If these aren't padded already, look for Wal-Mart to add a few more thousand by Thursday. That's why Billboard wouldn't chart Wal-Mart exclusives until the Eagles made a big stink about it.
When you promise artists that you will help them move stock, real numbers get kind of fuzzy when they're lower than expected.

Look for Eclipse to lose some shelf space to Mirrorball this week unless Def Leppard get their own Kiosk.[/quote

And, tell me, what is going to happen to those CD's that are no longer 'on the shelf', as they were replaced by DL?

Like I said, that's why Billboard didn't want to deal with Wal-Mart all those years.
It will be like Garth Brooks.

Attention Wal-Mart Team Members,
This upcoming pay period, you will find a one time ten dollar deduction taken from your check.
You will be compensated however with one copy of our exclusive Journey release, Eclipse.
Enjoy, and thanks for being a team player.

8K? If Journey can't sell more units than Everett makes in a years salary, it's time to go boys.

So, you are saying that is how they pad the numbers? They remove from the shelf and count them as "sold"?

In other words, these CD's are going to be buried in the desert somewhere beside the ET Atari cartridges? They are not even going to try to discount them to cut their losses?

This is getting more pathetic every time I read more about it.

This CD is going to end up selling TOTAL what some of you thought it would do in ONE WEEK. 150,000 is probably where they will be at the end of the year - and that is being generous.

Do you people even know what a kiosk is?

I have NEVER seen a kiosk in a retail outlet selling ONE product - ever. If anybody has, please write about it. Again, IMO, an example of fanboy dreams that never had even the smallest chance of coming true. Wal-Mart isn't going to install a kiosk for Journey, DL, or any other band.

No, I was born yesterday   You've NEVER seen a kiosk in a retail outlet selling ONE product, EVER? Funny, just this weekend I saw one for Coppertone sunscreen, one of many kiosks-selling-one-product I've seen before. I don't know what rock the "retail outlets" you visit are under, but sounds boring

That's called a display...a kiosk is that cart in the middle of the mall 'runway' that sells cheap, knockoff cell phone cases and such....

Actually, if both of you want to get so damn technical, a "kiosk" is a garden area, so there  And in this discussion it's a display too, so shut up  POINT is, Mirrorball WILL outsell Eclipse. 8)

Doesn't make it better. Gaga will outsell BOTH of them by a couple million. Point? Def Leppard is garbage.

My point is numbers always don't tell the story. There is NO way Def Lippard should be closing with Bryan Adams, as there is a HUGE difference in talent between those two bands. Lippard can't stand on the same stage as BA and his band.....but...

Never said it did. It's just fun to jab at that little ridiculous idea that "units sold" is what makes something "good".

Gaga will sell more than Eclipse and Mirrorball combined, and by leaps and bounds I'm sure.

When they did their minor league baseball stadium tour several summers ago, Adams closed the show I attended. He wasn't good that night - 3 ballad encore. 2/3 nobody knew but his hardcore. I found it an odd performance...not if he were doing a solo tour mind you, but when closing for the Lippard.

Here's a point to ponder. Do low sales of Eclipse doom Arnel's documentary? The film makers ran a three month campaign for donations that netted $7,000. They had requested $50,000 to simply start the film editing. Three years on, no money to finish the movie and Journey not really getting any play from their new release, is this film dead?

In hindsight, maybe putting their effort into promoting Eclipse would have been more fruitful.

Later today, we'll have close to official numbers. Expect Wal-Mart to do as they did last week and pull a couple thousand sales out of their ass before the official new Billboard chart on Thursday to move the album up a spot or three.

I had no idea they were that far from a released film. Seems like some sort of deal could have been done to partner with the Eclipse Release since that took a while to create. Lost opportunities  I suppose the film could be released in segments on YouTube or the JRNY website as teasers that work to promote both products but that would take negotiating. Not sure any of the parties are up to doing that

The film makers said they are trying to avoid any financing from Journey so this can be seen as a truly independent film. They were even worried about having trailers that are too long as that might disqualify this 'film' from Academy Award consideration.

At this point, I think releasing the documentary has more to do with the producer/director's own ambitions than it does with Arnel and Journey.

Just let Journey buy the film 'as is' and call it a day already. At least they can use it for promo or something.

Deb, seriously....can you please take off the rose-coloreds. MB hadn't released a cd of original material in TEN FUCKING YEARS. What If... was going to sell just based on the absense. And the rest they will sell on their PAST. Diehards bought it. They ain't culling any new fans to the fold, believe me. I'd like to see the Units sold/Drink Coaster ratio....I'm pretty sure it's around 10/8.

Yep, gotta be that, cuz God forbid it's because it's a good album.  It's been over 15 years since it's been the original lineup. And wrong again on new fans, saw lots of young-uns at the HOB show..........same with if you check out youtubes of the overseas audiences too. Can't tell me 20-somethings aren't new fans...........unless they were listening in-utero back in '91.

There is a good chance that Journey may be out of the top 40 on this upcoming chart.

It's ranked at #49 with 55% of the weekly sales counted.

They need to out gain the 9 acts above them by about 2,000 sales. Wal-Mart added late numbers last week, so we'll have to see if that happens again.

When does it change from
"We're not really concerned with how many albums we sell at this stage of our careers anyway"
to
"We are a bit disappointed with sales because we truly feel that this is one the best records we've done"

Those statements aren't mutually exclusive. It's possible to care less about sales and still be disappointed at the lack of interest by the public when one feels one has a quality record.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Of course.
I'm just confused about the whole exclusivity thing. With iTunes and Amazon selling some form of the product, Maybe Wal-mart didn't feel that it was their responsibility to promo this thing as they did with Revelation.
In my own way of thinking, I would rather have a failure at retail because of the product itself, not because of other reasons, such as lack of promo or late distribution or what not.
Obviously I don't know what the real deal here is and it may truly be, as Monker has stated that people just don't give a shit about new material or a new direction or really anything different from Journey anymore.

I'm only interested in sales when it comes to influencing the odds of Journey releasing another CD, otherwise I couldn't care less.
Journey's members are all, I believe, millionaires and set for life, so why should I care?
But regardless, management and the band definitely fumbled the ball bigtime. If it tanks, I don't have any sympathy for them: Neal and co. should have been making some noise about it.
