I'll take the lack of responses in this thread to indicate that Espee has no excuse.....

Dang...That one from 2006 is about as bad as I've heard. He has actually sounded better in recent years, though, but man, he was awesome back in the day. He had every bit the pipes that guys like Perry and Gramm had.

Perhaps Perry has a bit more pride in what he was and doesn't need to hang on to wring every last nickel out of "the legacy" like some of the other douches in this band need to do. This notion that Perry owes anyone anything has always been fucking absurd. The dude is a senior citizen at this point in his life, so if he wants to put his feet up and relax, more power to him. His body of work speaks for itself and anyone taking shots at the guy because he simply doesn't want to, or can't physically sing any longer, is clueless. I'm fairly certain that Larry Bird couldn't jump into an NBA game right now, play 30 minutes, and come remotely close to resembling what he was back in the day. That said, it doesn't change his greatness, and Perry's greatness isn't altered one iota because he passes his time watching baseball games.

Then he should keep his fucking mouth shut and not tell us that he "thinks about it all the time," "has been practicing scales," and have his bullhorns constantly reminding us how they just heard him sing and "he sounds as good as anytime in the mid-80's." Larry Bird doesn't hint at a comeback every year. Perry is just like Favre ... only he never comes back. And that makes him an even bigger doucher.

Could it be sore throat, bad day, etc........? Singers are subject to illness, and bad performances. They are not spot on all the time. I don't buy he cannot sing for a second. I think it is more of a case of not wanting to deal with the Monday Night quarterbacks and critics, and giving up his privacy that would keep him away.

Not to mention the fact that he is older and touring is hard on your body. Somehow people get it in their heads that age keeps people from singing.

I disagree and I think it is more of a personal reason that we are not privy to that is behind his reasoning to not sing or to sing in the future. None of us except for maybe Lora and Cyndy know him personally.

Truthfully the fans are not like they used to be. People feel now they are called upon to scrutinize every note and performance. Instead of enjoying a performer, we think we are professional critics ready to jump on any mistake and say, "See there! He can't do it anymore! He lost it! HA!!!! BWAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!"

LOL! Well maybe not that bad, but you get the point. I would love to hear him, if he ever wanted to brave the "new generation of critic based fans"

I remember Journey Force Fans that were eager to hear new music. Not looking for their favorite band to fail, and predicting failure before ever listening to even one note.

I don't think he needs to worry about singing when everybody else in the world is pondering why he won't sing. The world's axis is off balance with all these thoughts and at this point we have to realize we are not encouraging him to sing but instead we are discouraging him to sing with the awful mean thoughts and questions we direct at him. It is all negativity. If we keep these disharmonious thoughts he will never sing again. We argue with him in our minds, we're mad and seem to be angry with him for everything conceivable that he might have done to anyone or ever said or did to you or me or Sue or Richard or Cleo or Martin. Plus there's the guy who is still angry for him swearing at him all those years ago when he was a child and SP was at the height of his popularity and all he ever wanted was for SP to sign an autograph which he didn't and there is still hell to pay. There are the concerts he canceled and I'm sure the list goes on and on. If all you can do is scream and bemoan the fact that he's not doing what you wish for him to do then surely he will never do it. I know I wouldn't want to sing another note if I were him. There would not be too much pleasure of the thought of singing. And when you are a bit so popular with his lovely fan base as he is and has been; or have a little too much money then most people have and the fire to sing does not taste so wonderful in your mouth as it once did, and he's gotten use to avoiding the thought of singing and convincing himself that time has come and gone by side stepping it for 15 or more years; I think the obvious is pretty clear. The fat lady has finally sung. lol!

Yep. Steve is obviously his own harshest critic and if he can't deliver as was, then who can blame him. Let him be.

If you look closely at the 2006 version of the song I posted - you can see Steinhardt(violinist) keepingan eye out for Steve....I know he was struggling, and Robbie knew it...that's why he helps on the vocals. Steve was a mess.....

I see the fat notveryprettyface Portland popped in and agreed with this stupid assertion. Sucking up? I wouldn't go see Steve Perry if he was in my kitchen. I asked the guy questions about singing and his career. I have long been on record as saying he had about a 5 year run where I thought his voice was the greatest of all-time. I'm not a fanboy, John. I can separate the douche from the talent. I'm not gonna deride the guy's immense talent in the past because I think he's a shit bandmate. Get a grip.
