HELP ME UNDERSTAND?

Postby journeykitty » Mon Mar 21, 2011 3:28 am

I haven't posted in a long while because I am just not "into" this band anymore. Can those of you that are help me understand the attraction? Are you fans from the past when Journey was Journey and at the height of their career, are you new fans? Again, I am trying but just need help? :?

I see you were a member here during the lipping? Is that when your Journey ended?

There are new fans who really aren't familiar with the SP fronted Journey, other than what they have heard on the radio, parent's cds, etc.

The concert attendance is undeniable - they are still having success.

Different fans still love the band for different reasons. They're still a great group of musicians. I'm a huge Neal fan and love Arnel's vocals, and love the whole band. Deen rocks. Jon is a great musician. I still love to hear Journey music live from this band. And I love hearing new music from them. Turn Down the World Tonight is one of my favorite songs by Journey in any incarnation.

But does it really matter the attraction if you aren't into them anymore? I'm sure SP-only fans would have asked the same question of you back in the SA era since you were a fan of SA, but they just don't get it. (To me, Arrival is one of the best Journey albums ever, but he could be lackluster on some of the older material for sure live. Lack of powerful vocals). They probably didn't get the attraction you had. In the end, it's all subjective.

After the fiasco of Tapegate, my fan-worship will never reach the Heaven's Gate-like levels it once was. However, I haven't been this excited for a new J album prolly since Arrival. Until Schon fucks up again, I'm def. back on-board.

^^^^This sums it up pretty well.

This is a talented bunch of musicians, that produce music I enjoy. It really shouldn't need to go further than that. I will also add that Neal Schon's guitar speaks to me unlike any other. I found music I enjoy in every incarnation of this band. From pre-Perry, Perry/Rollie, Perry/Cain, Augeri, JSS (live), and now with Pineda. Is it all the same, or does it all hold the same meaning for me. Probably not, but it is all good and enjoyable to me.

It's hard to put into words....Idol Worship of the highest order....LOL...There was one girl "lusting" over what Steve was wearing at a show and was chastised for being disrespectful to Lydia (Steve's wife) and whatnot...They are worse than Perryloons, JSS, and Arnel fans combined.

There was one 1woman (who sometimes posts here) who ended a friendship with another 2woman simply because 2woman decided she liked JSS
and was going to stay on with Journey...I saw the e-mail and was unreal...

Stupid stuff like that.

I met a good friend back in 1993. At that time she was a huge Journey fan, and of course I was too. In fact, we planned to see Steve Perry during his FTLOSM tour. That fell through for various reason...We traded a lot of music back and forth, Journey related and not. She was a great friend.

We ended up losing contact in the late 90's...just as the Perry/Augeri thing was happening. We reconnected again through Facebook and talk often, have lunch once in a while...and we are even better friends then we were back then. I still forward her various Journey related news and such...the last thing we talked about was my telling her about Def Lep/Heart coming to town...and about the Journey album and tour.

Her response was that she was so over Journey that she had no interest in the album/tour. But, Def Lep/Heart....now that is something she doesn't want to miss...especially Heart.

Now, understand, this is from somebody who had JRNYFAN license places, and was a big a fan as anybody on this, or any other, forum. Nowadays, she just doesn't care. I'm sure she thinks that it's kinda neat in a nostalgic kinda way to see DSB in some movie or whatever. I just think she has no respect for the bands decisions since 1995, or their musical choices. She once told me that she has to have some respect for an artist on a personal level to REALLY appreciate what they do...and I think she has lost that respect for Journey.

I think people 'hold on to their fandom because they ignore all the BS that surrounds the band. All they care about is getting some new music, or the buzz of a concert...and of course I'm sure most of us do get a bit of a kick of their favorite band from 30yrs ago is still around making new music and touring.

Neither is a bad thing, IMO. It takes all types.

I must fall into the second category. I don't think I'd be a fan of a lot of musicians if I took everything they did personal. You just hear more about it these days than 20-30 years ago. It's nice to know that the members of favorite band x are a bunch of good people, but I suspect many are not, and that doesn't affect anything in regards to the music. Never met 99% of them, and really don't care to. Don't care where they live, what their hobbies are, or anything else. All that matters is if they put out good albums and have a good live show. Nothing more, nothing less. Just not sure why it matters to others.

Rock n Roll bands were never meant to be society's role models. My view is similar to yours.

This type of behavior is not restricted to rock star/musician fans ...we hear/read
about it all the time. The only reason you're getting a huge taste of it is because
you're interested in the band as a regular fan.

What was in there?

It's hard to put into words....Idol Worship of the highest order....LOL...There was one girl "lusting" over what Steve was wearing at a show and was chastised for being disrespectful to Lydia (Steve's wife) and whatnot...They are worse than Perryloons, JSS, and Arnel fans combined.

There was one 1woman (who sometimes posts here) who ended a friendship with another 2woman simply because 2woman decided she liked JSS
and was going to stay on with Journey...I saw the e-mail and was unreal...

Stupid stuff like that.

Oh, please Perry fans started a fanzine specifically to write fanfic dedicated Perry's Portuguese sausage...so don't try to convince me that one is worse then the other....and when middle aged women group up in cliques like this, soap opera BS always happens.

Are you fans from the past when Journey was Journey and at the height of their career, are you new fans? Again, I am trying but just need help? :?

I've been a huge Journey fan since 1981. I was 9 years old at the time that Escape was released. No pun intended.

I have never at any time lost any interest in Journey. There's only one other band that I like at the same level as Journey. Journey blow-away almost any other band out there. The level of musicianship, lyrical content, singing, there are so few bands that can compete in any way with Journey.

Something I just don't understand is why there are so many people on this forum that act like the Journey guys are the epitome of evil.

I've got news for them, Journey are no worse morally speaking than most bands. In fact, IMO, their not as bad as most. I certainly don't agree with everything that they do, but Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon, Steve Perry and the rest are not the devil.

I think Jana said it best. I think the level of fandom has a lot to do with whichever member holds(held) our passion. Of course, they still create good music. Of course, we like the drama. That’s why we’ll always stay connected.

I don’t think anyone is holding the band to any high ideal. It’s just that when your passion for someone(something) is gone…well, there isn’t that emotional investment.

And, as long as we keep buying their records, the J-Boys couldn’t care less who loves them…hates them…or just plain indifferent  .
