MR's DrFu (Linda) was across the pond at the Download Festival this weekend. She posted a pic from MB's set for me on FB (thanks chiclet, you rock! :) ) and said they were excellent, band was having a blast! LOL and that EM's broken arm wasn't slowing him down any.

LOL could be cuz he was a little hyped up on redbulls. Big Cheap Trick fan too..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8-qn3krZjw

MG, your US album doesnt have this bonus one, have a listen. I'm sure you'll like this sexy little number too. And Silvio is right on the money with his comment. LOVE that jam at the end too.

I love it!! Thank you ... yes, Silvio is correct!!

Thank you MG and Deb !!! It's good to chat with you!! It's really a great song!!!

I can't understand why Mr. Big is not huge in America...it's unbelievable!! A lot of bands with 1% of their talent sell/sold millions of CD's...
I'm not a fan as Deb is, but just for information, their largest crowd was here in Brazil, in 1993 or early 1994. It was a show on Santos' beach. Over 100.000 people attended that show. Next month, they will play for a 4500 people in Sao Paulo, but as happened with Journey, the crowd will sing as loud as they can play.

You're just not getting it. They may have more talent than half the stuff out there today, but it doesn't come across that way when they write songs. MB is an example of the parts being better than the sum of those parts. They aren't enough of a cohesive songwriting talent to attract enough fans.....

He's getting it just fine. They attract plenty enough fans everywhere else but the US, so no biggie. The US can enjoy there 4 or 5 arena selling rock bands and all the pop and GaGa they want, leave the rest of the world to enjoy some rock talent. :P They have plenty of good songs, that's where our opinions differ, sure they have some duds but every band does. And I've already stated my opinion that I think it could be better if Martin and Gilbert do more/majority of the songwriting, as 90% of my MB faves are the ones that are for the main part penned by them, the but oh well, I still dig it.

They are something to behold LIVE, that's for sure! But either way.......you can go enjoy some Crazy Lixx and I'll enjoy some Mr. Big. Bahaha.....now there is 2 band names that should never be in the same sentence!

The problem consists like Jon Cain said "The States tend to be more of a “greatest hits” crowd"...I don't live there, but my impression is that many people care much about entertainment...and Mr. Big's sound doesn't fit in that category with those plenty of guitar and bass' solos. Ok, they have not a plenty of hits, but in other hand, Mr. Big went #1 with TBWY in 1991, and that was the one of the last hard rock songs/hard rock bands that went #1 before the Grunge invasion...it helped them to go out of the radar, like many other bands of their era. It was just their second album. Certainly, they were not lucky in that time (pun intended)... :) :)

Good writeups for their performance at Download Festival........ i.e. this one from a Rock Magazine.

"Only catching half the set was enough to persuade us that Mr Big fall into the category of ‘good band’ not ‘nostalgia act’. So much 80s hair metal is able to return on the heritage tip to play whatever couple of hits a band had before re-retiring back into day jobs. But bands like Tesla, Thunder and even Cinderella (who played last year) have proven a cut above the rest. We get all the songs we want and bassist Billy Sheehan and guitarist Paul Gilbert each get their chance to shine within them. We’re even treated to ‘Shy Boy’ which Billy played alongside David Lee Roth while in his band in the 80s (originally by Sheehan’s band Talas: thank you Jonathan Dyton). While Def Leppard failed to muster much excitement, the return of Mr Big to these shores bodes well for their future."

Either way, there will be one happy fan Addicted To That Rush (pun intended  ) at another US show in August....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CR69HafX94

When my brother (a BS/PG fan from back in the day) saw the clip I took he got a kick out of how I knew just when to pan over to PG before his solo half way through. LOL, yeah I've heard the songs a few times. :P

PG plays so easily that sometimes you might believe he's doing a playback..I remember when my brother saw the Live in San Francisco VHS, in '93, he said this when he was watching the intro from Green-Tinted Sixties Mind...

Beg to differ, Dan. Member for member, I'd put any one of MB up, talent wise, against their current Journey counterparts. And for the most part, MB's new album has gotten better reviews than Journey's new album. But hey, no Biggie  differing opinions make the world go 'round. :)

I had no idea Calgary had such a illegal drug abundance? You must be fucking joking? Aside from Valory, who sucks, not one member in MB could play in Journey, not a single one. Come on Deb, love all you want, but please, for the sake of all that is holy, at least be realistic. It's embarrassing to read at times.

I hear Paul Gilbert's an absolute beast on guitar, very well respected outside of his Mr. Big work.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Are you talking about this one? ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=va3PrhB1-NI From '92, great dvd, PG is amazing, so is BS, simply stunning to watch those 2 live. Add EM's pipes and they just rock. :) They are going to be playing the Fillmore in SF again the night after the show I'm going to in So Cal in August, too bad my flights are booked already, that would have been a good one to see 20 years apart. :)

Hey, JMHO Eric smokes Arnel, Billy smokes Ross, and yeah I waffle back and forth between Neal and Paul, Paul isn't just the shredder some think he is, he can also play some pretty sweet stuff......guy's friggin' amazing. Deen and Pat, same thing.

They are playing House of Blues and amphitheatres, same venues Journey was on their own. But either way, I couldn't be happier that they are touring on their own than as part of a package.......ya get longer sets, more new songs, deeper cuts.

One of the things I like about Journey is that they are excellent musicians but unless you already knew it, you wouldn't necessarily gather it from their "radio friendly" stuff. People in the industry know otherwise, though.

Mr. Big went down a storm (as the Brits would put it) at Download. I thought Def Lep sounded better than I have ever heard them, but I did see someone on the Download FB site calling them Dead Leotard ... ouch.

Rock Sugar fared really well too ... big ass sing along start to finish. System of a Down was terrific. Linkin Park was so freakin loud I had to bail out on my kids at the front rail and retreat to the beer tent line. Guess I have crossed the "if it's too loud, you are too old" line with that band. :D

Schon is regarded by many of his peers to be the pre-eminent melodic rock guitarist of all time. Cain is, like him or not, an amazing songwriter and performer.

And Journey's original lineup with Smitty and Perry BLOWS AWAY any incarnation of Mr. Big. However, I think Eric is every bit as good a singer and performer as Pineda (whom I love). Amazing talent - and the epic TMG release with Tak and Blades means Martin will always be way up on my list.

I love MB, but that I agree with. Journey's original lineup blows any band away.

And totally agree on TMG, bummer that Tak didn't want to bring it state side. The CD and Dodge The Bullet tour DVD get lots of play. I just adore Blades and Martin together, great songwriting and stage chemistry, and they're just a helluva lot of fun to watch, LOL they're like little kids. Be it chasing each other around a TMG stage....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5KPqIyj6ZI or sharing a mic at MRFest 1....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akW_7C0uvQs

Would love to see those two work together again in another project. :)

Deb, did you ever post this ...been reading all of Mr. Akins reviews to see how
he fares on the releases that I care about ...!!

Mr. Big - WHAT IF (Frontiers)
Mr. Big
WHAT IF...
Frontiers Records

So many of these “80s reunions” have been above average. Maybe the band’s haven’t always gotten all the members back in place, but they’ve still, for the most part, represented their past very well...at least in the last year or two. Let’s face it, Ratt’s INFESTATION turned up on a lot of Top 10 lists last year, which probably surprised the band as much as any fans. Dokken didn’t hurt themselves any with LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN as they honed their sound to be the best clone of their glory years that they could be in the 21st century. Even bands that didn’t come back at full strength (Extreme and Winger come to mind with their albums) didn’t embarrass themselves by any means. The reason seems simple enough to me. These were all bands that had actual musical substance in the day. These were singers that could sing, and instrumentalists that could really play their instruments. Of all the bands of the 80s, it’s hard to argue that the most talented of all of them was Mr. Big. Eric Martin could wail. Billy Sheehan is one of the most elite bassists on the planet. Paul Gilbert is just a shade under the Satriani’s and Vai’s of the world, and Pat Torpey, while unheralded, has been recognized for his musical genius on drums by one of the best ever - Neil Peart of Rush.

So yes, these guys could really play back then. But what about now? Would their reunion be muddled up with each guy, after 20 years of freedom from a band environment, simply trying to bring their “After-Big” careers into the project? The answer is a resounding “no”. To my many friends that heard about this reunion and asked me for an opinion on WHAT IF... to this point, I’ve had a fairly short and sweet answer to their questions. “It’s standard Mr. Big”. Simple and to the point, WHAT IF...is exactly what you would expect if you stopped paying attention at any point in their career. Take that as a good thing. While most people think that Mr. Big started and ended with LEAN INTO IT, they actually had a nice long run as a band that never lost their signature sound or their direction. In many ways, WHAT IF... fits exactly into that mold. Eric Martin still brings it on each and every song vocally. Billy Sheehan still plays his bass like a guitar. Paul Gilbert still shreds without overplaying, and Pat Torpey keeps things moving on each and every song. As a band, Mr. Big spent as much time being on the verge of a full out jam as they did being singles-oriented, and that doesn’t change here. Listening to Gilbert and Sheehan trade solos in the middle of “Around The World” is very reminiscent of material from their self-titled debut. Eric Martin is still as versatile and strong as ever; be it on powerful numbers like “American Beauty”, or on softer numbers like “Nobody Left To Blame”. Pat Torpey is rock solid as always. The songwriting is solid as well, yet fun to listen to. This is late 80s sounding Rock N’ Roll by a band that did it as good as anyone did during that time. Like I said before, this is standard stuff from Mr. Big. Fortunately for them, they had a pretty high standard.

PITRIFF RATING - 91/100 - I was a big fan of Mr. Big back in the day...big enough to pay full price on several occasions to see them open for a band that I’m not especially fond of, Rush. Being completely honest, I have not really been a big fan of these guys’ solo projects outside of Mr. Big. I’m glad they came back though, and I’m even happier that they came back focused on what Mr. Big was in their day. This could have been a huge letdown, but came out surprisingly solid. A bit heavier than their past efforts, but still excellent. It’s time to get addicted to that rush once again.

While Def Leppard failed to muster much excitement, the return of Mr Big to these shores bodes well for their future." :P

LOL ...I'm green, again!!
How 'bout you, Doc?!?! Feelin' ok?!?! :D

I just can't take it any more. The MB stuff is nauseating to say the least, however, yes, I know I don't have to click on it...but, I wanted to ask Deb a question and I need an answer.

Steve Perry, JSS or Eric Martin. You MUST fuck one, marry one and kill one. Go-

Supposedly ~ 100,000 there; 5 stages; prob 40-50 K at the main stage for the headliners. One of my boys took that pic from back by the beer stands to show the stage and crowd, but I wormed my way up to the front to watch all the bands. Mr Big had big crowd at the second stage for their 5 p.m. set; people knew the words, even to the new stuff. It was excellent.

Go ahead Nat, go for it.

In all honesty, don't think I could answer that one. Granted IMO all 3 have the sexiest pipes on the planet, EM & JSS well, their my soul brothahs. :) And hey, Perry is 61, hell, no way he'd be able to keep up. :P

But if forced at gunpoint.............my answer could be different.

You bring up some very good points, I mean Perry is almost dead anyway, right.....so here goes.

Fuck-JSS (cuz, well...who wouldn't really? and no strings right??)
Marry-SP (He's about to die anyway and probably has a sweet life insurance policy)
Kill-EM (cuz he really has nothin that I want)

So, at the end of the day I'd have a lot of money, a boy toy and no one to answer to! (yeah, I'm no dummy!!)
