G.I.Jim wrote::lol: Thanks everyone. I have NO idea what direction I want to go in yet, but I'm meeting with our education coordinator on Wednesday to get more info. I'm going to knock out the basics first, then just go from there. My education is free, so I really NEED to take advantage of it after all of these years.

Want some stone cold hard advice? If your education is free, don't fuck around with online classes. That is garbage. Go to school, do it right. Online school is fake as shit.

Go to school for four hours a night using your G.I. Bill and you will be pocketing over $500 a month easily after expenses.

Or, he could become a therapist's couch and have people like Tila Tequila and Lindsay Lohan lay on him regularly. :)

I'm going to sit down with the counselors and look at all of my options. The problem with going to school, is that I don't work set hours like most people. I set my own schedule daily, but I have to work around other people's schedules. If they can't meet until the evening... that's when I meet them. Same goes for weekends. I'm at their mercy to some extent. Comes with the job, and that's what has made it so hard for me to go to school in the past. I know a lot of recruiters who do the online thing, and it's working out fine with them.

And Yulog, If I quit talking about my life and problems, you wouldn't have anything to keep yourself busy with. Well other than look through all of your love letters from Phyllis! :P

Yes, you have a "real" degree, right?? I have a "fake online" degree....I make a very comfortable living doing what I love....remind me again, what is it you do? I mean besides post on here all day long-cuz I know that sure doesn't pay the bills....

But seriously Jimbo...online education has come a long way! The program I completed has actually been rated among the top graduate programs in the country. With advances in technology, even traditional classroom classes are "online." I took many classes where the professor was in another city but gave the lecture via teleconference or posted class materials, assignments and tests online for students to access them. So what's the difference if you sit in a classroom and watch a lecture or sit in your jammies at home and watch the same lecture? The faculty is usually always available too-even MORE so with online than traditional classes-for many of the same reasons you mentioned. Their schedule is very flexible so they can arrange phone calls or online conferences with students at any time. I was very pleased with the education I got from my online experience.

Best of luck to you and keep us posted on what you decide! (you know, men CAN be midwives too! )

I think online classes would be a great way to go too, because once you're not that little college age of 18-22 and non-responsible anymore, lol, it's not so easy to GO to classes on some campus. I mean really, to quote Kevin Bacon in one of his lesser known movies... "College is high school with ash trays." SO true! So if you decide to go the online route, I don't see anything wrong with that at all. 8)

Do the Clep tests and Dantes if you can for some credits. For the rest, go to a real classroom. Even if it's not full time and just the weekends, you will still be able to pocket at least 200 from your GI Bill each month. It will be like the Government paying your car note because you are going to class.

G.I.Jim wrote:I'm going back to school!!!  I've really been in a slump for the last few months (probably all Andrew's fault!), and I decided that I need to do more with my life. I have served in the Army and the Army National Guard for a total of over 19 years. I only have about 15 years of active duty service, and I should be able to stay in for another 7-9 years depending on my rank until I reach 22-24 years of service.

With that said, I have NO clue what I'm going to do when I retire! I've really been down for a few weeks, and just feel like I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing with my life (at this point). After thinking long and hard about it, I've decided to go back to school and finish my Associates. I'm going to be taking some online classes, and I'll see where it takes me. I'm nervous AND excited! I'm sure I won't be on here as much once my classes start, but I'm sure you'll be fine without me. Just thought I'd share the news.

Good Luck! I am sure you will enjoy getting into school again. What is your Associates going to be in? :)
