Smooth, Deb. Real smooth.

If mine isn't on silent, it's set to buzz. I hate ringtones. And I hate when my phone rings in public because then I'm that asshole with a phone making noise in the tomb-like silence of the dairy section. I tend to ignore all calls I get while I'm out somewhere like that. For one, I don't care for other people hearing me talk on the phone (and I'm sure they feel the same) and another, if it's not a quick 30-second call then I'm going to talk to the person when I can actually talk to them, respectfully, instead of mumbling a bunch of half-focused "uh-huhs" because I'm trying to do something else. I may be the only person under 30 who wishes they didn't need to have a cell phone (for emergencies).

I'mADork.

I'm not much of a cellytalker either, if I'm going to chat for awhile it will usually be more so on my landline not on my blackberry......more for texting, email, appts and checking fb and mr. LOL I can't remember the last time me and my daughter actually chatted on the phone, it's always bbmessenger or in person.

I have a cheap phone, and I am not ashamed to say it. It is an emergency phone for when my car breaks down. (I drive an hour and fifteen minutes one way to work) I call to say I will be late, to ask a brief question, etc.

I understand how annoying texting addicts can be. I went out with a friend once, we had not seen each other in quite some time, and she kept texting the whole time. She answered any of my questions as if she was doing so absentmindedly, and once answered me wrong! As time went by we drifted apart. She is considerably younger than me and found a "new friend", but had not time for the old friend. The way I look at it, if I wanted to get together to watch her text someone else, and be more into her text than our conversation maybe it was for the best.

She was a new teacher at our school. When we started we went through our Praxis III together, she would eat lunch with me every day, tell me all her gripes, and laugh with me a lot. During the summer she moved closer to the school and started hanging out with a JR High teacher. I understand, they live closer and do more together. No problem. But she speaks to me only in passing now, and only talks to me when she needs something. I realize she is younger, but I am one who can have many friends, not only one or two that I can hang with. Her new friend is the same way. Sad. :(

My point, which regretfully I didn't make clear enough, was not to be "police" about the topic. Only that it started with the teenager in the ad and how some people (like the girl in the ad) can be pretty rude about it, and everyone got a little defensive about their own habits, but the rest of us who do know how to handle it courteously weren't the ones in question and didn't need to be defensive. That was all I meant, nothing more or less.

We all do it, movie theater or not... it's just the age we live in. But if people are polite about it, no problem. There will always be ones who aren't because some people can't let go of their phones for more than a minute and don't give a rat's about those around them, and that goes from movie theaters to everywhere else.

My old boss was the worst... she left that ringer on LOUD and it was a really obnoxious ringtone that was going off in the office, no exaggeration, 15-20 times a day. If you were on the phone and she wasn't there to pick up her phone it would just sit there and ring and ring.  I miss her in the office now, but I do not miss that phone.

Or Stone In Love.  I really need to change that.

But yeah, I agree. My above mentioned former boss ^ - love the lady to death, honestly, but many days I wanted to shut her phone off and hide it. It was always on her desk, so there was no reason not to have the ringer low, or vibrate. It was one of those preset tones, so it was some seriously obnoxious and LONG tone, and 50% of the time she was somewhere else in the building, so the thing would just sit there ringing, and if you were on the phone, you couldn't even hear over her cell going off.

Then there was her text message sound, the one (like on the commercial) that goes "DROOOOOIIIDDDD!!" 6 times an hour at least. Every day.

I had a student that was really bad about being on the phone all the time. I took it away from him and put it in my desk. I told him if he was good I might give it back to him after class. He had it on vibrate, and I have a metal desk. Of course it rang every few seconds and my desk sounded like it had a hornets nest in it. I kept saying, man whoever she is she is persistent! He turned red, and said,"Mrs. Grahn my I please turn it off?" I said, "No, it isn't that bad". Every time it rang the kids laughed and he would turn red. So at the end of the class I told him, now if we don't want this to happen again you will turn it off before class right? He said, "Yes Mam." (Understand this is one student I can joke around with, and he was laughing too by the time class was over. But he did not use the phone in class again!)

We all think differently when we aren't in a particular situation, or don't have the latest cell phone technology...we feel left out, ignored. While others are checking sports scores, texting...what have you. But as soon as one is afforded a new step up in technology, all bets are off - and one becomes just like the rest of the socially inept. It's the way things are now. No different than anything else....be it wireless remote controls, iPods, laptops, or headphones....don't be a user of the same technology that you are bitching about....just saying.

I boycott cellphones that require a ridiculous price in money and have all the bells and whistles. I have never been a fan of a phone, from dial tone........those that know what I am talking about........to blackberry.

I never had a need for it. It is a gadget. It would amaze me how people would act if all the cell phones in the world stop working. How would they live? What would they do?

All things in moderation. And if your phone is your bag, great! Just like anything, keep in mind that your toy should be a joy not a pain in the @#$ to others around you.

I thought it was a woman mentioned rather than a teenager, but yeah I understand everyone else's points. My point was just that stuff that isn't extremely overboard doesn't bother me as much as it apparently bothers others. A lot really is just small potatoes like Rhi said. And it's too scary a world these days to just jump on strangers who are doing something that's maybe slightly discourteous and not something that is overboard discourteous. This whole story wouldn't have been funny at all if that woman had chosen to skip leaving a nasty voice mail and instead came and killed the owners.

We lost power this morning, no internet. Our system is web-based, so that's a problem. But you're right, people freak out. What did we do before all this techie stuff!! Write stuff down?!?!? Oh the huge manatee!

Honestly, I don't like the whole cell phone / text / be on the web all the time thing. The novelty wore off fast. Yes, I do it, sure, not all the time though. I'll play my Angry Birds and Words with Friends when I have a few minutes, or waiting on somebody or soemthing, and I'll "check in" on facebook and stuff... but then it gets put away, especially when i'm with other other people. And I hate texting. For basic simple communication, fine... "running late, be there in 10"... done. My cell has two main purposes 1) in case of emergency and 2) so I don't have to wear a watch.

People are babysat by their gizmos. Can't be away from it for 2 minutes... that's got to be why so many people text and surf in their cars. I just remembered something... a couple months ago at brunch, these people had a whole dvd player setup ON their table at the restaurant for the kid. Four people at the table, and none of them said a word to each other the whole time. Dude what!?

That family will regret the lack of communication later. Not to mention what a zombie the kid will be.

Oh, I just saw this story on the news.........she was warned twice to turn off her phone. She knew in advance. They normally give at least one warning.

was this really on the news? from watching the video, it seemed more like a commercial for the movie theater.

It was a real incident, I guess the reaction on the internet made it news. Not to mention folks are just sick of rude people at the movies. The Alamo is so famous for this they have people like Will Ferrell, and the guy who played Pedro on Napoleon Dynamite and others have done commercials for them about rudeness at the theater.
