My point was that with all of the Journey tribute singers I've seen, they all seem to capture different tones that Perry had. I just thought Augeri and or Hugo captured that soft tone Perry had, better than someone like Arnel or Kelty. Kelty/Hunsicker capture the nasal tone/high tones of Perrys voice much more authentically than Arnel who has all the power and a mixture of high and low end tones. Hunsicker is the closest I've seen come to that raspy voice. Technically, it is the worst stage for Perry as far as singing goes. (Ftlosm & TBF) (Maybe he couldn't help it? or he was trying to be soulful and emotive?) Ironically happens to be the voice that is hardest to capture from tribute singers.
Just making an observation.

In some way Journey became a prisoner of their own success...fans and casual concert visitors just want to hear the greatest hits.
If people say Journey became a nostalgia act when they hired Pineda..than I would say no... because that already happened long before he was hired!

Steve Perry was "The Voice" of Journey, people created an emotional bond with the man and his voice...for those fans no one will ever replace him.
But for those who haven`t created that bond and who just care for the music everything is different.
So for them it`s karaoke time baby

And, those who equate Perry = Journey only appreciate 1/5 of what Journey really was.

Prior to Arnel, Journey constantly said how they were moving FORWARD. Read the interview on this very site where Neal talks about hiring Hugo and that it was just weird how not only sounded like Perry...but looked like him too...and they never seriously considered him. When they hired Arnel, all they could say is how they were looking back and trying to recapture this and that. THAT is the difference.

Al in my opinion of course
Fair enough.. sort of... but surely ESCAPE is more karaoke then Journey?! As is any covers/tribute band. Aslong as Cain is there and - more importantly - Neal is playing guitar then its a lot more Journey than any tribute act
Agreed. Even if they had no lead singer and were using Deen exclusively, it would still be more Journey than Escape.
"I rather go see a tribute band" is like saying "I like my coffee with cream and sugar but when I can`t get it that way I settle for surogat coffee as long if there is cream and sugar in it....but hey! the main ingredient in coffee is coffee not sugar and cream!
Sure, back in Journey`s heyday Perry was the sugar and cream in Journey`s coffee (oh shit that sounds gay![]()
), I believe Pineda today has some ingredients to spice up Journey`s coffee again, but I can`t blame anyone who says "Pineda is not my cup of tea"

Liquid_Drummer wrote:Journey came to Louisville last tour and I passed. One of my all time favorite bands and I had ZERO interest in seeing them phone in another episode of the the Dirty Dozen . Had Escape been in town I would have been there. It is simple. I love Neal Schon's playing but dont forget that Smitty was a big part of that groove and he gets way too little credit for the feel. Best song on ROR IMHO ? WCTNGOF. Drummer ? Steve Smith. He only played on two tracks if I am not mistaken and they are the best on the cd. Its called musical chemistry. Accidental magic is what I call it.
Escape to me is a more raw enjoyable experience and it always felt right. The new Journey doesnt feel right and I am speaking from a musical perspective. I feel like with the exception of Neal, Deen and Ross that the rest of the band just phone it in. Cain looks like he would rather be sitting on the shitter half the time than playing and Arnel on the old stuff. Sorry. FORCED emotion and even though Deen is a killer drummer I think he is too damn metal. The feel and lilt just aint quite right to me. Steve Smith didnt mash the drums to oblivion and look how that sounded. Too metal feeling where it doesnt belong. Nothing against metal of course and I love Deens playing on the latest cd. I just dont dig these guys on the old stuff. They are being themselves live and thats great. Dont like the treatment the old songs are getting. Neal changed the way he chords Wheel in the sky now during the verse parts. Listen. If you could hear if by it self it would sound like Tool. Its almost the same riff as the song Sober just faster ?!?!?? WTF ? Improvising I can understand but he now plays it this way to make it sound more modern. Fuck that.
Thats how it comes off to me. Forced... 1/100th of the people at an Escape show WAY cheaper and it sounds more like Journey than Journey does today. Not a fan of Arnel on the old stuff. Love him on the new stuff and look forward to the new cd and if they mention that he used to be poor one more fucking time... They milked that story and squeezed every penny out of it. It was obvious and I dont like that. Arnel however... Helping kids, setting up charities. Good on him and who can blame him for taking the job...

Let me extend that equation.
Perry was 1/5 of Journey but he brought 4/5 of the fans to journey.
Today that equation is balanced out again because Pineda brings in about 4/5 of the new fans.
So Journey`s equilibrium is just in time restored to make the perfect Hindi album.![]()

his 4/5 of new fans don't even come close to Perry's 4/5 ...not that it matters because it's stupid, but if you're going

Actually it's the Journey/Perry success that keeps the fans willing to even attend ...except
the Pinheads...which as some say here, amount to very little, right?!?!
It ain't the Revelation/Hindi stuff they are showing up to hear or they'd be playing more of it

The new fans show up to hear the OLD hits!!

Whatever the mix is of people who visit a Journey concert, most of them know that Perry is no longer the singer but I agree their classic songs with Perry are the main course..it would be unthinkable and cause a riot if they didn`t had them on the setlist.![]()

"Let me extend that equation."
Let us say the Sopranos with "DSB," his aping Perry on "The Greatest Hits," Glee and X-Factor bring in 4/5 of the new fans. Let Pineda take the stage with Revelation disc 1 and let us see how many coffee shops they will fill...
I believe it was said that "it is much easier to drive on a road than it is to pave one." So don't even attempt to "equilibrium" the two.

It's also not Deen's, or Arnel's.
The problem, however, if it doesn't matter to the person who goes to see the concert. To them, the memories and nostalgia are THEIRS and if they choice to reminisce with a tribute band and not Journey, well, there is really not much of an argument you can make against it. [/img]

Almost every eighties band is a nostalgia act ..imagine Styx or Foreigner not performing their greatest hits..its not done!
I agree, the memories of the fans are theirs and they decide what they want to hear and want to see...no problem with that.
My decision is that I still prefer the current line up who still delivers new music....some good hindi music I may hope.

Hey Jeremey,
A big kudos to you for writing(or co-writing?) "Never Walk Away" but the point of discussion were the classic songs with Perry and who wrote them and why those guys who co-wrote them are still Journey etc.
And sorry "Never Walk Away" isn`t a classic yet.(for me it is but not for those Pinepeckers)
I know you have "Never Walk Away" in your setlist but I don`t know if any of the other tribute bands have post Perry songs in their setlist, if so,it would be a validation of my point.
