Turn Down The World Tonight

Postby Don » Sat Dec 11, 2010 10:10 am

From what I know of the industry, it's not the artist who decides what is released as a single but the label/management. Is the case with not releasing TDTWT because it DOESN'T sound like it is cut from the normal Journey template?
If that is indeed why it didn't make it on the radio, I guess that gives Neal one more reason to hate Perry. Being pigeonholed into having to maintain a certain sound that is not allowed to be deviated from has to be the worse thing that can happen to any artist.

So, are you asking us if Journey is our favorite band, and if not, name our top five bands ...again?!?

No, I am being a Journey fan named Charlie Brown. I am looking at every situation and presenting it in a worse case scenario.

I am the Eeeyore of rock.

To get this gem on the charts, Lady Antebellum needs to do it proper.

It at least takes a chance, which most of the ballads do not. I'm rather ambivalent, preferring more uptempo material, but it's not bad for what it is.

Haha...this is the only song I really like from the AP-fronted album.
Different??? I thought it quite followed the Journey sound...maybe I need to go listen to it again  .

It's not the best song on "Revelation" but it's a pretty good tune.

It's a ballad with a bit of a moody feel to it.

Deano would like it if he was still sucking Schon

I liked the song at first, haven't listened to it in a long time though. I definitely don't see how it departs from the Journey sound much, if at all. Explain Don.

To me, this is the only Journey song, I have heard where Arnel doesn't sound like he's imitating Perry. It's a song , where if you hear it without knowing the artist, the Journey connection doesn't instantly happen. Maybe Survivor, but for me, not Journey.

I thought the melody was as good as has ever been done on a Journey ballad and that it definitely deviates from the standard song structure they usually go with.

I see... so it's the vocals for you that distinguishes it? Structurally/instrumentally though, I don't see how it's not Journey. You have piano, voice, and drums in the intro, followed by sporadic Neal leads (with his signature licks too) to accent the verse vocals, a big chorus with harmony vocals, a bridge, and then a big melodic delay-soaked solo.

To me the vocals are what sell a song to mangement if it gets on the radio. If it sounds like Steve Perry, even a little, it passes the radio test.

For a legacy act to be on Adult Contemporary Radio there has to be a simple A TO B for the casual fan to grasp. For Journey, it's always been the voice as compared to the actual music.

Wow, really? Not one song on Revelation Disk One sounds like he's imitating Perry, to me. I don't hear any of those Perryisms I hear that Jeremey can do and Deen can do even when singing classics. I hear Arnel keep his vocals up in the tenor range (albeit a little huskier) and sing a Journey belting out type song, but that's about it. In fact, when I listen to Revelation Disk One it is so clear to me when doing music not originated with Perry how he doesn't sound like Perry at all except he's a tenor.

Here's Turn Down The World Tonight Live Manila DVD - So beautiful. Love everything about this song Meaningful lyrics, beautiful vocals by Arnel, Neal's guitar, stunning piano intro and piano melody throughout. Just a beautiful melody to this song Deeno's backing vocals and drums in this song. Jon wrote a beautiful song and great musicians brought it to life

I have to admit, After All These Years was one of my least favorites on Revelation, and I have come to really love that song. Some of Arnel's best vocals on Revelation. And love Neal on this song.

Live Manila - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XJp49fYzeQ

But though not my favorite on the actual album, this extended version of What I Needed live is still what I love most off Revelation live with Neal's just amazing added solo and I just love the sheer power of Arnel's vocals on this live.

Jana, I spent the afternoon driving my wife to Spokane to leave for California so she could spend the holidays with our kids. I got home a bit ago and after drinking a couple glasses of wine I clicked your links. I absolutely feel it! Thank you. :D

What I needed is fantastic here! How can people diss that?

Agreed. I really like this song. Live...there's some loss in clarity of sound than the recorded version...but a great song is still a great song.
Have always maintained I like this AP-sung Journey song a lot.
And HP and BTC are my fav SA-sung songs.

Three things:

1. With the clip is he not only trying to capture his inner Perry vocally, but also his inner Augeri with the pants  Also after watching some other clips from the Live at Minilla dvd I've come to the conclusion Arnie kinda sounds like a chipmunk when he sings Perry songs.
2. God this song bores me. Hell the entire album bores the fuck out of me. The only songs that stand out for me on Revelation are "Never Walk Away", "Change For The Better", and "After All These Years". The rest of the albums bores me. I would say Faith In the Heartland, but a much better version of that was released on Generations.
