Imagine if Foreigner decided they were just going to play new tracks off of their last album and stay away from the hits,; they wouldn't be on the tour very long at all. It's a team effort to maximize profit and that is what they will all be doing. It WILL be promoted as great AOR package who will be playing all of their top hits of the '80s. So that is what they will do.

What's in it for the REAL fan? SP is already gone, so you're really scraping for a reason to go see this debacle. Friends would be the only reason I attend this year....

Again, look at my setlist...I never once said they should only play newer material....especially when that newer material is horrendous. And like I stated in, yet, another post - Rush played NINE new songs on the Snakes & Arrows tour....so...so much for that theory. Journey just can't draw anymore without selling out, and compromising big time....

There's simply no demand for the songs you speak of. Makes no sense to play songs off of Arrival, other than Higher Place and some of the other ridiculous suggestions you've made. And there are periodic surprises, but you'll never see what you're suggested (other than the Generations tour). They just have too many popular songs to choose from and playing 5 new ones limits flexibility. Again ... they've got it right.

This isn't their 3rd album, Dan....they shouldn't worry about placating to the casuals anymore. How about throwing the die hards a bone after the egregious fuckups Neal has perpetrated...I'm thinking SP jettisoned at the right time, cutting his loses....AGAIN, they have 10-12 popular songs, while playing 22 a night. Add your obligatory(debatable) 5 new tracks, and that still leaves 5-7 spots for deeper cuts....i hardly think fans will care if they play 7 lesser-known songs out of 22...besides, who cares if they run for the bathroom/beer garden - the tickets have been sold.....

This industry is all about repeat business and what you're suggesting will lead to plummeting ticket sales. And they have 19 Top 40 songs, so your math is a little fuzzy.

Ok....who mentioned those songs?

I remember people asking if it was a new song. I replied, "No, just a shitty one."

Just off the top of my head I'm guessing that Arnel has sung over 40 Journey songs.
I'm sure he has....but they play the same songs night after night. The dirty dozen plus maybe 6 extra songs. They don't play enough of their songs to actually be diverse. Like I stated earlier, Europe got Edge of the Blade in '09...why? There's a difference between 'play something I know', and 'I'm tired of hearing that song'...fans want it both ways. Sorry, can't have it. Play something I know = song I've heard 5,000X since 1981.
By your own songs, I mean Journey as a whole...not just Arnel. I doubt Neal could rail off Rubicon right now.
They should play an entire album, then sprinkle in the hits....Frontiers + 4 new songs, 2 from Revelation, + 5 other tracks....then switch things up and play most of Arrival + extras....then Escapes deep cuts + extras....learn to switch things up. Always play the new release songs, of course...just stop being predictable and stale....I'd love to see them throw in(meaning compose) an epic instrumental and play that in concert. Not something short like Departure, or Majestic....something like 6 minutes +.....
You think Queensryche fans were whining that they were going to play Operation: Mindcrime in it's entirety in concert? Or Heart fans bitching about all of Dreamboat Annie? and God Forbid RUSH plays all of Moving Pictures(they did)....
Don wrote:They're not a concept or heavy metal band where they have diehards knowing every song; they're a pop rock band marketed towards people who don't listen to new music beyond what they hear on the radio, just like REO, Stx, Foreigner and a bunch of other AOR acts. Comparing their fanbase to Rush, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, etc. where fans knows every song on every album by heart is ridiculous. From 1980 onward Journey has been custom built for a casual fan base. You can't make them something they're not anymore.

11 songs from GH. There are actually 14 songs on that album.
5 songs that aren't on the GH album.
5 songs from Eclipse
1 song from Revelation
So only HALF the songs are nostalgic songs. and 3 less than are actually on the GH package. Also, they chose 5 non-GH songs to play. Which proves they will play songs not on GH. What's the harm in switching to a new set of 5 Non-GH songs? They don't play these for the casuals.
If it helps, at all, I don't think AP could ever pull off S&S!!S2M wrote:I give up....

Rush is a different animal, as they have about 3 songs that casual fans know. Their audience is made up predominantly of fans of their entire catalog. If their catalog had been stronger and had commercial appeal, they would probably be held hostage just like Journey is. Heart plays for free at fests and opened for Journey, so perhaps they should start caring! Queensyche ... I'm not familiar enough with them to comment.S2M wrote:....which leads me to believe Journey isn't in their league.
Journey laps Heart and Queensryche combined, but Rush is probably a bigger draw than Journey in the U.S.

All that would do is cut their attendance numbers. You're not understanding the fact that these people grew up with these songs on the radio and that's why they want to hear them. It has nothing to do with Journey's set list not being diverse enough.

Man there are alot of negative people that dont even think Journey can pull off at least a top 20 album!
