Journey's new album...as it relates to Steve's motivation

Postby swataz » Mon Feb 21, 2011 4:11 am

The title of this thread...I was just thinking about this today for some reason. Maybe it's the flu I have had for a week now, but for whatever reason it moved me post.

Now, we all know of Steve's lack of motivation in the past, including a big nothing insofar as recording and releasing anything when the last Journey CD came out.

I am wondering if Steve, now 62 and still in 'shit or get off the pot' mode, will feel any extra added incentive to polish his demos, or release more polished songs he already may have -- either through some distributorship agreement or on his own -- just so he can 'steal a little thunder' from Journey, so to speak.

It's more likely that it will come and go and he will remain retired or inactive, but if there is ever a time I could see him crawl out of a darkened studio with something, this would be it.

Thoughts, anyone?

It's a nice thought, but would he really want to put himself in direct competition with them?

He's what, 4 albums under at this point? IOW, he would have released by now, if it were ever his motivation.

I hope I understood your response the way you meant it...if not, my apologies.

Maybe I am jaded about Journey, but it's not an epic David vs. Goliath battle in my mind.

Journey with Arnel, Soto and Augieri, all excellent singers and frontmen, never filled the void in Journey like, say Hagar with Van Halen or like Brian Johnson in AC/DC after Bon Scot died. Both rebirths of those bands were massively successful. Journey, despite the sales of Revelation, is not in that tier.

Steve is retired and most people here have given up hope to ever hear from him again. Even Wix the self-proclaimed number one fan to Steve Perry has gotten off of the train.

While none of us really want to accept it, many of us have.

Steve is doing what he needs to do and that is okay, except for the fact that he just refuses to come out and say "I'm done, I'm toast, put butter on me and and call it a day." He will never ever be able to do that while we sit here and pine away for him, and Cyndi and Lora can tell him that his fans still refuse to give up.

Maybe when he is dead (I'm not wishing/wanting that in any way shape or form) we may get some unreleased material from him, once his daughter gets the rights to his music. Then again maybe not.

Ya know... I think the "thunder" would be stolen the other way around...

Just the rumor of a Perry release would create more of a buzz for the impending JBYZ album... than they could create for themselves...

And I'd bet they'd welcome it... all the way to the bank...

Well, throughout the years, it has been debated that every time Journey comes out with something new, SP surfaces -- either with a re-release or some other news item -- to steal the spotlight. I never thought much of that hypothesis. For sure, the SP news front was pretty quiet during the Revelation onslaught.

The only time you will hear from Steve Perry is in spring training and or/ the world series....IF the Giants are involved.

Other then that, as much I hate to say it from my own viewpoint, Steve Perry seems to be retired...Good for him. He is still young enough to enjoy it.

It's not a "hypothesis," it's a fact. But I don't think it's his doing. Much better odds that it's Sony/Columbia riding the small wave of the Journey release to showcase the back catalog. But there's virtually always something to coincide with a Journey release.

The best answer i could give you all is a 100 percent DONE.
My cousin who lives close to San Diego did in fact see Perry in the summer of 2010 at a well known resturant. He noticed that as Perry turned around to walk out as they were coming in, Perry did in fact have a fork sticking out of his back.

Exactly. Just like the thing they did with the little blue stickers on the greatest hits and throwing sales prices on Journey Catalog items every time a Journey song has some traction in the media.
It doesn't take much. Tron came out and a week later Journey's Greatest Hits jumped up 100 places to #45 on the album chart I'm sure as soon as Columbia received the licensing request for Separate Ways, one of the marketing gurus saw the need to have extra stock available for distribution around the date of the movie's premiere.

I'm sure even now, the Latin units of Sony/BMG are preparing to fill the void that Journey will make on their South America tour by not having Eclipse ready for release down there until after that part of the tour is over. Though, the pirating is so rampant down there, it's hard for any music entity to make a lot of money on product sales.

Instead of buying back his solo material, Neal should have gotten Cain and Ross on board to try to buy back some of the original Journey sound recordings from Sony. Probably a little too late now as the value has gone up quite a bit over the last three years.

Sadly Andrew is once again spot on! The man is retired, he just can't seem to admit it to himself or his fans.

Oh well, at least I have OLD stuff to listen to. He will always be my favorite singer. And the Journey of 80's will always be my favorite band. But what he has done, is taught me to listen to Neal, Jon and Steve Smith and their solo work. I have bought their stuff now. And they can thank SP for that. Ross can always make me laugh..

If he is not going to get his fifty songs to us in his lifetime, I hope that he will's the lyrics to the band that took him off the turkey farm.

Is that 100% confirmed, Andrew? Is that ever, or do you mean in the near future? If anyone would know, you would.

It would be nice if Steve would actually just say that. Anyway, good for him and thanks for all the great music and memories.
