(CNN) -- A 4-day-old died after being attacked by his family's pit bull terrier Sunday evening at his home in Jacksonville, Florida, according to John Harrell, a spokesman with the Florida's Department of Children and Family.

The infant's father told CNN affiliate WJXT he and the baby's mother only left the child alone for a few seconds when the attack occurred.

Jacksonville Sheriff's office along with Florida's child welfare agency are investigating the incident as a child death.

The state agency will determine if the child was unsupervised and for how long.

"Our investigation will reveal if the incident was abuse, neglect or an accident," said the DCF spokesman.

The state agency's report will show if the the dog had any history of aggression. The father told WJXT the dog had never shown aggression toward any member of the family. DCF reminded parents how dangerous it is for pets to be around small children.

"It's a very tragic case and our sympathy goes out to everyone who knew the child, " said Harrell.

The final report on the incident is expected to take weeks to complete.

WJXT reported the dog was euthanized.

The sad thing is that those people needed to get a license to have the dog, but not the baby. You need to take two tests to drive a car (written and behind the wheel), but none to be a parent. Too sad that this child was brought into the world with these two idiots as parents and was doomed from the start.

The sad thing is that these people lost a baby ...my heart is breaking for them!!
Do you know how many things I can now look back on and say ~ WOW, that was stupid!!
If they intended no harm, they are suffering. This could've happened w/almost any breed of dog
oh and cats ...cats too, cat lovers...

Uh, there's a big difference between a cat curling up to sleep accidentally suffocating and infant and a pit bull intentionally ripping one to shreds!!!

Maybe not, but 1 case should be prosecuted, the other shouldn't.
When my neighbor had a pit running loose in his yard, I carried the biggest butcher knife I had with me while taking my 3 year old to my vehicle. I woulda cut that dog's head off if it charged. People need to have some sense!

People do have to have some sense!! It's easy to say what you would've done after someone else made
a stupid, life~altering mistake ...hell, I wouldn't have taken my child to the car, I would've called animal control ...or moved!!
A baby is dead and it's sad ...I stand!!

ha ha ...seriously, I know RWF is an excellent father, from what I've read here ...there's
simply no denying that people just don't always think ahead every second of every day!!
If these parents intended no harm, prison is nothing compared to the pain they've
inflicted upon themselves ...and that child!!

I can stand a long time ...and in some big shoes, too!!

Oh, and the answer is no, I would not bring a baby home to a pit bull!!

 If I would have said, "I woulda cut that dog's balls off". Would it have made me Rev.JacksonFan?
