Multitrack recording has evolved to a sort of hybridized version of what it used to be... in that most artists still track through a large mixing console (like a Neve or SSL) to get the "sound" tracking through one of those consoles gives... and the tracks are recorded to hard drive... or tape... or both... There is also something that tracking through these large consoles does sonically that is lost when not tracking through them.. it's the "space" the console creates that you'd have to hear to understand...

Anyhoo - the best thing is that in the modern studios these consoles also interface with computers, so the whole project (all the tracks, fader automation, EQ settings, effects settings, etc) ... are now all saved to a computer file, and can be simply recalled (just like opening a Word doc).

Creating "Stems" still requires the bouncing of individual tracks down to less tracks... but that is normal in multitrack recording. Most modern multitrack recordings consist of guitars alone that have dozens of tracks... as an example, "stacking" is how thick yet clear guitar tones are created... most modern mixes have layered snares too... lots of mixers will blend snare samples to get a certain sound and presence (listen to Nickleback's "Gotta Be Somebody"- that is not just one snare) ...so it isn't out of the norm for there to be near 100 tracks, or more..

Stems are a great way to get control over a mix... usually stems go to a "summing box" that is "analog" (meaning tubes not digital) to add more warmth to the overall sound... summing boxes have been pretty popular for what they add to mixes in terms of depth and warmth..

The tracks (as stems) are then brought back into something like ProTools (or simply re-routed back into the console) to mix... It really is becoming the best of both worlds for engineers...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

The album incorporates Hindu principles of Tantra, "the belief that life is kind of a weave, a circle of energy, a life force that's woven with the universe in all of us. We dove deep into it."

Cain goes so far as to call the album "one of those headphone records."

In what dimension does one buy an album to listen to it on their headphones, and not in the car or on a sweet ass sound system? Random guy: "Dude, put that awesome new record on". Mr. Dingleberry: "I will do no such thing! That is an album for my headphuuunes. Hurr Hurr."

I took it to mean that it's one of those headphone records, so you don't have people yelling at you to turn that shit off!!!

Nononononono...
(Well, RWF, actually that may be the case...)

Parfy, you're not much of an audiophile are you? Headphone albums... especially if you have a good pair... they're awesome. There's so much shit you don't hear through the car or on a sweet ass sound system. There are intricacies, nuances, tonality, and on and on that you only get the full effect of with a good pair of headphones.

And I hope all the hype around this album that I've seen here actually comes to pass. It sounds like it could be a worthwhile listen. Which would be a nice change from everyone else phoning it in. Okay, Cain, you have my attention.

Regardless, I'll keep an open mind on this record.....if it's some fucking stupid ass concept record instead of just a package of good songs, I'm going to be fucking relentless, though.

I think the talk of a concept record has been over-played. What I hear is that the lyrics all revolve around the forces of love and life and relationships etc... No Pink Floyd ambient crap here I think.

This is what I am getting too...I believe at the end of the the day it's going to be Journey but with a harder edge. Afterall, these are the same themes they have always written songs around.

Thank God for people that go to concerts and get good video from the shows. I expect that we'll have some decent footage on Thursday morning. Personally, I could never do that during a show, but I'm glad others can! Concert calls are one thing, but seeing the entire concert from the lens of a phone would blow! Why even go?!?

Fu Fu, have a great time and enjoy the show. Wednesday simply doesn't work from Pittsburgh and Saturday is my mom's birthday or I'd be there! But you can bet your sweet ass that you'll see me this summer!   8)

I have to admit to being extremely geeked about ECLIPSE. With all the talk of taking the time to mix it properly and a different guy (ears) behind the mix, It really does sound like it's going to be very good. Let's face it most acts these days are just going through the motions but, it really sounds like everyone involved put quality time and energy into this one!

The show for Friday night seems to have sold well but Wednesday night's gig has a lot of seats still available, even in the orchestra section. I guess mid-week in February is not a happening night. I assume the band will use the opportunity to tweak everything for a Big Friday night concert.

I wonder how many minutes Night Ranger will be out there? Still surprised they got invited for these early shows.

A concept album is more than just an album with songs having a common theme...think Queenryche's 'Operation: Mindcrime' or the RUSH album 2112...

Almost every album ever released has elements of love, and relationship themes....there's nothing new there.

I think whoever is touting this as a concept album needs to revisit the differences in "concept" and "thematic" in regards to the new album's hype. In my opinion "concept" albums explicitly tell a story. Take out the track breaks and it still all comes together coherently. Thematic is more like musing over a few threads in the same tapestry to convey a general idea or emotion.

No?

It's probably just a lot easier for Kneel to say 'concept' instead of all that other stuff. And besides, it makes it sound like the band is finally donning its big boy pants again after all these years.
I think the majority of us music listeners know that we are not getting Rush, Floyd or the Moody Blues here.

That's not Journey, but is some pretty ripping stuff. I'm expecting stuff in the vein of We Will Meet Again meets Livin to Do meets Little Girl
