Colleges are retarded - they sit there and tell you "It doesn't matter what you major in." That's a mere truism from the past. Today, too many jobs, even entry level jobs, require or highly encourage some kind of special, technical training. I majored in Poli Sci, which is equally useless, but I also knew I was going on to graduate school 100%. You just can't sit there and major in something like History or Poli Sci and expect to get a decent entry level job coming out anymore, especially since the economy shit the bed. Colleges need to stop encouraging students to major in "whatever they want to." All my friends that majored in stuff like me that didn't go on to a higher degree are stuck in dead end, horrendous sales jobs making $20K a year after forking out a good chunk of change for school. Not worth it.

To work in a business post-undergrad and have a decent start, you really need to have something to offer - accounting, finance, maybe even marketing. For the most part, liberal arts degrees just don't cut it today if you want to be in business.

This is exactly what I tried telling my girls ...the eldest
majored in Psychology, Sociology and Poli Sci ... she now works in the legal dept. of one of the oldest local family owned businesses.
She was very fortunate ...but to defy me, I don't get it?! :?

Engineering degrees too. They had better start encouraging people to go out and get some experience too. That is part of my problem, I have the degree but no relevant experience in anything. I had to take a freshman introduction type of class where I'm at now and the instructor said: "Experience means nothing, its your degree that counts." I almost fell out my chair laughing when she said that. Every company I interviewed with turned me down because of my lack of experience, hence the factory job.

I tease people, and usually most of the time, I like them if I'm teasing them  Unless of course they disagree with me on something. Well, the experience factor is another animal - now that things seem to be bouncing back a TINY bit, the companies are going to do a lot more lateral hiring for the folks who got laid off at the height of shit. When you can get an accountant, engineer, lawyer etc who has 2-3 years of experience and pay them marginally more than you'd pay a green fresh-out-of school grad, it's a no brainer when companies are looking to maximize the bang for their buck. It's kinda hard to get experience when you can't get your foot in the door. It's going to be a real problem for a while for people from this generation.

Ain't that the truth! The thought of running up another $20,000 in student loan debt scares the hell out of me but it either that or spending my career in a low paying factory. It's a double edged sword for a lot of us, settle for a crappy dead end job or bury ourselves in debt.

With a history degree - did you ever consider pursuing law school maybe? It's no guarantee, especially in this market, but still...

I'm hoping that with a Paralegal degree I can get in with a bigger law firm who has an education assistance type of benefit and they could pay for it.

I almost fell out my chair laughing when she said that. Every company I interviewed with turned me down because of my lack of experience, hence the factory job.

Not a bad plan.

While I agree w/Matty, wholeheartedly, on the hardships of your generation, there are a lot of
other ways to gain experience, thus getting your foot in the door. The economy is a huge factor,
yes, but unfortunately, some of the people of your generation have made things difficult for
themselves.
When I was in college I worked every summer, Dairy Queen, Arby's, KFC and finally, my senior
year, I got a cushy job as a sales clerk in a dept. store...I also walked to school barefoot in the snow, ha ha!!
As menial as these jobs may seem, I gained major insight and know~how,
which carried me onto my next endeavor. What about charitable work and coaching?!?
Although, they may pay nothing, the work is very rewarding and it looks so awesome on a resume.
When I look at a resume, I want to see that the person I'm hiring, if not yet fully experienced,
is not afraid of hard work, is willing to do whatever to learn the position
and one who thinks beyond themselves. I'd be willing to work w/a person such as this ...
The degree, from Penn State, would impress me, however!!

The other thing you have to do is just try to ignore the bad shit that happens in the job hunt/career search. Some of my buddies have gotten so negative about everything after some rough experiences that I can guarantee that negativity comes across in interviews, even if subconsciously.

I gotta say, I'm so thankful that I was an athlete. It definitely helped me to have collegiate athletic experience and leadership experience like that on my resume on top of good grades. Also, my music tastes definitely helped me connect with some people I interviewed with - something I definitely had going over most other people interviewing at my age  . Tack on the fact that I play guitar and have a small guitar collection to talk about, and I had some nice ways to be remembered as more than just another young guy in a suit and tie when I walked out of the interview.

This?

For decade after decade the working people have taken care of the lazy. I think anyone getting an unemployment check, and especially welfare, should have to report and do some sort of work. Clean up garbage in cities and on the sides of the road, shovel snow, remove graffiti and similar sorts of jobs. This country should be fucking spotless. No one should get money for free. I have never collected any sort of unemployment or welfare in my life and I (hopefully) never will. I would work at McDonalds first. Hell, within 2 or 3 years (or less) I'm quite sure I'd be in some sort of management. :) Fantastic corporation.

I love the sentiment, but they really should be out securing a job and paying taxes, which will pay for city workers to do the cleaning up.
