In 1996 (after 2 miscarriages and 2 preterm deliverers that ended in death) I was pregnant again and in the hospital at 21 weeks pregnant. I was starting to dilate despite having a stitch in my cervix.
At that time, I was very involved with a Moms usenet group that I joined when I was pregnant with my 2nd preterm in 1995. We all were due around the same time in 1995 Even though they now were raising their babies I remained a part of this group. When I ended up in the hospital and was told I would be there for the duration of my pregnancy this group was wonderful to me. I received many many cards, small gifts, emails and phone calls. The support was overwhelming.
While in the hospital I had a private room so my husband could stay with me. (he slept at the hospital every night) I was able to keep in touch with the group through phone calls with other members. They would post updates for me. One thing that was discussed was the private room issue and how I hoped I would be able to get the hospital to accept insurance only. Unknown to me the moms started a collection to help defray the out of pocket I would have to pay for the private room.
After 4 weeks in the hospital I went into labor and my daughter was born at 25 weeks gestation. She died 12 hours later. The hospital did take insurance only on the room but this group sent me the money anyway. It was around $350. I was told to use the money anyway I wanted. I used it to pay the funeral cost. It was so much stress off of our back not having to try and come up with the money for her funeral.
After my daughter's death I began to receive cards and letters from all over the world. How wonderful it was to know that, in my daughter's short life, she touched so many people. I still have every one of those cards and letters.
To add a happy note to this post....in 1997, I carried my 6th pregnancy to term and had a beautiful healthy baby boy...who is now a healthy, 5'7", 160lb, handsome, 13 year old young man
