Fantastic Pro Shot Frontiers Video!!

Postby Jeremey » Tue Jan 18, 2011 12:16 pm

Reading CinnKid's comments reminded me that there are SO MANY video clips out there of me singing Journey songs, some dating 7-8 years ago! Considering the change in Perry's voice that took place over that same time period, and the immense amount of changes that took place in his voice, it just reminded me, there's probably people out there that click on one video of me singing from say, 2004 or something, and just never listen to anything again...

So it reminded me, man, there was a GREAT pro shot recording of our show in MI a few months ago, and I just felt like I wanted to share.

Here's one of my favorite versions of Any Way You Want It, check it out here!

BTW, this is a great thread to critique me and my singing, and how much you do or do not like my voice! Rather than hijacking threads where I was just having a normal conversation as a fan! Hey, wow, there's a time and place for everything! LOL...

Really nice video man!
One of my personal favourites is the one from Savannah, GA, you know? It was from the wig days, looking and sounding like ROR Perry! Must say you pulled it off better than Hugo!

This one

Just an OT note, but I have been keeping an eye on YouTube and I managed to listen to your "Going Under" demo. I was awestruck, so much potential. I hope you take Baby Tripswitch all the way!

Haha, thanks man! I have to say in comparing my video to the one you posted above, hopefully people can see a bit of growth in how something can progress and be refined over many years, LOL....

Glad you like the BT stuff. We have a couple videos of live performances from the past few weeks floating around there somewhere as well. Thanks for checking it out!

No problem. I feel it an absolute must follow my fellow Journey singer brethren. As I probably mentioned before, I have been talking back and forth to Ernie Shepherd from Line of Fire and John Murphy from Evolution and I check out their audio and video sometimes and we get into some nice disucussions. I feel lucky to have the resources to talk to you here. The advice from the old Re-Records threads that you gave hit home with me. Anyway, I really find the way you let the changes in your voice from then to now flow to be really admirable, and you really bring out more of YOU in it. And that really shines in the BT stuff especially. I did get so see a live video of Going Under, now that you mention it. Great stuff. I think with the original material you can get more leeway in your voice and separate you somewhat from the comparisons to Steve and thus I get the feeling someday you'll could down as another one of the greats. So keep rocking as much as you can.

Well, here’s my honest critique…

I’ve heard/known (about) Jeremey from being on this Journey forum back to 2005. Since Frontiers work in another part of the country, I’ve only had opportunities to listen/watched video and sound clips. I must say, he did sound high and shrilly to me, and, sometimes, I detect a nasally twang to his vocals. He was no SP…but, who is?

Then, we heard Jeremey got himself an invitation to audition for Journey (and almost was given the job!). How many singers can manage that?…so, he must be pretty good.

I also believe Jeremey’s voice has matured quite a bit from 5-6 years ago, as he says. A couple of years ago, a full Frontiers concert was taped and passed around these boards, and I received a copy from Rick. I listened to the 2 cds from beginning to end a couple of times on my player and, to me, Jeremey sounded outstanding…very little shrill and no nasally twang! To my critical ears, it really did sound like Journey.

Well, that’s my $.02 :) .

Haha! Yeah, you got it SPH! LOL!

Well I mentioned before that people seem to think there's nothing wrong with hijacking threads in order to whine and bitch about me, so I thought I'd made clear in the OP that I was creating an OT post for people to bitch about me however they want, guess u missed that?? :?

Anyway, as you may surmise, there's nothing a few pop shot snipers on this message board can say to crush my feelings, LOL....just wanted to keep it all in one thread, that's all!

Haha!

Okay I will bite.

First I did not threadjack the Mother, Father posting. I posted my opinion about the song and at the same time replied to your post there. You just made a choice to take what I said as a personal attack on you. It is a shame that you feel as though you were wronged somehow by a person who did exactly the same thing that you did in your reply on the original post. If you cannot see that, you have some serious blinders on.

If there was a threadjack it was by you constantly attacking me and calling me names like: cheesehead, jackoff and trying to insinuate that I'm not able to determine what is a good voice. I in return have given you a chance to answer my three remarks about your voice which were that it is weak, has nasal in it, and that it is too high. Again, I will give you the chance here to answer those three questions:

Now for three questions:
1. When you are preforming are you singing higher than Perry did? In my opinion you do.
2. Do you have more nasal in your voice than Perry did? Again in my opinion you do.
3. Is your voice anywhere near as powerful as Perry? If you answer yes on this one, you are lying to yourself and everybody knows it.

I have at all times maintained that I'm not attacking you, just giving my opinion of your singing voice and style.

As to your professional video that you posted in this thread, I will go on and say, my opinion has not changed. Even with good production and sound quality for a video and not some Youtube video shot on a cellphone your singing voice does not have the power of Perry's voice, has tons of nasal in it and is too high for my taste.

I will at this point and go one step further and say that of all the singers that have come and gone since Perry, your voice would rank at the bottom in those three categories for me. Again, not an attack, just a preference.

Lastly. If it is okay for you to state your preference as to Perry's singing voice and style on Mother, Father post how in the world is it not okay for me or anybody else to do the same in response to your post? I will maintain that I was not the person who threadjacked that post, I answered that I preferred a different song and even added a clip to my original reply. I would gladly do the same here and have people compare your video vs. that of Journey /w Steve Perry as lead singer, but I honestly don't know if your ego could take that.

Hey Rich!

Thanks for responding....Now about your three questions. I'm not going to answer them, cause honestly I do not care if you don't like my voice, and no amount of arguing with you will change your opinion. I don't know you, I have no idea who you are or where you come from...I really don't care! In fact, I never attacked you for not liking my voice, despite what an additional 2 pages of posts from the usual suspects say. MANY people don't like my voice. I didn't like my voice on several of the songs I used to cover, and quit covering them!

I know you understand your original post was a prickish thing to say, unsolicited, because you even called yourself the "asshole guy." But I guess you missed where I said Perry's performance on the song was amazing, and I personally prefer his later work.

So I guess there's some people claiming "Rich was responding the same way that Jeremey responded to Steve Perry." But if that was the case, you would have said something along the lines of "Jeremey's voice is amazing, howevere I prefer a deeper timbre." But what you said was, "Excuse me, have you ever listened to yourself? You're nasally, weak, and high pitched (i assume that means high timbred?)." Now my response to your comment had nothing to do with whether or not you "like" my voice, and no amount of revisionist posting Lynn makes, it's all there in black and white. I don't know you, and I thought what you said was unecessarily rude and irrelevant to the thread. Judging by all the people who have proved me wrong, I guess that means I'm just crazy! LOL....Right.....

Nor did I call you a pigfucker. Nor did I call you a "cheesehead." Nor did I call you a jackoff. But you were the one that went on for many posts acting so offended that I was attacking you all over the place.

Anyway, like I said before, it's same ol same ol around MR.com, with all the usual suspects jumping in with their .02....Those acting surprised, shocked and offended are already blinded by teir own agenda and I have no energy to waste trying to prove them wrong.

Pretty much all the earlier ones, LOL!

Line of Fire, Where Were You, Mother, Father, just off the top of my head. I changed up the set list to suit my voice rather than play a bunch of songs I sounded like ass on.

So you made a thread specifically for critiquing (or for jerking of to compliments) but then refuses to answer the criticism. Maybe because cinkidd needs singing lessons before getting the privilege to do so (like you stated in the other thread). No one here have been telling you that you preferring Journey's later work is wrong - that's a matter of opinion.

And for the last time; the passive aggressiveness got to go. No, you didn't call him a cheesehead, but you did throw out "asshole", "fuck off" and my favorite; "that we're fuuuuucked up". Say what you want; but stop hiding what really happened. You got pissed off and took some critique way too hard, and now is trying to play it off. You're like a pubertal girl in a grown man's body.

I listened through some of the Frontier's links on youtube, and it wasn't really that good, compared to Perry. Now, comparing it to Perry is like trying to run faster than a Formula 1 car - you're gonna come short every time. You're a lot better on the RoR songs however. The Suzanne song was well done.

The fact is that you're trying to mimick one of the greatest voices in rock, so expect some criticism - no need to get your lace panties in a bunch.

Hey J, sorry to interrupt the good-natured bickering but I checked out the other pro vids today, Separate Ways is really good. Some nice shots of your guitarist ripping it. It's something on my own wish list once Infinity gets out of limbo, to have a professionally shot video done of one of the full-tribute shows.

Jeremey what can I say, except you are 100% correct about everything you have posted here. No need for me to further respond as it will do no good since you are so very correct. I will give you the win that you so desperately need.

Do I detect an air of sarcasm in there?

This is one of the worst threads Ive ever read on this board. Clicked on it, because I thought it was going to have some kind of footage from 1983, the FRONTIERS TOUR. USELESS!

My honest 2 cents.

You sound really good dude and your pitch, vibrato etc are great but in the last year or so I have noticed that your top end is getting raspy or airy and I can hear you "twisting" vowels to make certain things easier. It is nothing that detracts from the fine performances you guys are putting on.

This catalog is like a curse for vocal cords. Only saying man, dont blow out your voice dude. Every person that has sung that catalog for too long has suffered for it. Am I wrong ? Cain said Perry bleeds when he sings. I think he should have said anyone that sings these songs for too long will bleed eventually.

Its a damn high bar to reach time after time. We aint spring chickens anymore and there aint no shame in dropping to Eb as the J boys themselves have had to do. I would be lying if I didnt admit that my drumming isnt as fast as it used to be but it is smoother. Kind of like the range vs emotion debate that you see amongst those comparing Perry to this guy and that guy and the other guy....

Perry was a freak. Its like any drummer trying to play like Buddy Rich.. No one can because Buddy was a damn freak too !

Just take care man.
