Lawrence Gowan- Amazing performance

Postby G.I.Jim » Thu Apr 21, 2011 9:33 pm

To be fair, after my Dennis post, I've got to balance it out with this. Gowan is a great songwriter in his own right, and this is the performance of his lifetime!

Gowan rules....I have all his solo albums. Amazoing songwriter. Glad he is doing well., but pissed there has been no solo album for years. Lost Brotherhood is killer and They Call Me Larry is a masterpiece.

Dude looks and sings like Sir Paul....dude can bring it. on CYCLORAMA.....as for singing DDY'S stuff....it's god-awful. Except for babyblue who has some unhealthy fatal attraction to ole Leisure Suit larry, and Drew, that likes ANYTHING...I can't believe anyone likes this stuff with him bastardizing these Styx songs...

Honestly, do they think we are stupid? Styx kicked Dennis out so they could have more control of 'their' band. Tommy wasn't even around at the beginning(a la Jon Cain)....I guess JY is the Neal of the group. And they wanted to rock out more. But just like Journey 86'd JSS so they could keep going with that legacy sound, that they only kept for ONE album, just like Styx only has ONE album with new material with GowanHome - it's a bait and switch. Neither group is doing what they originally said they were going to do....if you are only going to tour the D12, why not bring Dennis back? He's not keeping you from writing rocking songs - hell, you ain't writing at all.

These bands are sad.

Some of us don't let idealized, largely invented, remembrances of the past prevent our enjoyment of the present.

That's not it at all...VERY few subsitutes do the material justice. Gowan isn't one of them. Arnel is better at Journey stuff. I can see putting up with it, but to sing it's praises - that's where I get confused. It's more a question of calling these bands out for the decisions they make under false pretenses. Styx got rid of Dennis so they could get rid of the balladeer. One original album later, and they are back where they started....they're not writing non-ballads - they aren't writing anything at all....so that tells me they are liars. Just like Journey. Deen's a junkie/alcoholic....if Jeff said something to that effect, good on him. But don't lie and say that Jeff wasn't a good fit for the band - Neal hired him for a reason....LIES.

There's nothing largely invented here, Linda....you're better than that. :?

He was NOT a good fit for the band, otherwise he'd be there.
As for Deen- it's his business. Journey doesn't seem to be languishing (as Styx has definitely done). They seem to be using all the momentum brought by Arnel and Glee (god, did I just friggin' say that????), etc. Good on them for doing that. Their new album will not satisfy the Perry diehards. Nothing will other than Perry coming out of retirement. It'll happen any day...
okay... WAIT AND SEE.

Now?

Okay...

Now?

I don't know WHAT the hell Styx is doing. To not follow up Cyclo (loved it!) with another original album is just lame. Gowan does okay with the Dennis stuff and their tours show that they're doing something right. He's definitely not as good as Dennis in the voice department. He's twice the entertainer Dennis is though and I also think he's the better player- my opinion. However, Dennis did also have a lot of vision- though some of it was questionable (Kilroy). Styx got rid of Dennis to rock and got Burtnik & Gowan to replace Dennis' writing. Burtnik left. VERY sad day as he was a major writer and truth be told, to have more JY tracks on an album than Burtnik tracks blew and blew hard. JY should get one song per album. He's Styx's Ringo. Burtnik is as good as Shaw in the vocal department and writing department. They should've kept him happy.

Now, they are just aimless. Too bad.

Cyclo was great. Really a shame they've done nothing in ... has it been 10 years since Cyclo? Wow. EDIT: Nevermind, been 8 years. Still though... wow.

Thanks for posting the link, Jim.

I have seen Styx a few times with LG. I saw them twice on their own and a few times when they were on tour with Boston in 2008. Never saw Styx with DDY, but I think LG does a pretty good job with Styx. Never saw Glen with Styx, but did see him just over a year ago with The Orchestra in Atlantic City.

Never heard any solo Gowan stuff before, but this song is great and I have listened to it a few dozen times. I can see why you like it so much. Pretty powerful song. I found the original Gowan version, and it has an extremely dated sound, but the arrangement that Styx has done brings a much more current feel to it. It's strange that this arrangement leaves the first few lines of the first verse out.

I thought Styx was great with LG and will go back and see them any time they are in the area. They should add this to their regular set list. Would probably help in establishing LG as the talented musician he is, rather than the perception people have of him being a low-grade DDY replacement, which he is not. Really showcases his strengths as a songwriter, keyboardist, and singer in a context where people can't say he's trying too hard to sing or play like DDY.

I, too, wish they would write and record full albums of new stuff rather than putting out re-records with scattered new material.

Very cool Joe! I'm glad you liked it. This really is an amazing performance, and it's a very powerful song. You really owe it to yourself to check out the Cyclorama album. It has some great tunes, and is great if you don't go into it trying to hear Dennis. Some classics on there for sure! Gowan sounds great on "fields Of The Brave". I really dug some of Tommy's songs on there too.

It's his natural vibrato, and can't be helped. His voice works on songs like this, but in my opinion, doesn't sound good at ALL on Dennis's songs.
