MOST religions have an "Us VS Them" mentality. Most religions have a "cult" mentality. The saved against the unsaved, the protestants against the catholics, the muslims against seemingly everyone, and on and on.

How bout we put all the posturing and fairy tales aside and take the attitude of:

"Hey, You know what Achmed? You know what Billy Bob? You know what Jeremiah?
This God thing might pan out for us, and it might not. How about we take the time that we all have on the planet and learn to get along and learn to deal with each other?"

It could never happen even at the risk of global war. People would rather be right than to put in the work it takes to have peace.

FBI agents visit Florida church over Quran burn

Posted 9/9/2010 2:47 PM ET

By Antonio Gonzalez And Mitch Stacy, Associated Press Writer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — FBI agents visited Thursday with a minister of a small Florida church that plans to burn the Quran on Sept. 11, as public safety became a paramount concern and President Barack Obama added his voice to the chorus of opposition.
Elsewhere, hundreds of angry Afghans burned an American flag and chanted "Death to the Christians" to protest the planned burning of Islam's holiest text.

Obama urged the Rev. Terry Jones to "listen to those better angels" and call off his plan.

In an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America," Obama said what Jones proposes "is completely contrary to our values as Americans. This country has been built on the notion of freedom and religious tolerance."

The FBI spent about a half hour talking with Jones, but church spokesman Wayne Sapp would not disclose what they discussed. Agents leaving the church wouldn't talk to an Associated Press reporter.

Jones said earlier this week that agents have visited him twice since he announced his plans in July, the last visit about two weeks ago.

Jones will make a statement later Thursday that will address the FBI visit and the president's statement imploring him to cancel the burning and calling it a "stunt," his spokesman said.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist said he would closely monitor what happens Saturday at the Dove Outreach Center in Gainesville to try to ensure people are safe. U.S. embassies around the world will be doing the same after being ordered by the State Department to assess their security. Officials fear the burning could spark anti-American violence, including against soldiers.

"In addition to being offensive, the Gainesville protest puts at risk those brave Americans who are fighting abroad for the freedoms and values that we believe in as Americans," said Crist, who is running as an independent for the U.S. Senate.

The international police organization Interpol issued a global alert to its 188 member-countries determining "strong likelihood" of violent attacks if the burn goes forward. Interpol said in a statement that Pakistan's interior minister, Rehman Malik, called the organization and asked it to warn other police forces around the world of an increased terror threat.

In Afghanistan, local officials in Mahmud Raqi, the capital of the Kapisa province some 60 miles northeast of Kabul, estimated that up to 4,000 people protested the planned burning. But NATO spokesman James Judge said there were between 500 to 700 people. Judge added that the Quran burning is "precisely the kind of activity the Taliban uses to fuel their propaganda efforts to reduce support" for coalition forces.

Despite the mounting pressure to call off the bonfire, Jones said he has received much encouragement and supporters have sent him copies of the Quran to burn.

"As of right now, we are not convinced that backing down is the right thing," said Jones, 58, who took no questions at a news conference Wednesday.

Jones said in an interview with USA Today that he had not been contacted by the White House, State Department or Pentagon. If such a call comes, he said, "that would cause us to definitely think it over. That's what we're doing now. I don't think a call from them is something we would ignore."

At Wednesday's news conference, Jones was flanked by an armed escort and said he has received more than 100 death threats since announcing in July that he would stage "International Burn-a-Koran Day." The book, according to Jones, is evil because it espouses something other than biblical truth and incites radical, violent behavior among Muslims.

Muslims consider the Quran the word of God and insist it be treated with the utmost respect. At least one cleric in Afghanistan said it is the duty of Muslims to react and that could mean killing Americans.

In Gainesville, police will already be dealing with some 90,000 football fans Saturday and even more tailgaters for the Florida-South Florida game.

Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe condemned the church's plans and asked residents to watch for suspicious behavior. At least one counter-protest was planned by a University of Florida student group.

City officials were increasing security, but wouldn't go into detail about how many extra officers will be used, saying only that they were coordinating with other cities and tallying expenses.

"We are sending a bill for services to the Dove World Outreach Center. We're tracking our costs," said city spokesman Bob Woods. "I'm sure the cost will be substantial."

Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, e-mailed The Associated Press to say "images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan -- and around the world -- to inflame public opinion and incite violence." It comes as an emotional debate continues over a proposed Islamic center near the ground zero site of the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said that the pastor's plans were outrageous, and along with Defense Secretary Robert Gates, urged Jones to cancel the event.

Not just the Democratic administration has weighed in. Ex-Alaska governor and former Republican candidate for vice president Sarah Palin said in a Facebook post that although people have the constitutional right to burn the Quran, doing so would be an "insensitive and an unnecessary provocation -- much like building a mosque at ground zero."

Conservative radio and television host Glenn Beck wrote in an Internet blog that burning the Quran is like burning the flag or the Bible -- something people can do in the United States, but shouldn't. Legal experts have said the burning would likely be protected by the First Amendment's right to free speech.

The foreign ministries of Pakistan and the Gulf nation of Bahrain issued some of the first official denunciations in the Muslim world, with Bahrain calling it a "shameful act which is incompatible with the principles of tolerance and coexistence." Bahrain is home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, which is responsible for naval forces in the Persian Gulf.

The president of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has also sent a letter to Obama asking him to stop the bonfire.

In Pakistan, about 200 lawyers and civil society members marched and burned a U.S. flag in the central Pakistani city of Multan, demanding that Washington halt the burning of the Muslim holy book.

"If Quran is burned, it would be beginning of destruction of America," read one English-language banner held up by the protesters, who chanted "Down with America!"

Jones' Dove Outreach Center is independent of any denomination. It follows the Pentecostal tradition, which teaches that the Holy Spirit can manifest itself in the modern day. Pentecostals often view themselves as engaged in spiritual warfare against satanic forces.

The Vatican also denounced the protest and a religious watchdog group, Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said it would send a copy of the Quran to the Afghan National Army for every one that might be burned.

Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist Billy Graham, tried to call Jones twice on Wednesday but was unable to reach him and has now written him a letter urging him not to proceed, according to a spokesman.

"It's never right to deface or destroy sacred texts or writings of other religions even if you don't agree with them," Franklin Graham said in a statement.

In 2001, Graham described Islam as evil. The U.S. Army earlier this year rescinded his invitation to speak at a Pentagon prayer breakfast after a religious freedom group raised an objection, citing his past remarks.

I'm on your side, man. I think that, for the most part, religion is a colossal waste of time. Rather than reading 2,000 year old bullshit, going to church and believing in something that there's not one scintilla of evidence to justify, try coaching kids, spending that time with your own kids, helping out at a homeless shelter, working at a YMCA, Boys and Girls Club or any one of a number of things that we are certain actually do exist. I'm quite sure God doesn't need us praying to him. He needs us to help and care for each other. If he/she/it does exist, I'd bet that that would be the best thanks we could give.

I've still been following the story on that Florida pastor (fraud) who is planning on burning some Korans. Turns out he started a church in Germany years ago, and they kicked him out for dipping into church funds to pay personal expenses. Read an article yesterday about how ridiculous all the attention he's getting is -- even Angelina Jolie, the pope, the president, and everyone else under the sun -- they are all chirping in. I think he's loving his time in the spotlight. Someone needs to kneecap him.

The once beautiful catholic church the Haggia Sophia has now been turned into a mosque. It was a beautiful piece of art history. Now discs with Muslim writing cover once beautiful tile work, and historical artwork from the middle ages. My only concern is not with them being able to worship, but I only wonder why the need to invade, kill or harm anyone who thinks differently than you. (extremists of any religion is my concern)
This church was conquered. And the Muslim artwork clashes with the early mid-evil artwork. I think we need to stress that if Christian religion here is not allowed almost anywhere in public these days........what gives the muslims more rights than we have? And most christian religions today are peaceful. If we blocked streets someone would be screaming to high heaven to get our butts arrested! LOL! But put on a head to toe sheet and ................................we must honor their rights! LOL!

I honestly have nothing against peaceful Muslims. I do think we need to beware a con-questing religious group of muslims who are apparently growing an agenda of takeover. [/img]

Islam definitely has a LONG history of wiping out history, architecture, writings, etc., from other religions and cultures. While I agree that a majority of Muslims are peaceful, I don't agree that their religion is peaceful. That being said, the vast majority of Muslims who ARE peaceful, certainly don't bother speaking out against terrorism committed in the name of their religion (there are a few who do) like they do when someone burns their holy book or draws a cartoon of their "prophet".

The difference? The difference is, other than relatively rare examples like the guy who shot abortion doctor Tiller in Kansas, the instances of deadly violence are far, far more rare than from those who practice radical Islam.

BTW, I don't agree with anyone blocking a street, abortion clinic, etc. As for protesting against gay rights or protesting against anything, for that matter, this is a free country. As long as you're not physically harming someone or breaking some other law, you have a right to do so. You DON'T have a right to physically harm someone.

My personal belief is that Muslims are not of God and they already have rooms reserved in hell. Any religion that has a take over, convert or die mentality can't be any good. Every day, all over the world, you can see who is causing most of the trouble. Oh, a car bomb here, a suicide bomber there.... pretty much all Muslims. How come we don't read about a bunch of Christians, blowing themselves and others up.....every day?
Religion of peace....my ass!

For instance, I get tickled every time you guys bring up the crusades as the be all of christian evil. Uh...........Catholic church my friend. Most religions had to practice underground due to their murdering any other religious practice as heretics . The faith I believe in does not condone violence of any kind. FYI fully studied the Crusades in Advanced Art History with a Muslim friend of mine. It was an online course. You want an interesting discussion! The Catholic church had a history of murder, mob like rule, and "indulgences".......buying off sin. One artist murdered another................and his "penance" was to paint a picture of David killing Goliath. He died on the way to deliver it. Art history is interesting! I love it!

In defense of the Catholic friends I know, it is peaceful today. Biggest problem with them is sweeping child molesters into another perish to hide them. They should out them and never allow them around children again.

Most Christians today, following New Testament guides of living, would not and should not wish harm on anyone. If they are, they violate the very teachings of Jesus.

No one I know would try to hurt someone for bible burning. Matter of fact burning a book is pointless to me. You can burn the book, but the book is not holy. Gods word is. It does not reside on a page, but in my heart. So burn away.

Also, think of how many ways Jesus has been depicted in unflattering ways by atheists? In art.........The Chocolate Jesus. South Park.............need I say more? Any anti-religious movie or joke. Cartoons.........etc.

Never made me go out and seek to kill someone. It really is only a depiction of the man, not the man itself. Why get mad? Just don't give it more attention than it deserves.

No one cares to upset Christians.................why? They are for the most part.............NON VIOLENT. Jesus's words "He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword." Upon his capture to be brought before Pilot knowing he faced death........Peter cut off the ear of a soldier to defend Jesus. Jesus restored the mans ear and told him not to harm them. If someone claiming to be a Christian, tries to hurt others...........they are sinners at that point not Christians at all. So much for our dangerous existence.

Did I note I do not approve of extremists of any religion? I have never protested abortion clinics, gay rights etc......  Look not all religions are the same. For instance, I get tickled every time you guys bring up the crusades as the be all of christian evil. Uh...........Catholic church my friend. Most religions had to practice underground due to their murdering any other religious practice as heretics . The faith I believe in does not condone violence of any kind. Turn the other cheek my brother. Hug your neighbor, not mug your neighbor! That is my motto!

Yes, Catholics ARE Christians.... so they aren't wrong when they say that  And at the time of the Crusades and where they occured, they were the only predominately practicing Christian religion that existed. The Catholic religion was the religion that the other main stream christian churches broke from, yes. But as far as the majority of Christians at that time, they WERE Catholic. Back then to say you were Christian WAS Catholic. Now people deny Catholics are and I have a problem with that.

LOL! Look above.............I said Catholics today are not violent. And I did not say they were not Christians. I was noting the Catholics of that time period. I am sure many Catholic followers of that time did not condone the Crusades either. But what I was trying to point out was other Christian religions had to go underground to practice their faith. Literally. Because the Catholic families that run the church of that time would kill you if you believed in any thing other than what they taught.

I am just saying most Christian faiths today are peaceful. Sorry if I offended. :(

No, Im not offended. The Christians at that time were wrong. Forcing religion on anyone in a violent way IS wrong. That was most certainly not what Jesus taught. But that is how those at the time interpretted Christianity, yes, like extremist Muslims do today. Spreading the faith at any cost. Not even seeing it as murder. But many Christian churches today it seems like to separate Catholic out, as a separate religion, just as Jewish, and Islam are, and they have Christian as a whole separate entity, aside from them. I am not saying necessarily that you think that way, but I have heard it "from the horses mouth" so to speak, at a non-demoniational bible study I tried once. The more evangelical a Christian church is, the more they like to point out that they don't include Catholics as being "Christian". So that is what I have a problem with. Not you Ginger!!
