Postby rdekker » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:09 pm

just found out on twitter, Arnel Pineda tweet:

Hear a preview of 3 songs from the new #Journey album ECLIPSE at the Planet Hollywood concert on Feb 23 http://uly.me/101aw. See you there!

Also in a earlier tweet he said that Neal announced a 24 may release date.

Journey giving preview of new album at Planet Hollywood

Jonathan Cain knew the "Glee" thing was going to be big.

"I've got two teenage daughters that keep me abreast of what's going on in teenage world," says the Journey man who turns 61 on Feb. 26. They assured him, "This is huge, OMG."

Yes it was. "Don't Stop Believin' " became the Fox TV hit's de facto theme song and set download sales records for a song that first hit the Top 10 in late 1981. The TV cast's remake was nominated for a Grammy, and Cain was in the audience with his 17-year-old daughter Sunday when it lost to his friends from Train.

"Good for us and good for 'Glee,' " Cain says of the song for which he plays the immortal piano lead-in as the group's keyboardist. "Glad they can get some mileage out of a song that's almost 30 years old now."

Cain says he saw it coming, even before the song's inclusion in the "Rock of Ages" Broadway musical that paved the way to "Glee." When Journey regrouped in 1998 and started to play "Don't Stop Believin' " live, "it was the one that always resonated with the kids, and they would always start charging the stage. I knew something was up. I didn't know how big it was going to get.

"It's kind of neat to see that side of it through their eyes, how the young generation perceives us," he adds. "Journey's sort of ageless in that sense. We're not like some old creeper band from the '80s with long hair that nobody cares about."

Journey, in fact, seems the one veteran group that's been aided rather than diminished by drafting a younger, sound-alike singer -- 43-year-old Arnel Pineda -- to replace the voice of its '80s heyday, Steve Perry. "We like his energy. He's brought a lot of heart and soul to this band," Cain says of the quintet still helmed by founding guitarist Neal Schon.

The Filipino Pineda also inspires a lot of national pride. "When you can play Manila for 40,000 people, that kind of works."

Come May, however, Journey wants to quit looking back and start living as a present-tense band again. Wednesday's audience at Planet Hollywood's concert hall is due for a three-song preview of the new album, "Eclipse," due May 24.

Cain describes it as "a concept record with some spiritual themes to it. Pretty tough, hard-hitting stuff. This is Journey with big combat boots on. And helmet and a rifle."

Cain's lyrics sustain the band's hopeful themes of "searching for soulfulness and enlightenment and love and all the stuff that Journey's about." But the album also has a larger dynamic sweep with "some darker stuff in there."

"We just felt like it was time to send a message to the world about how we feel about life in general," he says.

The album incorporates Hindu principles of Tantra, "the belief that life is kind of a weave, a circle of energy, a life force that's woven with the universe in all of us. We dove deep into it."

Cain goes so far as to call the album "one of those headphone records."

That's a genre that may take a bit of explaining for younger "Gleeks."

Cool title. Like "Frontiers" and "Infinity", it has a ring of larger-than-life mystery about it. Little surprised Neal chose it, since one of the Hardline albums was "Double Eclipse", but it's a great choice nonetheless.

I see it's already mentioned, but yeah, Hardline's first album was "Double Eclipse" and Neal was in that band, so it is weird to pick "Eclipse" IMO, but it is a neat title for an album. Even though it's been used already, lol. There was some metal band with that exact album title too.

I don't think we're gonna get any opinions of "Its okay". I think we'll either love it or hate it. They need to maintain the sound of hopefulness, and I'll likely love it.

nothing wrong with dark as long as the songs are strong. Some of Journey's best have been dark songs....Mother Father, Livin' to Do, Out of Harms Way, etc.

If the songs are strong, it won't matter what the theme (or sound) is. If the songs are poor, it won't matter what the theme (or sound) is.

It will be the eighth album released with this name (the most recent one was in 2008). Here is art work from the other ones, luckily it seems none of them use a hindi inspired design. The Amorphis one looks kind of cool.

I'm expecting some kind of indian lettering or sanskrit on the cover.

No, I just jacked a picture and added the little blue text boxes. I found a font for the center text which is Eclipse, written in Sanskrit.

There is a difference between having an album with Hindi influences, and having a Hindi Concept. Having indian sounds...etc. is ok. Having a concept where all the songs weave into each other, a la Operation Mindcrime - from a band like Journey sounds lame. However, this is my opinion. So please don't hit me with your purse.... :P

Despite what Neal said, they have made radio friendly songs on this album and we'll probably get word of a single being given to stations sometime in May. I can't picture Journey releasing something akin to Days of Future Passed or Animals, though.
I can see every song being unified by a spiritual theme but as far as all of the tracks contributing to a single story overall, I'm not so sure.

I just want the album to rock. If that means 12 different version of Edge Of The Blade, cool. If what we get is 12 different versions of Colors Of The Spirit with fucking harmoniums, Sitars and Sarangis blaring, I'm gonna have to express myself and I AIN'T TALKING MADONNA.

What's the over/under on the number of songs with Love in the title, or how many different ways of saying faded photographs there will be?

They stole the title from Eclipse, the Northeast Ohio tribute band featuring Paul Soos and Jason Kelty. Unbelievable. Love the Twilight reference, lolz.

The more Dan/St John masturbates over this album, the more I think it's gonna be terrible. If Pineda can't pronounce shit, I don't care what is going on musically on this damn album. I cannot stand to hear him butcher the English language again.

Even if it's great, I say we trash it anyway, just for the title.

They should have went with Tantra, all I can associate Eclipse with is those prepubescent Twilight Movies.

You know...if concept just means a theme weaves throughout the entire album,,Arrival was kinda a concept album about life:

Higher Place
Live and Breathe
To be Alive Again
Signs of Life
Livin to do
We will meet again
Lifetime of Dreams

Arrival was a very positive album, and quite good. I didn't care for the ballads however. SA shot his wad on Tyketto's Shine Album with the ballad 'Get Me There'

Yeah, the term can go either way, though the Story albums were really what most people associated 'concept' with during the 70s. Pink Floyd really enforced the public's way of thinking about it as having only one definition.
