Made some big decisions today...

I'm going back to school!!! I've really been in a slump for the last few months (probably all Andrew's fault! ), and I decided that I need to do more with my life. I have served in the Army and the Army National Guard for a total of over 19 years. I only have about 15 years of active duty service, and I should be able to stay in for another 7-9 years depending on my rank until I reach 22-24 years of service.

With that said, I have NO clue what I'm going to do when I retire! I've really been down for a few weeks, and just feel like I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing with my life (at this point). After thinking long and hard about it, I've decided to go back to school and finish my Associates. I'm going to be taking some online classes, and I'll see where it takes me. I'm nervous AND excited! I'm sure I won't be on here as much once my classes start, but I'm sure you'll be fine without me. Just thought I'd share the news.

I'd bet you could pick that up in a hurry as interested in music as you are. I'm guessing it would be akin to learning to read another language. But the more I think about it, I'm not sure the job market for music teachers is that great. It seems like schools aren't embracing the arts as much as they use to. Might be why music sucks so bad in this day and age.

YET I've always thought it is so ridiculous that people have to make their career choice for life at the age of 18 to 21. Who knows what they want at that age?? I'd say there are probably MANY people in their 30's doing what you are. Good for you! And good luck!

You don't really make a career choice in college if that's what you're getting at, save technical majors like Engineering, Nursing, Law, and Accounting. And even for law/medicine, lots of kids still can (and do) change their minds halfway through college before committing to the long haul.

Also, what would you have people do, flip burgers for $6/hr until they are 25 or 30, finally decide they want to grow up and figure out what they want to do, and commit themselves to something?

Lynn, I get where you're coming from here, but take this from me (a younger person), there is already a staggering amount of immaturity and lack of responsibility among my generation for their future. No need to encourage it further. When it comes to young college-age or recently graduated people complaining about "not knowing what they want to do with themselves," it's usually just them not wanting to accept responsibility and face the music: It's time to get up every morning, do the 9-5, and generally be an "adult." It rarely has anything to do with the actual jobs they are doing.

i went back in my early 30s -with 4 kids at home. i had a life long history of music playing, reading, teaching and majoring in music ed almost killed me. :-/ i did go back to teaching public school but the time restraints turned out to be prohibitive--not enough time for grandbabies!! besides, there r lots of things to do in the music field aside from teaching.

I am well on my way now to building a music academy--one student at a time!!! arggg. i am opening my own publishing company in order to publish my own arrangements and others after that. There is more but I'll spare you....

Life begins at 50 so get a running start! I wish I had started earlier but oh well. our favorite THP sez, march forward, don't look back.
