I finally rented Avatar and watched it at home without the 3d glasses unfortunately, sorry but I hated it.
Why did people rave about this movie?

It was the best of all the Hollywood POS's at the time.
3D made the movie.

I tried really hard to watch it because of all the rave reviews it got and I couldn't make it past about a half an hour.

I have to admit the 3D experience made it kind of fun for me in the theater.

But now everything is 3-D....a 3-D movie in my area costs 14.75 - adult.

I never give back my glasses...and I tried to get away with complaining about the price saying that I have my own glasses....it didn't fly. For some reason the price is fixed, the manager explained that a 3-D movie costs more to make.... :?

Hey, the ultra HD recording of Journey's Manila DVD cost more to make too and look where that got us. 8)

some very good effects, and good directing by James Cameron--who is one of the best directors out there. Other than pushing CGI to new boundaries, nothing terribly original, but generally well done for a fantasy action flick. Certainly doesn't compare to some of the best examples of the genre (and not on the level of Cameron at his best--more mid-level Cameron really), but very watchable if you like his films. Just a fun popcorn action movie with a bit of sci-fi thrown in.

3-D personally did little for me, even though it was done well. I think the movie actually looks better in 2D on Blu-Ray if you have a good tv. Filming in 3D gives more depth of field than I have ever seen (especially on the non-CGI scenes), but little interest in seeing the real 3D version again.

I love Avatar. I just bought a new 3-D t.v. a couple of weeks ago and to me, the picture looks even better than when I saw it in 3-D in the theater! I think it's an amazing movie, but to each their own.

I loved it too Jim! AMAZING graphics and I even liked the storyline. I thought it had a great message. My whole family loved it. Didn't see it 3D though. I'm not a 3D fan. We missed out at the theaters, so I only saw it in widescreen.

youre missing out dude.... the storyline is pretty cool , but the special effects and the colors are just amazing. Even without the 3D its something you can use to benchmark a TV's color quality.

You wanna make a shithouse of cash in 2011??? Short Netflix (the stock). It's at $190 today. Let's see what it's at in about a year or so. I say under $100.

I didn't necc hate it, liked the digital effects and the CGI obviously, but other than that, I thought the entire movie was atleast an hour and half WAY to long and was very, very overrated for my taste.

Netflix is just gonna go up and up in stocks , they have found the keys to movie and movie rentals, putting most other places out of business. With their new $7.99/month for unlimited streaming, theyre untouchable. Lets get back to this topic in a year and see if its $100 ot $250 ;)

I agree, I've only seen the movie once in IMAX 3D, and haven't even attempted to see it any other way since, it's just one of those movies you have to see on a big screen in 3D.

haha. Nah, Ferngully holds a special place for me. First movie I took my daughter to. Just she and I. She was about 3. So it's sacred. Not to mention, they just made WAY too much of Avatar. It didn't suck and the 3D was very cool- BUT, it just wasn't very original and I don't think it's the best movie of all time. Everyone knows that's "Yellow Submarine"!! ;)

Just curious because I haven't been to the theater in ages, but do they have crying rooms now, where moms take the kids/babies when they act up? We had them in the base theaters overseas, a room with sound proof glass up above the regular seats with a huge viewing window and sound piped in so Mom could still enjoy the movie without disturbing the other patrons.
