Bin Laden Dead!!!!!!

General Intelligent Discussion & One Thread About That Buttknuckle

I said it before and I'll say it again. Whatever your stance is on the merits of releasing or not releasing the photos, this whole incident was handled with all the finesse of a serial rapist and all the political acumen of a KKK member deciding to run for a seat in a Harlem, NY congressional district.

This is an absolute embarrassment that severely dampens what should have been a resounding display of courage and triumph for our country, and it goes for both sides of the aisle. Allow me:

Republican House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said earlier in the day that the Obama administration should not release the gruesome post-mortem images, saying it could complicate the job for American troops overseas. Rogers told CBS News he has seen a post-mortem photo.

"The risks of release outweigh the benefits," Rogers said. "Conspiracy theorists around the world will just claim the photos are doctored anyway, and there is a real risk that releasing the photos will only serve to inflame public opinion in the Middle East."

"Imagine how the American people would react if Al Qaeda killed one of our troops or military leaders, and put photos of the body on the internet," Rogers continued. "Osama bin Laden is not a trophy - he is dead and let's now focus on continuing the fight until Al Qaida has been eliminated."

This bumbling statement is flawed on so many levels it's not even funny.

1. Public opinion in the Middle East is what it is about America. Those who hate us are going to continue hating, and those who are moderate will not be swayed by a picture of a deposed mass murderer. The innocents over there have seen more violence firsthand than most of us here can ever imagine seeing.

2. Conspiracy theorists WILL have their theories from now til all eternity. That's fine. They will probably be unemployed people who spend all their time on internet boards deriding the country, government, etc anyway. That doesn't mean we should let these putative conspiracy theorists force us to appear to be cowering at the possibility of retaliation by a couple of smelly bearded bozos with RPGs and AK47s.

3. No need to imagine how "American people would react" - we've seen photos and VIDEO of our own citizens (let alone soldiers) jumping out of gigantic buildings, being beheaded, and in various states of violent injury/death all at the hands of these fucks and this dead fuck in particular.

4. Analogizing the posting of bin Laden's domepieced head to the posting of a dead soldier or "military leader" is an insult to all soldiers. He was not a soldier, and he was certainly no military leader. He was a criminal, a mass murderer, and an illegitimate combatant. He's not entitled to any special respect.

And now it begins. 8 death scene photos have been sold to Reuters by an anonymous public official. 3 different men, none of whom are bin Laden, are shown in various states of complete ownage. You can see how precise the shots that iced these dudes were. What a fine testament to the skill of the commandos who executed the mission.

Looks like the government has forgotten the cardinal lesson of the Internet age: You can't keep this shit from the public.

I guess I should say these are graphic so click at your own risk, but it's just some blood and some dead terrorists. Didn't bother me at all.

The only great things about the no-photo-release is how it's got FactBender all worked up and his blood boiling like a fryer at KFC  ;)

I'm with you. Had it been a desolate tribal region I could believe them, but he was in in a fucking military village! Why would he surround himself with military people, most of whom are for more prone to spot something and/or someone out of place? Like a 6 foot 5 Arab living in a compound with no cable or phone, that burns it's trash. Oh, he also happens to be the most wanted person in the world.

Sounds like Panetta is trying to make Obama look bad. There's no way possible, if everything that's been reported by the media is true, with the amount of briefings going on right now, that these guys wouldn't be on the same page. I'm guessing that there are vast differences between Obama and SOS Clinton, and that Panetta is siding with Clinton. Either that or he's in the early stages of Alzheimer's.

He'll demand a proper Muslim burial with a fresh clean washed body
But he won’t allow Americans to view a photo of a dead terrorist.

No matter WHAT Obama does, you have a problem with it.

If he was still alive don't we think that he would have released a video film of himself holding up today's newspaper to prove the date etc?

And releasing a photograph of a dead body isn't proof. Ask Behshad and Yulog and all of our photoshop wizards.

Releasing a photo of a dead guy is just ghoulish.

We don't need to see that.

The DNA should be sufficient.

But I wish they'd make their minds up about what actually happened when they took him down.
All these changes of story are not doing them any favours.
In fact they are making non conspiracy theorists think conspiracy and cover-ups!

No one is saying he isnt dead. But what if he died years ago !? The photo will prove that it happened Last Sunday. And there are photoshopped pictures floating on the internet already, but experts can ALWAYS tell the difference between a real pic and a fake photoshopped one ;)

Right, but even if it's proved to be a real photo, how would they prove that it was taken on Sunday and not 5 years ago?

(I'm not one of the conspiracy peeps, just saying, that's the first thing they'd say, "that could have been taken 5 years ago..." ya know?)

And actually, some are saying he isn't dead... the Taliban said it right away that they didn't believe it.

I would have thought they WOULD have kept it secret long enough to set up and catch all the bad guys they learned about from the seized computers. Now they know their outed. This makes no sense. They should have given our guys a headstart on the rest of them.

I'm not going to judge as long as there are not political motivations behind the actions, but I am a bit concerned about the changing stories. Why did they release info that was not confirmed in the first place? It's not making them look very good. The Bush administration would have been crucified for this. The stuttering and stammering and changing stories would have been plastered on news broadcasts and Lettermen.

It makes me sick how FOX and others immediately talk about a "bounce" in Obama's approval or disapproval rating during a time like this. Who gives a shit. This constant campaign bullshit is the reason our country is in the tank. Same goes at the state level. Every move (or vote) is political and rarely for the good of the country or state.

Who knows.

They are saying it over here.

And wanting to see the photographic 'evidence' before they believe he's dead.

I believe he's dead.

What I'm waiting to find out is how Pakistan are going to get out of the sticky position they are now in.
Even if he WAS living in that compound right under their noses without the Top Brass knowing, nobody will ever trust them again.

An asinine statement if I ever saw one.

Conspiracy theorists abound regardless of who is in office. I'm on record as saying I totally believe he's dead, but that the handling of this whole thing has been completely embarrassing. That includes the rationales they've given for some of these decisions, the blundering press conferences, and the appearance that people aren't on the same page across the administration. That also includes some of the pitiful things republicans have said in rationalizing the non-release of the photos. This whole thing has quickly soured in my eyes, and it doesn't have anything to do with how the ragheads view bin laden's death.
