Rush is a different animal, as they have about 3 songs that casual fans know. Their audience is made up predominantly of fans of their entire catalog. If their catalog had been stronger and had commercial appeal, they would probably be held hostage just like Journey is. Heart plays for free at fests and opened for Journey, so perhaps they should start caring! Queensyche ... I'm not familiar enough with them to comment.

you are wrong in at least one area, it IS Journey's fault. If Journey played a more diverse setlist, people wouldn't have the excuse of 'play something I know'...they would know more songs.

All that would do is cut their attendance numbers. You're not understanding the fact that these people grew up with these songs on the radio and that's why they want to hear them. It has nothing to do with Journey's set list not being diverse enough.

I disagree...I'd be tired of going to the SAME show every year. Same setlist within ONE of TWO songs. Nothing like catering to Jim and Joanie casual, who talk through the entire show, reliving how they fucked in the back seat of Johnny's 1980 Plymouth Fury to LTS, whilst downing their 11th $8 beer....THAT'S what they hope for. What's in it for the REAL fan? SP is already gone, so you're really scraping for a reason to go see this debacle. Friends would be the only reason I attend this year....

Actually this time I gotta give them credit, didn't they play like 5 songs or so from the new album? Beats the couple that are usually thrown in with the DD. Good on them. And there are periodic surprises, but you'll never see what you're suggested (other than the Generations tour). They just have too many popular songs to choose from and playing 5 new ones limits flexibility. Again ... they've got it right.

There's nothing like being lazy and only learning 20 of YOUR OWN songs.

Just off the top of my head I'm guessing that Arnel has sung over 40 Journey songs.

I'm sure he has....but they play the same songs night after night. The dirty dozen plus maybe 6 extra songs. They don't play enough of their songs to actually be diverse. Like I stated earlier, Europe got Edge of the Blade in '09...why? There's a difference between 'play something I know', and 'I'm tired of hearing that song'...fans want it both ways. Sorry, can't have it. Play something I know = song I've heard 5,000X since 1981.

By your own songs, I mean Journey as a whole...not just Arnel. I doubt Neal could rail off Rubicon right now.

They should play an entire album,then sprinkle in the hits....Frontiers + 4 new songs, 2 from Revelation, + 5 other tracks....then switch things up and play most of Arrival + extras....then Escapes deep cuts + extras....learn to switch things up. Always play the new release songs, of course...just stop being predictable and stale....I'd love to see them throw in(meaning compose) an epic instrumental and play that in concert. Not something short like Departure, or Majestic....something like 6 minutes +.....

You think Queensryche fans were whining that they were going to play Operation: Mindcrime in it's entirety in concert? Or Heart fans bitching about all of Dreamboat Annie? and God Forbid RUSH plays all of Moving Pictures(they did)....

Rush and Queensryche draw a very different type of audience than Journey. The people who go to Rush/Queensryche concerts are into the music. The vast majority of attendees of a Journey concert want to hear what they heard at their senior prom, etc.

So only HALF the songs are nostalgic songs. and 3 less than are actually on the GH package. Also, they chose 5 non-GH songs to play. Which proves they will play songs not on GH. What's the harm in switching to a new set of 5 Non-GH songs? They don't play these for the casuals.

LOL, that soooo applies to me. Always find myself singing along to MB on my IPOD. It isn't going to matter what they all throw on the setlist, I'll be the dork in the crowd who knows the words to every damn one of them.

Because they can't. It's like trying to get across town in rush hour traffic. You can't. But wait til 3:30 in the morning and you can by DEFAULT. Journey would need no one releasing an album that week, and the help of everyone buying it at the same time to accomplish a top 20.
