Classic Rock Awards 2010 - DSB

Postby MartyMoffatt » Thu Nov 11, 2010 11:04 pm

I was fortunate to be at the Classic Rock Awards in London last night, to see Journey awarded ‘Event of the Year’ after DSB made it back into the UK top ten singles chart. Neal was there in person to pick up the award, in front of rock legends such as Slash, Joe Elliott, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Ronnie Wood, Rick Nielson, Robin Zander, Geddy Lee, Alice Cooper (who hosted the event), Rick Wakeman, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and many others.

I spoke to Neal briefly earlier in the evening and he said he was really looking forward to the UK tour with Foreigner and Styx, in the much bigger venues.

Holy cow, Marty! What a guest list. That must have been so wonderful for Neal. You got pictures?

I was there primarily to photograph The Union, a band I'm working with (who incidentally won 'Best New Band' award), so I wasn't really supposed to photograph anybody else, certainly not in an official capacity anyway. However I did get some pics of several of the winners. Here's Neal collecting his award...

Glad to see Neal put back on some weight. He looks great. He looked way too thin during the NAMM show time period.

I wonder if Steve Perry was invited. Maybe he's still busy riding the trolley with little kids.

Here is a link to an interview done after the awards show. I get the impression Slash isn't a big fan of DSB.

I was there on a crew pass with The Union, a band I’ve been working with for the past year or so, doing a long term project to capture photos of everything they do (musically) since they formed. They were there as one of the nominees for an award (which they won – Best New Band) and also because they were one of the three bands scheduled to play on the stage during the evening (the others being Alter Bridge and Cheap Trick). That was obviously a great privilege for them and something that I definitely wanted to make sure we had pictures of.

As I had a crew pass I had pretty much all area access, but as I wasn’t a guest I couldn’t partake of the gourmet meal served to everybody else. There were probably 40-50 tables of 10 being served, all populated by rock stars and other people in the music business. It was fascinating scanning the room and seeing all these idols greeting and chatting with each other.

I basically hovered by the stage next to The Union’s table, snapping them when anybody interesting came by. I went and had a chat with Neal at his table, and there were quite a few other people (journalists, designers, PR people, musicians) who I knew there, so I didn’t get bored.

As each guest accepted their awards and left the stage, they were escorted off to the right of the stage, exactly where I happened to be located so they all came right past me. Robin Zander even ruffled my hair as he walked past me knelt on the floor taking pictures.

Earlier on all the more well known artists had to walk a red carpet past all the press. The Union were just in front of Neal so I was probably stood about 5 yards away when that interview (in the post above) took place.

It was a fascinating evening – the first time I’ve been to an event like that. What made it even better was that my all time favourite band – RUSH – were given a special Living Legends award, and Geddy Lee had flown in to collect the award in person. I got to meet him, albeit briefly, for the first time in over 30 years of following the band.

Apart from the Awards section, the evening was remarkable for the live performances as well – it was the first time they had included live performance slots. The Union played two songs. Obviously I am pretty familiar with their stuff now but it was nice to see it played in front of, and being appreciated by, their peers, many of whom had probably never heard of The Union before that night.

Alter Bridge also played two songs, on the second of which they were joined on stage by Slash, to great applause.

The evening was wrapped up by a set from Cheap Trick. Funnily enough I had been to their full show in Wolverhampton two nights earlier, but they are always great fun to watch and they sounded great. I don’t know how long they were on stage as I had to leave after about 4-5 songs to catch my last train home. So, unfortunately I didn't get to attend any after show activities. Maybe next time.

For Neal and Slash to have shared the stage as many times as they have (and almost be in a band together), you would think he would show a bit more respect. Especially when Neal has schooled his ass almost everytime they played together. :P

Have to agree. Slash is sloppy and Neal owns his ass in guitar playing. Neal is underrated.

I wish Neal wasn't such a dumbass and would have done something with Guitar Hero so he could, I don't know, actually get his name out there a little more.

I like Slash's playing. With that said, below is example 1 (the guitar fun starts at about 3:15)

If you've seen Neal live over the last few years, you would realize that his own playing has gotten sloppy. He just wants to shred, unlike the early days when he actually sounded musical.

That's just not true. I can think of plenty of examples where Neal still sounds quite musical. Sloppy? I'd call it spontaneous. I'll take that "slop" any day. :D

I'm surprised that you can hear anything, the way you've got your head buried so far up in the band's ass.

As for myself, the only musical anus that I've got my own cranium crammed into is Celtic Woman, AND I LIKE IT!

Wow dude, you just can't let an opportunity go by can you? Did Neal like have his way with one of your family members and then dump them cold or something?

I would say for a high school drop out Neal has done extremely well for himself. I appears Neal does pretty well as far as knowledge of new technology goes, at least as it applies to music.

But hey, keep having your fun. The inmates are running the ward around here these days anyway.

Why, because many people have seen the complete douchery of Neal Schon, and choose not to kiss his ass?

Huh? The shit I say is nothing compared to what has been uttered on this board over the years. Why are you acting surprised all of a sudden?
It's not an offical bandsite. Anywway, where are you around here when Perry is the one in the line of fire?
Some people make it their mission to burn SP on the cross around here, I'm just balancing things out.

I notice, you're still reading what is being written here. As long as it's not your guy getting hosed, you probably enjoy it too.

You mean like people that criss-cross the country, drink with the guy, exchange phone numbers and accept stacks of backstage passes from the band he founded?
