R I P Claude Choules - a true War hero. Aged 110.

Yes, the last veteran of the first world war has passed away in his sleep aged 110.

I think that while we are thinking about Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda and terrorist bombs and killings we should spare a thought for this wonderful old gentleman who went through experiences we can only imagine.

And I think we should all raise a glass a make a toast to him and all of those others who had to live through that war.

We think we have it tough nowadays, but compared to these brave blokes, we have it easy.

Rest In Peace Mr Choules.

I salute you.

Such a globetrotter. Beer is always supposed to be served chilled.

Well, if he's a Harlem Globetrotter, he'll probably be sippin' Crown Royal instead.

Is Parfait only visible to you now? I wonder how he has a clue how beer is supposed to be served, when according to him, it's trashy to drink beer. Wine is the drink of the pretentious elite. Or is that just a rule he has for women.

When you think of the battles these guys where in, not the war as a whole but single battles where more men died then did in the entire Vietnam war, unbelievable. To live through the invention of Flight to reaching the moon, from the only media being radio and black and white news reels at the movie house to now having the internet and the whole world in a monitor. That's a life.

No kidding.

And in a lot of ways, the lack of technology back then probably made war even more brutal and gruesome. Sure, today, we have weapons and vehicles that are capable of destruction on a scale unheard of back in those days. But at the same time, there were probably a lot more gruesome wounds, battles, and all that given the state of medical care, the weapons involved etc.

Read any report or book about The Somme and it will really make you sit and think.

I have such a respect for these gentlemen.

And I always remember Harry Patch's words about War.
He said that in the end the Top Brass got round a table and talked to end the War. Why couldn't they have done that in the first place.

A wise old gentleman.

Just imagine having any one of these guys as your Grandfather.

Something to be really proud of.

Only two known survivors of the great war left now...

This was from rehearsals. When you've been around as along as Claude has, when it's time for the curtain to come down you want to make sure you do it right. 8)
