy them!

I know that some people don't understand that for some fans there is only one Journey...and it can't be replicated.

This incarnation for me is the hardest to accept...with AP's stage presence, AP out singing cover tunes at every turn, and the diction issues it's just too many things...but that being said...I don't want another Journey...I loved the one that gave me the songs that are still my favorites.

I have said it before....and well I know many here feel different...it's fine.

Now, just reread the above and 1.) point out where I was making fun of another as I was stating my opinion

You were agreeing with Jim and since I thought he was making fun, guilty by association. However, after his explanation, I will withdraw my rolling eye.

2.) cover up
all of the names/fake names and tell me who sounds like a tantrum thrower ...and should probably go to their room until they can
straighten up!!

Obviously that would be you! Since you sent yourself to your room

And BTW don't be making fun of SP, its CITY!

Um, he's singing live, yes, but it is a video recording. One can use protools on the video and then publish it to Youtube...

Doesn't look entirely live to me. Check especially the guitar solo out, it's not in sync with the audio. I think they recorded their parts and re-recorded things like vocals, guitars and backing vocals. Or possibly they recorded all parts in the studio and playbacked for the video, which would be my guess.

Decent singer, but lacks the warmth Perry had, even when singing higher. Arnel has more warmth in his voice than this guy. And more power.

Agreed. Never heard him before, weird that Schon did not find this guy on his YT search. But I do think that in Arnel they have a much more versatile singer, he is much more than just a Perry impersonator.

Always nice to see a fellow Dutchman, but this is not close to Perry at all. Too thin a voice and they would have had dictation issues with this guy too ;)

I'm glad they went with Arnel.

I find it hard to bash someone for doing what they think is best for themselves. As a fan, I can wish it was another way, but without being in their shoes, I can't bash them for making the choices that are made. I can't blame him for staying retired, but neither can I blame the rest of the band deciding that they don't want to be retired.

I don't disagree, and wasn't criticizing him for staying retired. The perceived problem by his silence (as interpreted by his detractors) is the problem. SP doesn't owe anyone anything. If he's made enough money to live without having to work nearly 15 years after TBF (can you believe it?) and is happy, that's a pretty amazing thing. Wish I could be there! lol

I just watched a bit of the Manila show on Palladia again - it's bad. It has nothing to do with the bad sound mix. I love Arnel's energy and his vocal range, but that's about it.

I'm with you - I threw it in a couple weeks ago after sitting on it for nearly a year (when did it come out? last October, right?). It was still just plain not good.
