Giving up Diet Coke/Diet pop in general - what do you drink?

Postby Ehwmatt » Mon Feb 14, 2011 9:17 am

Ok guys, Diet Coke/Diet pop is my one terrible vice and I've decided to give it up. Shit's just not good for you. I was drinking 3-5 a day, and it was just getting to be too much.

I always have and do drink a ton of water every day, so I'm set there. I also like most kinds of fruit juices. I like tea too. But, I do NOT drink coffee. Shit disgusts me.

So, I'm curious - what do you all drink other than booze?

I'm thinking I need to find a few things other than water to drink.

Arizona Green Tea and McDonalds Sweet Tea. Between the two, about 150 ounces a day.

Fuck that diet shit. I love Coke. I cut back to water/lemonade/juice through the week and pop during the weekend.
Now let's see how many people will attack us for calling soda "pop " :lol;

When ever Mountain Dew Throwback is in Inventory, I'll go through a 12pack over the weekend.

I don't ever drink pop. Never. Maybe 3-5 cans per year. I drink skim milk, but mostly green tea. I probably drink close to 80-100 ounces of Green Tea every day. I use the same bag for 2 or 3 big cups (16 oz. cup) and uusally have 3 bags a day (usually 7 am, 10 am and 2-3 pm). I mix in Tazo's "Calm" tea at night. Tazo Green Tea is pretty mild with caffeine (as is green tea) in general), but I don't want to have problems sleeping so I cut the green tea around 2 or 3 pm.

I've drastically reduced my intake of soda in general. I love the stuff, especially regular Coke but don't often drink it because I don't want the sugar.

As for the throwback crap...It's just that. Crap. Honestly, the stuff with the high fructose corn syrup is better.

That's my goal too. I drank a lot of pop as a kid, I cut it out COMPLETELY when I got to high school and that continued through most of college. At some point late in college, I got back into diet pop. It's only gotten worse since then. I got some creaky knees, and I don't think my diet pop intake has helped the matter. Shit's not good for your skin either. I'm on day 3 of cold turkey.

Eventually, maybe I'll let myself have 1 or 2 a week, but I'm gonna just cut this shit for about a month at least altogether. By then, I may not even want to have any. The shit actually is pretty disgusting.

I mostly drink plain water but if I do want some flavor I add Crystal Light. I love the Blueberry White Tea flavor-and the weird thing is, when you mix it up, it's orange, but tastes like blueberry.....go figure! I also like a few other flavors like the Rasperry Ice and Grape.

That reminds me, at Christmas, my English Son-in Law was here and I bought him some Mexican Coke..on Christmas Day with no one looking he pulled a surprise taste test on us all, American Coke -v- Mexican...no one could tell the difference.

I think people just fool themselves into believing that the "throwback" stuff must taste better because it has "real" sugar. In my opinion the stuff with the "fake" sugar tastes better.

I taste a difference with the MD, it's not as tart. The Mexican Coke and Pepsi taste flat though, compared to the regular versions.

Water, Horizon's organic skim, Arizona's Arnold Palmers, the occasional white mocha, sweet tea, and so on... Avoiding pop isn't really hard to do. If you want to cut it out, all you really need to do is not buy it. Lots of tastier beverages about.

I drink sweet tea. I'll drink a coke at work because I'm too lazy to bring something from home. On my Friday night, which was last night, as Dan noticed... I usually drink beer until I'm no longer able to sit vertically.

usually sweet tea (not to be confused with the sugar water variation that most places serve masked as sweet tea) or Cheerwine, which is a local soft drink that's somewhat similar to Cherry Coke.

3-4 cups of Premium Whole Bean coffee in the morning, I grind my own beans, makes a big difference. I also like my coffee black. I drink about 2-3 bottles of green tea usually throughout the day. This time of year I enjoy a nice afternoon cup of coffee (usually while enjoying a cigar) I drink a Coke Zero with my dinner usually, sometimes red wine. I pretty much only drink beer on the weekends.

I'm on a strict diet regimin right now, and have cut back almost all of my water consumption! It's been really tough, but I'm strictly drinking beer, wine and coffee right now. It's tough, but it had to be done! 8)

Man, I can't tell you how addicted myself and my brother is to diet beverages. Any, it doesn't matter. My kick right now is Diet Coke, always drank diet Pepsi but Diet Coke has now consumed me. I'm usually a workout freak and tend to give up and sacrifice all my wants and craves rather than needs. Around the winter time, I tend to let loose a bit and Diet pop is my memo. Actually, I just got done drinking a 24 oz bottle of Diet Root Beer, was delish but I'm well aware of the concern and how bad it is indeed for you. Hell, we go through cases, upon case's of diet pop a day. If you knew how much we went through during a week, then it may be alerting to even you to hear how much we consume here.

With that said, Dan is right. Green Tea is a very good alternative to a craving and in many ways more than one, is good for you. Obviously water is the best thing to put inside your body to a certain extent but I know cravings are hard to kick and taste is needed even though it's good to get atleast a couple glass's of water in a day. I don't know how we'll kick the diet shit but it's certainly a big part in my own personal craving.

Anyone else ever notice how the anti-soda snobs are similar to the anti-television snobs? It's always kinda funny how soon the folks who don't drink it like to brag about it just like the TV snobs feel the need to trumpet their lack of television viewing.

I'm not gonna have a problem cutting pop again. I just get it out of idle habit, like when I'm grabbing a sub at Jimmy John's. I have pretty good willpower and I've never had a problem quitting a behavior/habit (well... except for nailbiting. Really trying hard on that right now).

I do drink tea already. I just think for the time being, whenever I do feel the need for something other than water, I'm gonna make a glass of tea. Should be solid.

What exactly are the health risks with diet drinks? I must drink between 75 and 100 ounces of diet coke a day.

The funny thing is, my Cheesehead boyfriend used to call it soda til he moved down here to Chicago (now, to get him to say frontroom and viaduct instead of saying living room and underpass)

I don't know how much of it is substantiated by clear and convincing medical evidence, but I know they're supposed to be bad for your bones/joints and stain your teeth (maybe more of a vanity risk than a health risk...). I'm not sure, but I may have heard some things about cancer or other diseases. I personally think that might be a bit of a stretch, but who knows. I just know the rate I was consuming diet pop at was not healthy.

I wish I could be one of those snobs. I've been really, really trying to cut pop out altogether but it's just not working for me. I am as addicted to Coca Cola as some people are to meth. I hear drug addicts talk about how they just can't get enough, when their next hit will be, etc...and I realize that's me. I literally take medication for no other reason than to help me stop drinking Coke. It's a huge problem for me.
