The band should go and buy about 25,000 copies themselves and just use them to sell in South America and Europe. If I was managing Journey that fucker would be #1 that week. But would that be legal WikiDon? I'm assuming that might violate their deal(s) with various distributors in those particular areas.

I believe they would be considered promo ( not a real sale) because the band bought them. If you saw my World sales breakdown, the lack of South American countries above the 3% line of overall music purchases tells you that sales below the border are mostly pirate copies. The disc has to sell in UK and Japan to dominate internationally.
If Journey gave away copies on their South America tour, that shit would be up on Pirate Bay so fast and we would be talking about it here which the band wouldn't want before the official launch, especially as the group would struggle getting the torrents shut down on Pirate Bay's servers.

I think they should go for the $7 price point instead of the $9 one and forego a little money if it helps initial sales get them to #1.

Good point. I forgot that they're touring some of those countries before the release. :?

The South America/ Puerto Rico run will all be finished five weeks before the release. I would expect them to play maybe only one new song during those shows and for their old label Sony to really benefit from this catalog wise.

I'm wondering if this will be the opposite of Revelation and the band has gone for broke on the production and studio side, making a disc that might be a little difficult to pull off live wthout a lot of pre-recorded instruments and backing pipes?

I personally would love it to be a headphone album but I know many of those don't translate well to the live setting.

I bet they play at least 2 and probably 3 at every show, Don. My guess is that they want them to be very polished before they hit the U.S., where the fans will be very critical of mistakes.

If this is indeed a sonic masterpiece, another question would be if Neal would say fuck it and go back to touring without stepping down, at least for the U.S. leg of the tour?

The album incorporates Hindu principles of Tantra, "the belief that life is kind of a weave, a circle of energy, a life force that's woven with the universe in all of us. We dove deep into it."

Cain goes so far as to call the album "one of those headphone records."

I drive less than an hour a day, during which I listen to local radio for those short 10-20 minute trips to work or the store or whatever.
The rest of the time, I'm walking from my office to an eatery or store, jogging around Silver Lake in the evening, sitting at my work desk with one monitor on the internet and spreadsheets on the other, all while wearing headsets. Pretty much five to six hours every weekday with headphones on, thus I would like a headphone album, something with clean production and material that's enjoyable enough to listen to both musically and sonically for a long period of time.

In my particular case, those days with the Coral Speakers, Onkyo Amps, Nakamichi tape decks, Denon Turntables and Kyocera CD players have long since past.

I hope it's not too similar to another headphone record with a song called Eclipse on it...

All that is now
All that is gone
All that's to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

However good Eclipse may or may not be, I'm pretty sure Dark Side is better.

Haven't been this stoked about a Journey album since TBF ... but that one sucked ass. I'm bound to go 1 for 2. I like what I'm hearing from Schon, Cain and Shirley so far. This will be their hardest and most melodic record ever. At least that's what it sounds like.

Although, I'm hopeful.....in my opinion, most of what cavedrunk produces, turns to shit on a stick.

Regardless, I'll keep an open mind on this record.....if it's some fucking stupid ass concept record instead of just a package of good songs, I'm going to be fucking relentless, though.

I think the talk of a concept record has been over-played. What I hear is that the lyrics all revolve around the forces of love and life and relationships etc... No Pink Floyd ambient crap here I think.

I agree about Shirley's production. Revelation was pretty bad, but they took this to a new guy, David Kalmusky, and he and Schon mixed it. Hey, you see Allen Craft is listed as an employee in Neal Schon Productions (along with Herbie Herbert). What do you make of that? :? I had a post with the guy explaining everything they did. You probably would have enjoyed the read. I'll try to find it.

Here you go, Frank:

Here is an in-depth explanation from a guy claiming to be David Kalmusky himself. Perhaps Jeremey or one of our other resident experts can decode some of this information! :? The bolded parts are quotes from David's uncle that he is addressing/correcting, and there are also 2 bolded quotes from Kevin Shirley.

Hi Guys... my uncle (BobKat) Did a Fantastic job, considering I fed him a PILE of information in about 4 & 1/2 minutes, after leaving a family new years dinner without having talked about all of this stuff, to not be rude, dominate the conversation, and bore the family with Gear talk.

I'll make a few corrections here, (as there are a few inaccuracies) and if anyone has any other questions, I'll pop on from time to time, and see if there are any.

The Producer, Kevin (Caveman) Shirley, is also a famous Mixer (Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Journey etc...)

The Deadline for the Journey record got pushed back, as Tour dates for the band started to surface for spring, and Kevin Shirley had already had Iron Maiden, John Hyatt, Joe Bonamassa, and several other sessions FILLING up his winter.

Jon Cain (Keyboard Player for journey) and I have become friends, from working on his Daughters demos for her record, and he got me the gig cutting the vocals on the Journey record... had become a Fan of my Mixing... asked me for a bunch of my mixes to play for Neal & Kevin, and through the process, I, in the end was asked to mix the record.

All of the Main Tracks, Beds and Overdubs were tracked, By Kevin Shirley, at Fantasy Studios in San Francisco, the Multitracks of the whole album were brought to me to Cut Vocals. Throughout the album, the guys wanted to replace, add a few Keyboard, BGV, Bass, and Guitar Overdubs... Some of which we recorded in My room, some were done at Cain's Studio in SF, and some, back at Fantasy.

Kevin Shirley Rough Mixed the whole record in, for a Gauge of Levels / Placement, he also mixed one "Good" - as a sonic Gauge of how he heard the record. I Took the multitracks into the Neve Room at Quad Studios Nashville, for about 12 days, and Cascade mixed the album, using Kevin's Roughs as references, to 32 Stems back into ProTools. Certainly not All songs were 100 + tracks, but some of them, after BGV stacks, multi mic'd guitar parts, String Sections etc... were pretty big sessions.

My Objective at Quad, was to mix the record to a 32 Track format, using the Neve Console EQ, Compression, and all of my Favorite outboard gear, to make the album sound as Big as Possible, but then be able to have Recall / Tweakabillity of an ITB Mix... So

Back in MY mix room... Jonathan, Neal & I Finished the album ITB, sending Ref's to Kevin over the internet. (Kevin also came to Nashville on a John Hyatt session and checked in on the Mixes) We closed the mixes 2 days before Christmas, but i got a "Final Tweak List" from a Neal text from Hawaii - So I'll make those changes tomorrow, and fingers crossed, we'll be set to Master.

Kevin Shirley has signed off on the Mixes, and published a mention of our mixes in THIS ARTICLE Here, which Quotes Kevin saying :

Quote from Kevin Shirley:
I also had the opportunity to work with a hero of mine in JOHN HIATT, and after a terrific session, we've slated more recordings for next year, which is so exciting for me. John also makes an appearance on Joe Bonamassa's new album, and loved Joe's version of 'I Know A Place' from Joe's Black Rock album. So a great month in November. David Kalmusky and Neal Schon did a terrific job of mixing the Journey record, and I did a few mixes for them as guidelines, and they took their time doing it and sent them to me, and it was a great collaborative effort. Look for that next summer...

Well there is no "Leader Of Journey", it's pretty much a democracy, with a bit of anarchy... Nevertheless, Jonathan Cain is Building a Studio, which I will have a Mix Room in, and am Helping design, with Jonathan & Chris Huston (Engineer on Led Zeppelin II, The Who "Who Sell Out", and about 100 other iconic rock albums) - a Trident TSM 52 Input Console in the main Control Room, and (No Neve Yet) in My Mix Room, but "On the watch" - 7 ISO spots INCLUDING the Drum, Piano, Keyboard Room, 2 Vocal Booths, Guitar ISO etc... Cain's got 2 Pianos... just don't know which ONE he'll bring into the Studio.

Anyways, Bob told me about this forum, so i thought I'd check it out, and I'm a stickler for details... so... I thought I'd pop on, and account for the details that occurred.

Wishing everyone a prosperous 2011

Hi Rick... they "cascaded This mix to 32 Tracks / Stems" - Not like old school "Ping Ponging" I know something about this workflow, it's actually a TON of work, most people don't go to all this trouble... Where most people mix from the multitrack down to 2 (TWO) channels and call it a day - (basically a final Mix) Like mixing those 100+ tracks to the 2 Mix back into pro tools, and thats what you get... these guys actually Bounce Mixed the WHOLE record, out the console into to THIRTY TWO tracks for Summing - it's actually going to be pretty incredible, sounds like they're not cutting any corners, and doing everything VERY high quality.

Most records these days, are mixed out 2 Channels once the whole thing is in ProTools. Sounds like Neal took over this Mix, to really make a statement. That workflow, should be really awesome.... really, really awesome.
