That was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles.

youre both right ;) While "Video Killed.." was the very first MTV video , "Money for nothing" was also the very first MTV video in Europe! ;)

Was it really? I had no idea! So Europe had no MTV until THEN?

Yes,,, they had the US MTV . But eventually MTV decided to create MTV Europe, 1986/87,,, and when that launched the very first video was "Money for nothing"

Interesting fact! So you got TWO MTV's to watch?

nope, cause once they started MTV Europe, it replaced MTV US ! 8)

Oh wow! So before that, there was a lot of US influence in music then? Or was MTV not thriving with the US version , being the European music scene was slightly different in the 80's? Is that why they needed a Euro version maybe?

Probably  It's interesting though! If you think about it, that word is RARELY used anymore! Is it a "time era" thing or is it a political correctness thing? Hmm..

I was watching Beverly Hills Cop yesterday and I was amazed at how a rated R movie at that time, WITH shooting, had no blood and guts!! When he shot people, there was no blood! They just fell down!! Funny how the violent movies aren't offensive to anyone, but yet "faggot" is a sin!

Oh yeah I would bet it's a PC thing now  It is so amazing how different movies are now compared to then! I love Beverly Hills Cop

This is being done under existing laws that have been on the books in Canada for years. There've been radio broadcasters who've lost their licenses there saying things considered to be anti-gay. It's nothing new.

Anyway, the idiots probably aren't aware that the song was written after Knopfler (I believe) overheard a couple of guys talking about rock stars being "faggots", etc. Morons.

Here is what Knofler said in the article.

"Mr. Knopfler has said he wrote the song impromptu after overhearing some workers at an appliance shop, more or less saying what the song does, and using some of the same language.

"I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real," he said in 1985. "

And there you have it from the man himself. Back then someone could of said something if they didn't like it. 25 years later is ludicrous! And now someone messing with Huck Finn? Get a grip, people! That book shows the time and the way people spoke back when it was first published! I say if you don't like a song or a book, don't listen/read it! Messing with old/historical stuff is a no no... Leave it be!

While I think banning the song is ridiculous, I have never liked hearing "Faggot" in the song. I thought it was a pretty lame lyric and of course a crappy term to throw around. I feel the same way about Bitch. I like it in the Stones song "love, it's a bitch". That's different than "cold hearted bitch", "crazy bitch" whatever. I think they're both crappy terms to be in mainstream radio tunes.
Anyway, other than the guitar solo in "Sultans of Swing" I've always hated Dire Straits. The "Walk of Life" has got to be THE lamest song in the world. Ugh....

I don't know. I think bitch is kind of an empowering term in some cases

Here is another tidbit of stupid from the people who banned the song...

"The reference to "chicks for free" and a later line about "banging on bongos like a chimpanzee" also has caused criticism of the song as sexist and racist."

Isn't that one of the reasons why guys start bands? One of the perks of being in a successful band is getting "Chicks for Free". How is that sexist? IT IS what happens with successful bands. Women and girls literally GIVE themselves to the guys. Not all mind you, just the groupies.. surely these idiots know this?

And "Banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee".. For the love of Mike! Haven't they seen a live, furry chimpanzee (the animal) bang on bongos? Shite. Chimpanzees just bang the hell out of them! If these people gave the word "Chimpanzee" another meaning all together, that is their fucking problem! I don't see any problems with any of these lyrics..

Who knows  I don't like that song even in the least bit, if I never heard it again it would be too soon
Because it was a rip on your hair bands? Really, that's why I don't get why it's so offensive. They are calling the hair bands rich fags basically. I liked it because I took the humor from it. And I was an MTV freak back then. It was very MTV driven. It's a nostalgia thing.

It was the very first video played on MTV wasn't it?
At the end they sing "I want my MTV". I always took that as kind of a dig at us viewers too! Being glued to our MTV. MTV zombies  We made all those "faggots" wealthy

Actually, it was a dig at censors. Not too long after the launch, there was organized pressure on cable stations to drop MTV because it was too racy and damaging to America's impressionable youth. Some cable companies, esp. in the usual suspect places, did drop it for a while. MTV's response was a series of promos featuring the slogan "I want my MTV."

I remember seeing clips of him testifying before Congress. He didn't come off too well in that situation, in my opinion. On the other hand, Frank Zappa also testified and he was very well-spoken.

Yeah, I kind of felt that way at first. My daughter was watching it, so I watched a few to see what she was seeing. In some cases, it does kind of promote it. But really, it shows how crappy their lives are. Single, living with boyfriends, some not even the dad's of their babies. No college. Minimum wage work. It does show the realities of it too. They use girls from different walks of life too. My daughter was horrified by it more than impressed, so I was happy about that. I do think all of that is kind of exploiting though. They aren't even "of age" and they are on this show. We see adults in reality tv end up with ruined lives. I'd think this can't be a positive thing.

The entire song was satire. The term fit right in. I could picture two old dudes saying it. I wouldn't go up to a gay guy and call him a faggot or refer to him as one, but it fits in the song.

People need to lighten up. It's like we now have to find something to be offended by.

What the hell is society becoming? We are teaching kids to BE fucking offended. How about we teach kids to be polite...but get over it if someone says something perceived as inappropriate. We've turned into a bunch of winey, assed bitches. Yes...I said bitches.

Now, if someone puts a unflattering reference to a balding, overweight, middle aged white guy of Northern Europe descent in a song, I'm gonna be offended...Damn it. Ban that fucker. :x

It's all the Westboro Cult's fault as they are forcing the pendulum to swing way, far away from their preaching.

You got nothing Jacket. I was against Tipper too. Look, the radio stations even here in LA bleep out the words in certain songs. How about Big ol Jet Airliner by Steve miller? The line that says "funky shit goin down in the city?" That's always banned....Who cares? it's one word here and there? Big deal. Move on and shut up about it already.

MCE, I have always been against censorship of any kind.

That doesn't need censorship. It need destruction. So you think child porn would be "ok" as long as private parts are blacked out ?! :?

You got nothing Jacket. I was against Tipper too. Look, the radio stations even here in LA bleep out the words in certain songs. How about Big ol Jet Airliner by Steve miller? The line that says "funky shit goin down in the city?" That's always banned....Who cares? it's one word here and there? Big deal. Move on and shut up about it already.

MCE, I have always been against censorship of any kind.

What about child porn?

I'm sure he means censorship of things that are LEGAL. It's legal to use the word "faggot". It's NOT legal to have or make child porn. They are two different things.
