Yep, lazy… :P

I didn't mean you specifically when I said superiority.. I meant it in a general way because this same debate has happened here a LOT, and I have always said that it was unnecessary.

I would not demean a person's choice of music, movies, whaetver the topic was just becasue I wasn't knowledgable or interested in said topic... but maybe that's just me. I know a lot of people do that, and it's not right. I've certainly been talked down to enough in my life for not sharing this or that interested and it's just wrong. So I don't do it. I absolutely have no interest or knowledge about Nascar, for example, but 2 good friends of mine are into it - do they put me down for being lazy? No. Do I put them down for having an interest I don't have? No. It's the same principle.

I'm sure it's out there. That said, to the best of my knowledge, the music industry had NEVER done a full-scale kill-off of basically every popular band out there at one time. Maybe some small ones here and there (ie disco), but never anything this big. You could easily make the debate that AOR was already dead long before grunge arrived, having been replaced by hair metal and glam.

That said, I can't think of a time before where big bands that had sold 10 million records the album before (and would probably sell 1 Million+ with minimal promotion), and are struggling to get radio airplay. Name the number of bands in the 70s or 80s that had hit records in the 90s. You could cut the list down to about one hand. That was unprecedented.

like I said, I think the music industry may eventually seriously regret this decision--if they haven't already. You have a staple of bands with built-in audiences that have been formed over several albums that they systematically kicked to the curb and said you don't matter anymore. That is MILLIONS of record sales every year for the next 15-20 years that the industry decided they didn't want to deal with. Breaking the band into the scene is the hard (and $$$) part. Once they are established, the hard work is over.

Quite astounding logic....

Hmmm....I don't think the industry ever regrets anything. There's one constant in the industry - change. The industry is doing just fine from a monetary standpoint. Don't let them fool you with headlines of revenue declines. Gaga, Fergie, Beiber, and debut CDs by AI winners can keep the industry in the black for years....Coldplay, M5, and the like can sustain them....and the dinosaur acts releasing GH packages with '2 new songs' added will do their share....and touring is the big money maker.....sadly, I think the music scene in this country is complete shit. It takes money to make money - but no one seems to want to risk their own money to usher in anything new. European bands will stick to Europe and Asia...and the U.S. will continue to churn out lame-ass music....with great U.S. bands touring small portions of their home country, while ignoring other parts of the nation - and also touring in Europe, cause they can make money there....it is what it is. Even the bands who have been around for awhile have to tour in Europe, SA and Asia...there seems to be way more of an interest in this kind of music there.

the music industry is operating on a VERY short-sighted principle at the moment. The big money doesn't come from the first hit record, it comes from the greatest hits that sells every year from a band that has done several cds. With the amount of cds you are expected to sell now, most bands never get to that point.

You are eventually going to shoot yourself in the foot if you continue to operate without giving acts a chance to develop and get a fanbase.

That tour would make no money in Europe either. Even Firefest has had major issues getting enough money to keep running--and that's a once a year show. Why do you think The Gods and the Z Rockfest went down? You are overestimating the number of people that are actually into this type of music.

D2, Nelson, Wig Wam and Gotthard could all make decent money on a tour playing 1000-5000 seat places if you combine them. When Gotthard is playing to 300 people in London, it's quite obvious the size of this European scene is being somewhat blown out of proportion. Sure, they might be playing to 20,000 in Switzerland, but outside of their home country, they mean nothing. Same with the others.

As far as some of the smaller bands, I doubt Unruly Child could fill a 200-seat venue on their own.

What bands were you exactly thinking of? Foreigner, Def Leppard, Journey and the like have already played Europe, but they are playing small-ish places or festivals. Whitesnake was HUGE (and IMO, better) in Europe before the US ever heard of them. Bon Jovi was as big in Europe as they were over here, and was drawing huge crowds, which allowed them to keep operating when the US market dried up. Same with Toto. If memory serves, the Van Halen tour of Europe with Hagar circa mid 90s was a flop.

Who exactly are these big bands that don't play over there?

For media sales, just getting a gold record is a small triumph right now. So, if the big names can't move product, what chance does a Danger Danger or WET have? iTunes has forever changed the game concerning writing one piece albums or gearing up to have one single that gets 300k downloads. With half of sales lost to piracy also, touring is the only safe money maker. If I was an older band, I wouldn't put anything new out either unless Wal-Mart or Best Buy are fronting it, it's just too much of a financial risk. Now, without new releases getting sales from the legacy acts in the genre, how do new acts think they are going to sell anything? It's not going to happen. If you are a newer artist or an older one who hasn't made it big yet in AOR, you're screwed. If you're also not making money on the road, you are pretty much dead.

can't say I disagree with any of this. One of the major failings of the music business that is coming around to bite them is ignoring any part of the population over about 25 when making pop music. The older fans are the ones with the available cash outlay now, and the ones paying $250 to see The Eagles perform. Walmart may have capitalized a bit on this, but it's a HUGE market share that been ignored up until now.

If you had had the likes of KISS, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Springsteen, Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Prince, The Rolling Stones, etc. hitting Europe every other year like they do/did here, the likes of Mr. Big would have the following they should have in Europe ... 500. But they were able to become the tallest midget because of a lack of interest in touring there extensively by the aforementioned bands ... and a ton that I probably missed.

A lot of those ARE playing Europe. Every band you mentioned has played Europe (or at least the UK) recently.

from 5 minutes of research--all 2010 unless otherwise noted...
Kiss….35 shows in 2010 for Sonic Boom
Journey…toured to support Revelation 2009
Foreigner….several Europe dates + festivals
Bon Jovi…full 2010 tour + London residency
Springsteen….2009 tour
Aerosmith….several shows in June-July
Motley Crue…at least 4 festival shows in August
Prince…whole bunch of shows this summer
Rolling Stones…2 legs of tour in 2007 for last tour (basically as many Europe shows as US shows)

You could make the point that a lot of them were NOT hitting Europe in the 80s when they should have, but most of them are playing there now--at least at festivals. Most US bands were like Journey and failed to acquire the European fanbase to support large venue gigs. Thus being why Journey is playing to 2-5k seat venues.

Anyway, Mr. Big's big popularity was in Japan, NOT Europe. The rabid Japanese fanbase kept them in business long after everywhere else had gone on to other bands.

Night Ranger and Mr. Big are more popular in Asia but not nearly as huge as Aerosmith who can still sell out 55k seaters in Tokyo.

Motley Crue has played in Europe and are a sought after Festival band over there. With the economy the way it is , don't be surprised to see more American bands going over the pond. Aerosmith was a headliner at Download last year and there is talk of Van Halen getting that spot this year. VH has never been into playing gigs in Europe but even now, their hand is being forced like other big acts.

Ah, but I'm assuming you have had some prior knowledge or experience with NASCAR (or auto racing in general) to decide that it does not appeal to you. That's the difference. If someone is already a fan of certain genre or activity, but chooses to ridicule someone's appreciation of an unfamiliar variation of said genre, without first making the effort to research it on their own or inquire about it, makes them short sighted and lazy.

Most tours that are successful here is due in large part to who is given the exposure to the public and who isn't. That tells me that most individuals just find it simpler to allow others (as in media) to decide what is cool/interesting. If many weren't content with being complacent, perhaps the options available here would be much broader and diverse. I'd love to support many of the shows occurring in the UK, Europe, or Asia, however, I am limited to the income that I have and, therefore, those options that big business has decided is worth my money not the other way around.

Disinterest based on knowledge, research, and experience (through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.-hand accounts) isn't lazy. Criticism based simply on one's unfamiliarity or lack of knowledge is lazy.

When was their last tour, 2007? Things have changed since then. Without a new album, I just don't see them having a tour as huge as Bon jovi or U2 had this past year.

Perhaps it's not worth the travel for you, because you do not appreciate much of the talent that frequents the festival.

For the record, Firefest is in it's 7th year because it was initially done for the love of the genre by fans, to fill a hole left by The Gods. They function on little to no sponsorship, yet they are able to attract a weekend full of acts that are exclusive to the UK (bands on the bill agree to not play anywhere else in the UK while they are there). Many of these bands are indeed large names for the region, therefore their clout in their region as a small festival is quite impressive.

Figure in the fact that they deliver every act as promised year after year, and still have money left over to fund the next one, is a testament to their success, even as a small independent outfit. So much so, that a venue in the states has approached them about doing it here. If all of that doesn't indicate the type of respect that they've earned with this festival, I don't know what else does. If they were to receive the sponsorship necessary to expand the festival and attract more global talent, I'm quite sure that one day they may be among the ranks of festivals such as Download or Sweden Rock, which are HUGE in Europe.

That's nothing to scoff at. :D

no, I'd use the following comparison...

Say person A loves ribeye. However, they have no interest in trying ribeye prepared with new way X with these ingredients (even though there is nothing in the ingredient list that they dislike). It wouldn't be a big change from what they are used to, but it requires trying something new and they see no reason to do so. They are satisfied with what they have as is.

let me add one more point here. For a lot of bands, it might be the only chance the fans ever have to see them live. The scene is small enough that a tour would lose money, but put enough bands together under one roof, and it becomes profitable.

For example, see the Tall Stories show last year. For me, and probably a lot of those here, if it didn't involve a trip across the Atlantic to get there, that would be worth the price of admission by itself. The last time one of the melodic bands played around here (House of Lords), they had about 15 people to see them go onstage in the middle of nowhere at 12:30 in the morning in this extremely small hole-in-the-wall club. Needless to say, they haven't been back. To see them, one must either wait for a European tour, or Firefest.

Define "extremely well" for us, first. I'm guessing that, if you were lucky, you'd get 500-1,500 fans. After security, travel, venue, equipment and transportation costs, each band would receive about $100. Hardly worth it. You'd be better off with a Danger Danger/Nelson double bill, as they're the only ones that have any sort of following.

That's the point...NO FOLLOWING. And why is that? Because the music scene here sucks ass. In Europe, this tour would rake in MILLIONS. Difference? Europeans know what good music is. And these bands tour throughout Eurasia...

And this is the reason why European and Asia CDs get bonus tracks, and U.S. versions get squat. This is why Mr. Big tours Asia extensively, and why ColdGay tours the U.S....this is why Europe has FIREFEST, and the U.S. has....well....NEARfest, and PROGfest...and Lilithfair, and Lalapaloser.

#1 Mr Big weren't good when they were good.
#2 Firefest is laughable. Mediocre talent and hardly worth traveling across the Atlantic.
#3 Those bands do well in Europe because that's all Europe gets. Get the bigger, better bands in Europe and the likes of Mr. Big would be playing in the park for free with Soto.
#4 You're right, the fests here that you mentioned suck assholes.

no, I'd use the following comparison...

No, no... it's semi-on par. It's cheese. I like cheese. I just don't have the interest in trying every type of cheese that exists to see what my opinion of it is. There's a lot of cheese out there. I may like brie. I may not. But the lack of affiliation with brie is not enough impetus for me to seek brie out to clear up the matter. There may come a time when I am offered brie in a moment where I'm open to it. But if brie is being shoved in my face against my wishes I'm not going to give it a chance. Everyone gets to discover cheese, and taste in bands, in their own time and how they wish. My love of cheese is in no way threatened as less knowledgeable if someone thinks it's myopic that I haven't sampled their roquefort.

It's not like we're all on this site praising Velveeta (Bieber for comparison) and pretending cheddar doesn't exist.

No one's forcing anything down anyone's throat, or sticking things in anyone's face(god, I HOPE not)..lol

Hell, Both Dave's and My Now Playing thread gets buried each time....just one outlet that we've tried to get people exposed to 'new' music...add in my playlists, which granted, are just words and not actual music or videos...but you COULD look them up. And my end of year Albums and songs of the year was an attempt at garnering some support for this genre of music....it turned out to be another thread where people added music that wasn't of this style....I've tried to make it so you really don't have to go looking for it....Hell, I even posted the HeavyHarmonies website...and like Melissa stated....there is always the FRONT PAGE. After all this is MELODICROCK DOT COM...Andrew even does the work for you....

In the end all I hear about is Foreigner this, Journey that....REO fucking Speedwagon....Styx - blah, blah, blah......U2....M5.....Bruce....Madonna....jeesh, give it a freakin' rest people....

The JETS were great (if you can get past the fact that the one girl sings with a lisp).
