Why no official videos???

Postby Carlitto H@kk » Thu Feb 24, 2011 9:16 am

Why has this band completely disregarded doing any videos over the past few albums?
All we've gotten are videos from concerts...
Even other older bands like Whitesnake, Mr. Big, Winger, Jon Waite...
They have all done actual videos and, even though they are not all being
heavily rotated on the video networks, at least they took a staab at it.

I think VH1 could work Journey into their rotation if the song was right
and got at least some push from the record company or WALMART :)

Anyone know why the band has completely left this avenue behind?

... the "wrinkle-removal lens" would render the video too blurry?

To me, videos are like flushing money down the toilet. Who's gonna play videos from Journey or any of the bands you mentioned. This is not a slam on any of them, but nobody plays videos anymore. Lady Gaga gets very little airplay on her videos and she is the biggest thing out there. The medium is dead.

Aside from all the jokes and slams,
does anyone really know why?

I know "dinosaur rock" doesn't get the airplay it deserves but,
with an entity like Walmart behind it, if they chose to promote more,
why couldn't these gus get some rotation on channels like VH1?

IMHO, the only reason bands ever made videos, was to help get their faces and imagery of the band out to the mass public who were hearing those same voices on the radio. The 80's bands like Journey aren't getting radio play anymore with newer material, and they'd basically just be throwing the $25000 to $50000 out the window to make a video. Wouldn't make much sense really, at this stage to make any. I believe that most people who buy their albums now are already fans, or they hear the name on Glee, Soprano's, etc... and they just go buy an album or download it.

Just my take on it, but I'm pretty sure that's why.

A lot of bands aren't doing videos for VH1/MTV play anymore, they are doing them more for accompanying dvds and youtube. So many cds come with bonus dvds now that usually include footage and song videos. Youtube is huge when it comes to video exposure, Lady Gaga's vids have probably more hits on youtube then have ever even seen her vid on a music channel.

Hell even MB have 334000 hits on a video that has only been out a couple months, and that's only one copy of the vid on YT. And before anybody even goes there, no, 300000 of them aren't from me, I have the dvd.

 Slucero, wrinkles are no excuse, Sheehan isn't exactly wrinkle free either.....so no excuse you can still make a badass video. Bahaha love reading the comments under the videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHGv5FCS2j8

Back when artists had deals with labels videos were one of the necessary marketing tools used to create awareness about artists, and there were channels dedicated to playing them.

Thats no longer the case...

ALso - Journey is not Katy Perry or Kings of Leon... and the niche they fill is much smaller now... so the expense is most likely not worth it... especially considering how much they make now per units sold vs. when they were beholden to a label...

Holy SHIT Deb... you are the ONLY person I know that can turn ANY FUCKING CONVERSATION into a discussion about JSS, or MR Big. WTH??? We could be talking about turbine engines, and you'd then go on discussing how EM's first car had a turbine engine. You are FREAKING ME OUT LADY!!!

I apologize Deb,

I was just messing with you about your post, but after I re-read it, it did seem a pretty harsh. You're still my Boo girl! DAMN I'm moody today. Sorry again...

No problem Jimbo. When discussing something on here, I DO tend to use them as an example more times than not, just cuz it's what I know. Well, that, and the fact that they are monstrously talented musicians. :P

It's the expense...from what I have been told. Producing an MTV style video is prohibitively expensive.

Agreed. Too much expense for a minimal return.

But wouldn't "Journey" have more money to do a video, than some of the bands Carl mentioned?

maybe no airplay on tv, but YouTube? Different story.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

In the mornings, VH1 plays videos for several hours. I have seen videos for the Goo Goo Dolls and Bon Jovi every time they release a new song from new albums. Obviously they have more of a draw for the younger generation?

You know, I really think these guys could have a hit if they
did something epic for "City of Hope". Cain recently said the
song was inspired by their visit to Manilla...

We know they have a ton of footage from that trip
since they teased us with this documentary that hasn't seen the light of day yet.
Use some of that footage.

Take a hint from the movie "Armageddon" and the scenes
towards the end when the President is giving his speech, with people crowded
around their TVs and radios, looking to the skies, looking for some hope...
inter-mingle clips of the band performing the song...

There are A LOT of songs out there that, if it were not for some very "visually stimulating" videos,
they never would have been the hits they were.

Take a chance, guys... Make something EPIC...

Just briefly listening to the words, and knowing the entire country is
still spiraling from this recession, this song
could be an anthem for just about any city in America...

I just think it is an opportunity wasted.
But, I have said before that maybe these guys really don't care about
radio and hits anymore.
