One listen so far, and while I appreciate the musicianship...I don't like this record very much. As of right now, the only one I'm going to add to my vast iPod Journey mix is "Chain of Love." Sonically brilliant...musically, very disappointing. I far prefer Revelation.

It's never been more abundantly clear what the missing ingredient is. Say what you want to about Perry - the man knew how to write a beautiful melody and (often) compelling lyrics. With a few exceptions - most notably those tunes on Arrival co-written by Jack Blades - that melodic penchant has been missing since TBF.

Oh, well. Life goes on. I'll be going to at least 3 shows - Charlotte, Raleigh, and Atlanta.

I disagree. I hear it on several "Revelation" songs and "Eclipse" as well. Lyrically-speaking, I think they were considerably better with Perry in the band but not musically...at all.

You would never see an entire album of brilliance like this if Perry was still in the fold, otherwise we would have saw this album a long time ago.

Drop D Tuning explained

Great ... I just figured out how to change the cities on my iPhone4 weather app and now you hit me with this technical shit?!? You bastard!

Well, when you listen to City of Hope, and each time Neal runs down the scale at the end of the verse, and the guitar sounds a bit lower than normal on the last note of that run, I think it's because he has his lower E string tuned down to a D. I know Van Halen has done it, and I'm sure a myriad of other bands do it, but it just give the guitar a really nasty, ballsy sound, and his sure has that in that song at that point.

Rick: No. I don't believe the main rhythm guitar is in drop D. To my ears, it's just your standard chunky E5 power chord riff. I'll have to double check on my guitar tomorrow though. It's a little late to be jamming (even though Dan, my buds, and I once had a drunken, post-Frontiers concert jam session at 4 AM here one time... can't imagine that pleased my neighbors downstairs).

Compare the City of Hope rhythm sound to that of Higher Place's chorus, which IS in Drop D, and I think you'll hear Higher Place is lower.

... the overall recording and mastering on this record is par for the course for 2011. Nice and clear with a great mix but just mastered too damn loud like everything else now.

LD, I *thought* I had found a few errors with the mixing and a skip, but the gentleman that mixed the album, David Kalmusky, sent me this explanation. I think it's impressive as hell, to say the least. It really gets into some of what you're talking about. And I think the loudness problem you're having is because concerts ARE loud. Explanation:

"We did NOT "Chop up" and "Perfect" this record, Quantizing, editing, Auto Tuning, Fixing performance on the computer..... that was not part of the agenda of this record.

This record, is as human as you can possibly make a record these days, and if we put it under the microscope, there are lots of pick noises, moments where it might rush a bit, and lay back a bit, Arnel's vocal may crack a little, or fall naturally off Pitch... It's part of the experience the Band, and Kevin want you to have with this record. to really hear these guys, and their musicianship. Like a concert, or an experience...It's full of alot of really cool "Honest" musical moments, that really show you just how great these guys are. There's nothing "Clinical" about this record, So... it's not bound to be "Perfect."

Excellent info. My biggest complaint is that Dave doesn't have good use of the English language. As a professional he should realize it's a lot, not alot like he has it :)

Based on my first listen yesterday Arnel sounds NOTHING like Steve Perry.

I TRULY loved Revelation and ALL of the new songs on it. 'What I Needed', & 'Turn Down The World Tonight' are two of my all time favorite Journey songs. On Revelation Arnel sounded and sung damn near as good as Perry.

Based on ONE listen I do NOT get that vibe off of Eclipse. I will listen many many more times and I hope some of the songs & the entire CD grow on me. As of now for me it is not even close to the new disc off of Revelation.

P.S. How about seeing Tom Jones as a black man last night on Idol. When did he become black??

Another observation after a few more days spent with this album that I just posted in another thread here:

A LOT of Eclipse suffers from a very strange malady indeed: The verses actually are quite catchy compared to the choruses. For instance, City of Hope is a FANTASTIC song until the chorus itself hits and the entire song loses steam. That verse really soars after that cool intro, then it just dies. Strange. Likewise, even my co-favorite song on the album, Anything is Possible, suffers from this: The verses actually sound catchier than the chorus! The "when you shoot for the moon... and you miss your mark" part coupled with Neal's little riffing just sounds cooler than the chorus, which has a few too many words that prevent it from being as catchy and smooth as it should be.

I still like the album, just an observation.

No, but I am LMAO!!
I was just discussing this w/someone ...was he always?!?!

in re: to your review ...I've never thought ap sounded like sp, he
was always missing the soulfulness in his delivery. I'm quite
the reverse ...Revelation "blah" ... I'm feeling more respect
for Eclipse because I'm hearing the real AP (I think) ...he
still lacks soulfulness~richness, but I'm loving the risk they took here!!
Still trying to determine just what I do and do not like!!

Well, I got a chance to really "ingest" this album yesterday, listening to it three times straight through,
while flying from SLC to Philly...
First off, let me echo what some others have stated: You NEED to listen to this album, in its entirety,
through a good set of headphones (I have Bose QC2's)!!! Holy Shit, there is so much going on!!!
Everyone has alread talked about the layer upon layer upon layer of Neal's fret work all over this album, but
enough can not be stated about Cain's work here. There was a lot of concern, due to comments Cain himself made in recent
interviews, that all of Cain's keyboard work would be lost in the mix. That is SO far from the truth. The work Cain does with
the piano, strings, and the various pads and beds throughout this album are truly what make these songs come to life.
The textures he paints with the sounds and his fingers are amazing! Deen is a complete beast, knowing when to lay back a bit,
and then hitting you in your gut like a sledge hammer, while Ross does what Ross does... Some people knock Ross, I guess, because
he isn't too flashy with his fingers like you might get from guys like Geddy or Chris Squire of Yes. Yet Ross really stands out on this album, after being lost in the mix
for the past few releases, and his playing defines the Journey sound here, and is remeniscent of his work on all the earlier efforts, to include Escape.

As for Arnel, I have really been on the fence with him. I love his energy in the live setting, but until now I have never really been blown away by his voice.
On Revelation, there seemed to be too much of an emphasis on "trying to capture that Legacy sound". On Eclipse, we truly hear Arnel Pineda and, while he may unwittlngly captured the "Legacy" sound we all miss, he also shows his own brilliance. I will go out on a limb here and say that, IMO, Arnel delivers one of the FINEST vocal performances
EVER to be captured on a Journey recording! Yes, I believe he sounds THAT incredible here.

As for the songs, I can understand people complaining that there are no "Hooks" here if you've only listened to samples or the album once...
But play it through 3-4 times, and I will find it hard to believe that you do not have these songs stuck in your head! When Andrew said that this album would be a "grower", he was dead on! Is it heavy? Absolutely! Hell, there are times that I am reminded of one of my other favorite bands, Dream Theater! There are even some splashes of early Yes that I hear. But i can DISTICNTLY hear ealry Journey influences throughout, whether intentional or not, and it all comes together to be a very powerful, dark, and climactic album!

This album is going to get A LOT of play out of me!
Welcome to Terminus... You hungry?

there is definitely a lot going on! But I wonder if Ross is even playing on it, I know that Neal has played bass on previous albums, at least that is what people say.

I love the album -- think it's some of their best work in a long, long time. But I have to agree with you -- some of the choruses take away from the great verses. One thing I loved about DSB was that you didn't hit the chorus until very far into the song, rather than being beaten over the head with it. Some of these songs would have fared a bit better had they done that, too. Nonetheless, Eclipse is fast becoming one of my favorite CDs that have come out in the past few years. It's just incredible.

Like the train sounding guitar build up in the beginning, DSB picks up a full head of steam before it finally brings home the goods. An unconventional song structure but it comes of brilliant in this instance.

After a week of listening to Eclipse, I think the album is just average at best. If you're a diehard Journey fan , you'll most likely love it and think of it as a masterpiece , but it's nothing spectacular and got boring after a week. Next.

You might be on to something. I am sooo far from sick of the new MB album, it's not even funny. A few songs that I thought were too hard/heavy after the first few listens, I absolutely love now. Like this one..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk3RyGOnegU that I usually skipped over to get to Stranger (one in my sig). I love the musicality on some of the heavy ones more now with every listen. And thought they'd never pull some of them off live, has now become a favorite that definitely doesn't get skipped.

I did not let myself become manipulated by all the hype leading up to this release, therefore, I was pleasantly surprised.
I was all for the rockin’ new direction and I love the danger of the risk!! I wasn’t listening for future classics nor was I
comparing singers …I listened to determine whether I liked this release…or not!! What I heard was a singer coming into his
own and I felt as though I was hearing him for the first time, the way I wish I had heard him to begin with. This is still not
a 100, for me …I don’t like/love everything, there were moments when AP's voice did not jive and there were times I just
simply did not like the friggin song, lyrics, melody, whatever, black, white, Pinoy ...I'm a racist~ it’s shameful!!
But jeeezuz in comparison to the last sleeper, this was very good!! What I loved, I really loved and what I don't
like, I DON'T like!! But, hey, nice to meet you Arnel Pineda ...

EOTM~
I really love this song …AP’s voice is rich, full, incredible!! Neal’s guitar working w/the vox,
not one overpowering the other …beautiful!! Deen’s drumming is the best I’ve heard from him!! As of this
moment this is my fav …but that can and may change. The ahhhahhhahhhhahhh toward the end …sexy!!

COL … Love the intro!!
AP’s vox are rocking here again …love the echoing voice!!
Deen and Neal, again, are incredible … I’m not as put off by the repeated use of state of grace as some,
everything else is flowing and rocking …who said it works w/the song?!? That’s it!!
I love this song so much that the minor thin spot is easily overlooked …oh yes!!

AIP … again, the vox are incredible …Love the melody, the lyrics, NEAL and
The positive, upbeat message …Sooo much better than that WITTW song!!
I really, really like this!!

She’s a Mystery~ I don’t know why I love this song …I love that Arnel sounds
so relaxed and he is owning this song …stand back!! I fell in love with him Raaaahhht here!!
Neal shines, but AP is the star …this could easily turn into my
Fav. There is some harmonizing going on here that I’m loving!!

Resonate ~ I think Arnel shines vocally and Neal is incredible …but I’m not loving this song …It has
Plenty of that Hindu vibe …just, blah!! I felt like it could be a grower w/a little TLC, but by time it was over I was
sick of the word resonate …but a terrific Idea for word of the day!!

Human Feel~ Boring …don’t like it!!

COH~ I like some of this, some I don’t … Love the Guitar intro, don’t like verses, but I love the chorus~~
Sounds like a bunch of straining to get higher and higher, thinness, folks, SKINNY…I’m hearing very little of the
Richness in AP’s vox …but it pops up in the chorus!! Neal’s guitar is the best singer here!! I’m up,
Down, up, down …It’s like an emotional rollercoaster …I not sure about this city!!

Ritual~ Not crazy about Ritual… just too much of that Hindu Vibe?!?!? Can’t pinpoint it yet!!

Tantra~You know how I feel about this song …starts off with a rich voice, concentrating on R-OW-N-D-ING
OW-T THE WORDS as though one is on a stage, in a play, ensuring the audience understands each and every syllable,
I hate that …just beautiful for an animated movie or a play …ROUNDING OUT THOSE
SYLLABLES !! YUK!!!

TWIMC~ Started off friggin awesome, AP sounded incredible, I was loving this … and then the chorus!! I felt a little robbed ...
but there is something about it I like ...i don't know ...do I have to say Yay, Nay now?!? How 'bout I wait!!

Someone~ What does this remind me of?!?! I don't know, but I like it because AP sounds so friggin'
good ... and hey Jon, I missed you!!! I think I heard some Perry in that oooohhohhhohh!!

Venus~Gotta love that!!

Good review. You are not the ass tight snobby bitch I thought you were. Kudos! ;)
Really, I think it was written without bias and you, like everyone else just has some songs you love and
some you don't. Overall, very positive. ....and, what the hell are you doing up so late? :D

Great honest review MG. I find you have the closest ear to mine on this board, LOL obviously......I didn't like Human Feel or Ritual either. But now I'm going to have to go back and have another listen to EOTM and She's A Mystery again.
