Two of my all time favorite albums right there. Hard to match that kind of music and inspiration. Some of the '90s were just as good as the '80s.

Nice. "Brigade" is my favorite Heart album. Love it from top to bottom (even the much maligned "All I Want To Do....").

And "Ah Via Musicom" is just superb. Eric at his best.

I was just thinking this yesterday...I like it better than the s/t album that did far better in the charts.

"Brigade" is one of the fewest rock albums that I know that has NO fillers or "twins" ( like most of the Nickelback songs are, for example lol). Just like you said - perfection from top to bottom.
And Eric...on that album he set the bar so high that even he will have a problem with it.

Again, not to harp on your music. Honestly. But those are the mainstream, popular bands. The Alias is the only obscure one on that list....

So? What are you, a music snob? LOL That a mainstream band you can't own their music and their music can't be great? You go the exact opposite way and REFUSE to list mainstream bands. Why does obscure make it better?

Everyone knows "Cliffs of Dover" from that album and it's a great song but it sounds like crap compared to the live version from the "Live in Austin" DVD. There's so much more life in that version that it's not even funny.

It's funny that I was listening to U2's "The Joshua Tree" just a couple days ago and thinking exactly about what Jim said when he opened this thread.
That's another album that will have an everlasting freshness and perfection regardless how many years will pass. And to think that in 1988 when I first heard it I didn't like it at all...Someone told me "try to play it one more time" and it happened: I couldn't stop spinning it.

That's such a great album too.

But there's something about "Brigade" for me. It has a nice selection of hits and just some great album tracks (love stuff like "The Night," "Under The Sky" and "I Love You"). The band was firing on all cylinders -- Howard Leese played some wonderful guitar throughout. And Ann, of course, is at the top of her game throughout.

By this point, my crush on Nancy Wilson was pretty much in full effect as well, and it was sealed when I saw the video for "Stranded." It's still one of my favorite Nancy Wilson-sung songs.

Agreed...I'm not a huge U2 fan but that album definitely hasn't aged. On the other hand while I really like "Hysteria" by Def Leppard, it sounds pretty dated today, in my opinion.

The only song I really don't like is "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You" and I know the Wilson sisters don't care much for it, either. Yuck. Great singing by Ann, of course, but the subject matter just makes want to puke.

I saw the Austin version and I agree. I was talking more about the overall creativity of the album.
I believe that sometimes artists/bands shoot themselves in the foot with a masterpiece of an album because from that peak point it's either "top that" or "the only way is down". Usually it's the latter.

You bet!

Indeed. I love Eric's guitar playing, but I think his vocals are at a high level on "Ah Via Musicom" too. He sounds fantastic on songs like "Desert Rose," "High Landrons" and "Forty Mile Town" (a favorite of mine).

Outside of "Cliffs" being amazing, I remember hearing "Trademark" in 1990 and my jaw hitting the floor. It just contains some of the most perfect and emotive guitar playing, and I think to this day it represents a nice snapshot of Eric's mixed bag of tones (pristine crystal clear tones to violin-like leads).

I love all of Eric's albums, but AVH definitely has that something special throughout.

Hehe, I know exactly what you mean. Call it the "it" factor. For some reason, some albums have that "something" going on and no matter how hard they try to repeat the feeling with the next album, they don't succeed.
Journey's "Escape" comes to mind...The unmatchable peak of the band. ( I really hope this thread will not get locked now that I said the "J" word...lmao)

I was ten to 19 years old from 1981 to 1989. I don't remember many of those songs in that list. My list during that time period was:

Prince (Sign O The Times)
Van Halen (0U812)
Tears For Fears (Songs From The Big Chair, Seeds Of Love)
George Michael (Faith, Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1)
Terrence Trent D'Arby (Hardline, Niether Fish Nor Flesh)
INXS (Kick, X)
Judas Priest (Screaming, Defenders, Turbo)
King Diamond (Abigail)

Maybe a few others. But I obviously wasn't committed to one genre. Notice the lack of Journey in that list, LOL....

"Hysteria" by Def Leppard, it sounds pretty dated

I disagree. This is a album you go on "road trips" with. U2, wouldn't see em if they were across the street. To political of a band and Bono, to put it mildly, is an
overrated singer and complete prick!
