I thought it was nicely done! More so, it is always fun to hear the props for Perry at these moments!
Would love to see Perry make a guest appearance, even just in the audience, and have James introduced to him.
Come on Randy.....make that happen!

Randy already tried to get Steve on the show as a guest judge and Perry declined. No one should have to beg the guy. He obviously doesn't want to be near a stage unless he's paying for a ticket.

Wouldnt that pretty much describe 95 percent of America? See. He is like us!
Steve Smith?? You mean the guy who just said he would tour with Journey with Perry as a lead singer? Yea, he sounds really crushed.Saint John wrote:onmyjrny wrote:The reason he gave for not wanting to be a guest judge is that he doesn't feel he has the right to smash someone's dreams by judging them.
Yeah ... ok.I'm sure that Herbie Herbert, Steve Smith and Ross Valory would probably disagree, though.
Maybe, but Perry apparently is not comfortable in that role and it's his life.Besides, constructive criticism is probably the best thing you could give an aspiring artist.
Not sure what that has to do with anything from my original post.Nostrildamus now seems to lives in a little cocoon where no one can judge, confront or do virtually anything without mulling it over for an exponentially longer period of time than a sane person grounded in reason would. And I'm sure the journey of making a decision includes anxiety attacks, second guesses and prescription drugs. And still no decision.

While I don't agree with all of Perry's decisions, they were decisions that ultimately everyone in the band went with, so maybe everyone in the band whould share in the blame there. Unless Perry was giving them all some strange Kool Aide, everyone that was there was responsible for their own actions, including hiring, firing, selling real estate or whatever. I have a hard time believing one person would have so much control over 5 other mega successful human beings.

He said he would be interested in a "one off" tour with the 80's lineup. He merely mentioned Perry because, other than himself, he'd be the only other member needed for a reunion tour! You're completely speculating and almost inferring that he would only do it because of some personal love and admiration fest he has with Perry. Let's just stop and think about how Steve Smith's Journey career ended (twice). Fired before ROR and then had his lineup in the mid-90's aborted by a guy that never intended to tour. My guess, and one much more grounded in reason than yours, is that he has some sense of unfinished business and would be interested in seeing the fans and getting to say goodbye with the band's most popular lineup. And I'm sure he's quite aware that Neal has told Deen that he's Journey's "drummer for life." But a reunion tour could be the lone exception.onmyjrny wrote:I'm sorry, but I don't buy the whole "Steve Perry ruined everything for everyone" that Herbie got everyone to somehow buy into. It's not so much about having control over human beings as it is about having control over touring and the being person that the fans wanted to see/hear singing the songs. It was simply a matter of "You do X or I'm not singing." Leaves the band no other choice, really. He was the band's most recognizable member, a voice in a billion, but he was also an out of control jerk that managed to fire 2 members, change album names and artwork, turn a rock band into the 80's version of Tavares, take a 10 year break for being toast (yet turned around and recorded and tried to release another album ... then toured without the rest of Journey), liquidated real estate, fired the manager, and then got them to reform without ever having any intention on touring, just so he the Rolie/Chalfant lineup couldn't tour. You show me where the other guys wronged him on a similar level, 'cuz i just ain't seeing it. You have to realize that as successful and incredible popular as Journey was, they were only a 10 year live act, and that's because they had one mentally and physically fragile member.onmyjrny wrote:Was that REALLY necessary? Attacking you? I called your opinion stupid. That's nice 'round these parts.
Art Vandelay wrote:Smith was offered to stay with the band after Perry was let go in '98. He declined on his own accord that time, because he wasn't interested in a Perry-less Journey. Sounds like he still has the same sentiments. Get your facts straight, brutha.

I'm not changing any history. The guy said he'd be interested in a Steve Perry-fronted Journey reunion tour. He was lied to and opted out. The name Steve Perry was thrown in there for differentiation from the current lineup and people around here are throwing it around as if he's some fucking Perry lap dog. That's not true.
And he was on retainer ready to step in at a moment's notice a few years back, so your "clusterfuck" argument is null and void. Consider this your cease and desist, concerning that argument.

Show me the proof that he was on retainer. Yeah, I read it here too...from a 'credible source'. I've read a lot of things here. Let me ask you, what time frame was this retainer for? When Soto stepped in or stepped out? Go back to Smith's previous tour schedule, I can guarantee you that whenever it was supposed to be, Smith's own schedule wouldn't allow it, from already scheduled dates and tours. And there ain't no way that he's putting his well developed reputation on the line by canceling scheduled gigs to tour with Journey....whether Journey or anyone else who makes claims about this retainer wants to believe it. If there was a retainer, prove it!

Listen, man, if you're going to play legal eagle and pull out the plausible deniability card by mandating legal documents that I have no way of obtaining, then the conversation is over. But it's very well known that Steve Smith was ready to step in when Deen Castronovo was having problems. Whether you choose to believe that or not is totally up to you, but it's true. There was some deal in place, be it legally or otherwise. I just find that sort of mindset hilarious, but the whole "hip" excuse just gets written in stone. No proof, no crutches, no accounts of seeing him in a hospital. But they "fired" him because he needed more time and they weren't willing to wait. Glad his tour schedule and performances since have cemented that:lol:

ok, if it's so very well known, show me any other site, pick any one other that this message board that gives any inclination that Smith was on retainer. No documents, just another web site that has nothing to do with this board that mentions it. I triple dog dare ya!

Talking about it would only bring to light and beg the question why he was on retainer or in talks to potentially step in. And that's obviously not going to happen. I'm sure that you're smart enough to figure out why.

Sure, because the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy would get into an argument over who buys the Brooklyn Bridge from Santa.
