Giving up Diet Coke/Diet pop in general - what do you drink?

General Intelligent Discussion & One Thread About That Buttknuckle

Fact Finder wrote:The researchers calculated that people who drank diet pop every day had a 61 per cent higher risk of a vascular event than those who reported drinking no pop. After they adjusted the findings to account for patients' diabetes, waistline size and other lifestyle differences, the increased risk persisted, leaving diet pop drinkers at a 48 per cent increased risk.

It's not clear why diet pop drinkers would have a higher risk of stroke and other events, but previous research has suggested diet soft drinks can promote a "sweet tooth."

Dr. Maureen Storey, senior vice-president of science policy for the American Beverage Association, said in a statement that there is no evidence "that diet soda uniquely causes increased risk of vascular events or stroke."

I love how these articles sidestep the issue of aspartame. I swear, that fucking company is in everybody's pockets.

And carbs will raise your blood sugar, because your body breaks carbs down into glucose. But sugar substitutes and insulin are not directly involved with each other, despite what all the diet soda haters now want people to believe, lol.

That's what it was. Thanks!

No problem, lol, I've worked with a (juvenile) diabetic nurse practitioner for years, she drinks diet soda about once or every other day and it's never been an issue for her  I've learned more about diabetes, insulin, etc. from her than I ever did in nursing school, lol.

Woah. They teach you stuff like that in nursing school?

The whole "brain craving" shit is just another stupid excuse for the chubbies. People need to stop blaming Coca Cola, McDonald's - getting fat is your own responsibility to avoid, as long as you're an adult. The dads and moms which feeds their kids crap should be thrown under a damn bus however.

Aspartame! YES!!
Thank you - THAT's the name of that $#!T.... :x

That stuff apparently causes depression in some people....and, since I've battled that problem in the past - while drinking a ton of Diet Pepsi -
...well NO WONDER I was so miserable!

These days, I favor of bottled water & Poland Spring flavored carbonated water.
I haven't had soda in almost 20 years - and my skin doesn't break out and I feel SO MUCH better! :D

You can call it "shit" all you want, but there are tons of skinny people who live on diet Coke and carbs because of that cycle also, and they stay skinny somehow. So that's not just some excuse for "chubbies". Go study endocrine a little bit more.

It only takes a very brief web search on Aspartame and you're flooded with information as to how bad that stuff is for people.

If you think diet pop caused or exacerbated your depression, you've got bigger fish to fry than depression. Like being nuts!

FDA: "To date, the FDA has not determined any consistent pattern of symptoms that can be attributed to the use of aspartame, nor is the agency aware of any recent studies that clearly show safety problems."

MIT News: "Even daily large doses of the high-intesity sweetener aspartame, also known as Nutrasweet, had no adverse effect on study subjects' health and well-being, a visiting scientist at MITreported in the American Journal Of Clinical Nutritionlast week.

"We conclude that aspartame is safe for the general population." said Paul A. Spiers, visiting scientist in the Clinical Rsearch Center (CRC).

Oh I never said anything about aspartame in particular, or that it's good for you. Was just pointing out to Dr. Davis up there that there is a connection between people ingesting artificial sweeteners and then craving carbs, and it's not ALL fat people who are in that cycle. There are plenty of people who are not overweight who drink tons of diet soda and eat carbs. I worked with a nurse once who lived on diet Coke and carbs, and was skinny as a rail. No, she wasn't healthy, but she was skinny. So his little observations are not always correct. They're just opinions, lol.

I don't give a fuck how many studies and "peer-reviewed medical journal" reports out there "conclude" it is a safe and completely harmless substance. Most of those studies focus on the "calories saved" by drinking beverages without sugar or corn syrup (I refuse to call it corn sugar like in those stupid commercials).

2 cups of coffee before work in the morning, nothing but water at work all day, and usually a glass of this with dinner:

Image

Comes in about 6 different flavors but the plain green tea is my favorite. I believe it's sweetened with cane sugar but it's a little sweet for me unless I use a huge glass of water. I'd drink more but I'd be up peeing all night  (tea kinda does that to you).

Diet pop (or anything with aspartame) is disgusting. The only time I drink regular pop is when it has vodka in it  (but vodka also goes well with above mentioned liquid tea mix)

Use stevia. It's an all-natural sweetener derived from the plant. One little bitty packet will sweeten your entire kuppa kawfee. It will take a little getting used to because it doesn't exactly taste like cane sugar, corn syrup or Equal/Splenda/Sweet 'n' Low.

 The Breakfast of Champions  Part of my New Year's resolution was to revamp my eating habits (last year in my 30s), so no more Pepsi for breakfast for me. I never eat within the first couple of hours of waking up, so I switched to tea first thing. Iced tea in the summer!

I'm going to start drinking more water at work - there is a big cooler of bottled water right behind me and since I don't get a whiff of chlorine from it like filtered tap water, it won't make me sick. I like those Tetley infusions too - so far I've only tried the Classic with lemon and I have the Nestea flavour packets in Summer Peach - they use Sucralose, so I can drink those.

I don't care how many studies they do that claim it is "safe" either - I can drink litres of regular Pepsi no problem, but half a can of any diet pop with Aspartame leaves me nauseated with a wicked headache, and if I get through the whole can, I get dizzy. No thanks! Smaller levels might be relatively safe for most people, but not for me. Luckily everything is labelled so I can avoid it in other products as well.

They're putting that shit in everything. I looked at a package of OTC medication (chewable tablets) I checked out for somebody else. I noticed aspartame was the first ingredient listed on the side of the box. Ridiculous. They didn't use the stuff beyond three tablets (out of one foil sheet, of which there were four sheets). It made them hurl something fierce. And incredibly, it was a nausea medication. Imagine that. :?

The same goes for a friend of mine: one can of Diet Coke and he's got a headache.
