Co-workers and Facebook...

Postby G.I.Jim » Tue Jan 25, 2011 6:23 am

How many of you get requests from co-workers to be friends on Facebook? Do you accept them? I have many co-workers that I don't hang out with, don't talk to at ALL socially, and they all send me requests. I've been accepting them, and once I add them, more and more of them send them to me. I ended up having about 20 people that I don't really know, or care for, added as friends.

This has been bugging me, because I was afraid that some of these people would be using it as a tool to keep track of what I'm doing (I work with some SERIOUSLY nosey people). So anyways, I decided to delete ALL of them today. I just did so, and while it felt good, I wonder how many of them will be pissed! :? Several of them were higher-ups that work in the headquarters of my unit. Oh well... it's done now!

Would you have deleted them as well? Just curious.

I wouldn't do it. Just say "I pretty much just accept close friends and family".

I'm pretty tough to find on there, at least by a search. Some people do track me down through those damn "People you May know" things and all that, but at any rate, I do not add anyone myself (even good friends) and I certainly wouldn't have any co-workers on there. And I really don't even have anything to hide on there, save for when a friend might make a dumb or racy post on my wall. I just like my privacy.

Yep. That's all I'm accepting is close friends from here on out. I feel bad though, because 3 or 4 of them are good friends of mine. I'm not deleting them, but I just hope it doesn't cause animosity for the ones removed. :?

I should have drawn the line early on. Hell 3 of them are people that I don't even like or get along with! One of them is a guy whose ass I almost kicked a few years ago in a heated argument. He sent me a request a couple of days ago. I think he's the straw that broke the camel's back. I just sat here thinking "why in the hell am I ADDING these people?"

I have mostly coworkers on mine, but where I work, it's like a big family. I've known a lot of them for over 25 years and have made some good friends. I only have a couple of management people on there though. They can, will and have used something someone posted on Facebook to attempt to fire them. Gestapo motherfuckers.

I have 2. At first, I intermixed. But then it just felt weird so I split it up. I moved all my co-workers and such to a business one that I treat more like A LinkedIn thing. Then I have all my friends and family on another.

I'll tell you who the special people are - the people that I work with that are also on my friends. :) They are so lucky. Chosen ones. Ha ha.

For me it depends on who that person is. One co-worker who added me was also my boss's sister. I waited until after I quit to approve her request but I approved regular co-workers though.

I only accept requests for co-workers if they are of the same job or lower than me. I rarely accept anyone above me on the corporate ladder, unless they were at one time the same as me and got promoted, and I still trust them.

But most of whom I have for friends at work don't really care if I exist or not. I keep them added in the hopes that they learn things about me and change their view of me. However, I intend to remove most of them if I end up switching jobs. If they don't give a care that I exist other than my work ethic, then chances are they won't care if I move on.

Maybe they'll appreciate me more if they have problems filling any voids I may leave behind.

Yeah, uhhh no...no co-workers and FB...unless we're actually good friends...most of the people at work won't think twice about screwing you over given the chance to gain from it...It's pretty funny that people will FB me that I don't even like, specifically for reasons I think they should know.

Actually, FB is pretty risky, if you don't have your security settings setup properly (and it doesn't help they keep changing it) your personal stuff can get out. FB over 50 people, unless you're famous isn't a good idea. It's just a good idea to keep work and FB worlds separate. http://www.linkedin.com is a great professional resource to connect with co-workers.

Facebook definitely forces the modern thinking man into uncomfortable social dilemmas such as these. To entertain the company of smidgits and lemmings, or nay? I was like you at first, and as hidden as Ehwmatt -- people couldn't find me unless I wanted to be found, but when Facebook changed their privacy settings to where "Friends of Friends" can see you, the floodgates opened and I had to make a choice. I left a lot of friend requests sit out there for about a month while I stewed on the matter. Then I just decided to dispense with conventional logic. I accepted all the strangers and kicked out all my real world friends and family to shield them from the foolishness and the "serial frienders".

I barely use my account at all, and it weren't for keeping in touch with a few people and posting a few pics here and there, I'd close it. Facebook has a way of leeching personal info out of you one way or another, and if it's not hard enough to protect your own data from scammers and creeps, your buddies' friends lists (with your info) give it away freely anyway -- friends lists these days are nothing but marketing databases easily scooped up by all the games, apps, and stupid quizzes they are addicted to. I won't even push a "Like" button in Facebook, because the design is specifically to track your interests for marketing purposes, which Facebook hopes to share with the rest of the Internet via Web 2.0 technology.

If people enjoy Facebook and don't mind the tradeoff for a little bit of fun, fine with me. Me, I can enjoy it as long as I don't include one single iota of legit personal info in their system. The Carnegie Mellon institute did a study last year, and found that a computer program was able to accurately guess about 8.5% of people's Social Security Numbers based on info scooped up from social networking sites and other online sources. Not for me, no thank ye.

Not a bad philosophy Jonny. Hey, do you know where Houlton Maine is? My dad lives there, and I was just out there this past June for a week long camping/fishing trip. I had an amazing time, and caught some beautiful fish. Saw 7 or 8 moose while I was there too! I grew up in Florenceville N.B. for 11 years. Pretty place, but there isn't SHIT there!!!

I know several people that keep 2 different FB accounts. One of them is specifically for CLOSE friends and family only, and the other is much more loosly managed.

That's not a bad idea, but I would hate to have to keep up with two of them. I'll just keep mine to personal friends, family, and the few of you here that send me requests.
